So, based solely upon what you consider to be Cassandra's "mannish or un-feminine" appearance in DAI, due to cheekbone structure and short hair, you believe she was originally intended to be a butch lesbian character in DAI.  Interesting.  Perhaps you should watch the following, which (IIRC) takes place approximately 20 years before the events in DAI:

 

 

Call me crazy but perhaps Cassandra simply dresses the part of a Seeker (aka a Warrior), and wearing frilly / revealing or form fitting outfits would be counterproductive to that role (Seeker), as would having long flowing hair which would make it somewhat difficult to wear a helmet for added protection...
