Okay, so first things first, I really wish that this had been available to both sides. This is quite possibly the best side quest in the game, and a huge chunk of people will never experience it.

Second, what are the possible outcomes? Under ideal conditions I'd like the battle with Calpernia to be as difficult as possible. Is it possible to complete this quest, and still fight her at full strength?

Well, I think Champions of the Just is the best quest in the game so I always do the templar path.

That being said, you still go to the shrine on the mage path. It just looks very different. The results of doing this quest are not the same as with Samson. You don't potentially "weaken" her by completing it the way you can weaken Samson's armor. Instead, you can reveal that Corypheus plans to bind her. This gives the option of avoiding the fight altogether or, my preference, say "You know the truth of Corypheus' betrayal. You'll die knowing it." and kill her anyway.

I vastly prefer In Hushed Whispers to Champions, although Champions offers a better boss fight, and then another better boss fight with In Your Heart Shall Burn, but Under Her Skin is the far better choice.

I haven't done What Pride hath Wrought yet on this file, but I can't imagine the boss fight being better than the mage path. Then again, I didn't think the boss fight in In Your Heart would be as awesome as it was on the Templar path either...

It's possible to skip the boss battle with Calpernia altogether if you complete Under Her Skin.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I can't understand it, but it seems the majority take the mage path and think In Hushed Whispers is better. To me it was horribly cliche, a bit absurd, and repetitive with even more fade rifts which I've had my fill of. Cole's introduction is also weaker afterwards while Dorian's is the same regardless of path taken.

I think Champions just neuters Corypheus. In Hushed, you how much the Inquisitor matters: without the Anchor the breach engulfs the world and red lyrium poisons the rest. After you escape from a hellish world where the "Elder One" destroyed the world and the Inquisition, Haven is under siege by a horrid army of red templar abominations: the exact fate you saw in the bad future. It makes In Your Heart Shall burn all the more poignant.

Emprise du Lion is a horrific reminder of what Corypheus would do if he wins and IMO makes more sense when the red templars are at full might. The Venatori are a separate Tevinter group so it makes sense they're still active even if Redcliffe is lost to them.

Not showing Corypheus at maximum potential evilness doesn't equate to "neuters."

In Your Heart Shall Burn is much better on the mage path, as the red templars are much better suited to be a massed army attacking a fortified location, in addition to just being more intimidating in general when on the direct attack (the Venatori's danger comes from their capacity for sneakiness and subversion, not force of arms). Also, Cole's introduction of Corypheus' forces in that mission is way better than Dorian's, as it's more understated (Dorian has too much exposition) and sets the mood better.

As for the mission itself, Champions of the Just is crammed full of filler relating to the villain of the week, who has nothing to do with the red templars themselves, and strikes me as mostly a big waste of time.

I disagree with pretty much everything here.

What's the point in arguing this further? I'm not going to change your mind, nor you I. It's not even meant to be a thread about the mage/templar path.
