I've been doing some looking into the rift mage weakness bug. All the info I find on the net seems to be a couple months old. The rift mage has a lot of appeal to me because of its great control, but the bug pretty much ruins the spec, right?

Bug, schmug. Meanwhile, I'm laughing hysterically at every templar or venatori that falls flat on their ass after a Veil Strike. Or when a mob of darkspawn, even with an Alpha, all do the moonwalk as they get sucked into Pull of the Abyss. There is so much mischief you can do to enemies while they are helpless.

Even if Weakness was totally and completely broken (which it's not, from what I've read), the Rift CC skills would still be awesome.

I'll admit I have read a lot of people say rift is more fun and I like the idea of a pure caster. Plus it will be all that much more fun if they ever actually fix the bug.

What are some good actives to pair with the 3 rift spells + Mark of the Rift?

I know the major hindrance of the rift mage are cooldowns since they have endless mana. Does that make some of the high cost - moderate/low cooldown spells (such as Winter's Grasp) more feasible? Or should half your spells be low cost spammables( like Immolate, Dispel, Chain Lightning and Stonefist) and the other half be the super long cooldowns (such as Static Cage and PotA)?

My Inquisitor is a lvl 22 KE and I typically have Cassandra (Sword + Shield), Sera (Dual Daggers) and Dorian in my party as a 2nd Mage.  I would use Iron Bull more but would have to respec him first to be a Sword + Shield warrior.  I have found that Sword + Shield is much better at generating guard.  On occasion, I use Solas and even Varric (Ranged Rogue).  I used Silverite to craft heavy armor for my Mage Inquisitor, and used the material that grants +3 guard on hit.  Once The Black Emporium and / or the Jaws of Hakkon DLC are released for Xbox 360 (assuming they are), I will continue my playthru.  I plan on crafting some new armor and weapons for my party.  Specifically:  Tier 3 Heavy Mage Armor (Silverite) - will give current armor to 2nd Mage party member, Tier 3 Master Rogue Armor, Tier 3 Master Warrior Armor, Helm and Shield, 2x Staffs (probably Fire, but maybe 1 Ice), 1x Axe or Sword and probably 2x Dual Daggers.  I am currently taking a break from playing DAI...

Stick with KE and run Solas instead of Dorian. Then you can have the best of both worlds.

If you really want to switch to Rift, honestly all you need is the Rift tree and the Spirit tree. You could take just Stonefist for all of your DPS and let the rest be the control spells you like. Don't worry too much about cooldown, by the time your skills are back up, most mobs will be wiped out.

I haven't actually reached the point of specialization yet. I just think ahead....way ahead. LOL

I don't tend to play through RPGs multiple times because I make game decisions like I would real life decisions. And since I tend to be a good guy (with a few exceptions), later play throughs offer little extra besides different romance choices and a different reaction from the world to my character based on its gender/race/class. So I try to make the most of my first play through. I've tried forcing my character to be more evil and it just results in me losing interest in that character or sometimes the game itself.

Anyways, I think I will stick with my original thought when I started this thread. I wanted a specialization that worked best with a fire and ice mage. Rift seems to fit the bill with my love for control spells.

The active spell selection seems to be easier too. Shock statuses seem to make weakened not apply, so I can avoid that tree, which is easy for me because the only spell I wanted from it was Static Cage and PotA is arguably a better CC spell. Inferno has some great spells and Blizzard sounds like a great choice when you have nearly endless mana.

My team selection also seems easier to me.

Dorian's walking bomb spell would seem like a great nuke with PotA. Varric may not be the best rogue choice, but he is the only rogue I really like. And Cassandra will be my tank as well as my male Qunari mage's romance.

If I do make another character, it will be a SnS warrior (either reaver or champion) who romances either Iron Bull. But that is a discussion for another thread. LOL

I take back what I said about Blizzard. Just tried it out and it is lackluster in both appearance and performance.

Edit: Yup....the whole tree sucks except Fade Step and the early passives.

Yeah, I tried Blizzard and had the same reaction. But for what it is worth -- not for your PT, but in general -- Winter's Grasp with the upgrade is awesome for combo/detonator damage. It can also one-shot rage demons. Every tree has something of interest, but that doesn't mean you have to put points into every tree.

I have a hard time justifying the 65 mana cost. Wouldn't Ice Mine be a more cost effective primer? Almost half the cost, capable of freezing multiple enemies (seems like a good combo with PotA), and 100% armor reduction. The only down side is the 3 second delay to its activation.

I thought you were tired of your mage and wanted 2H? :) Just kidding.

Looks great, go forth and conquer.
