Spoilers for Here Lies the Abyss in this thread.
As we have seen, one character must stay behind and distract the Nightmare while the Inquisitor and the other NPC escape the Fade.
Based on what we see, this character gets impaled from behind, though it is difficult to tell.
I suggest that in the expansion the character that was left behind in the Fade be revealed to be alive, only with one very big difference...
He or she is now possessed by the Nightmare!
I think this would make for an interesting twist. This could also play a deeper role since each character can possibly have connections to other people in Thedas.
Hawke would obviously be the most shocking revelation of them all, especially if Varric returns in the expansion and sees his friend possessed by the demon. Rage, blame, pity, sorrow, guilt? Plenty of emotions to play off of. Throw in the Champion's romance option? The Champion's (possible) sibling? The story practically writes itself.
The other three options are easy. All three are warriors. So they can share the same combat attributes as a warrior Hawke.
Alistair would have a possible connection to Morrigan, or even to the Hero of Ferelden. He would have a definite connection to Teagan, Eamon, or Connor. Same with Leliana.
Loghain would have a possible connection to Morrigan. Also, the Hero, depending on choices. Queen Anora, obviously. Ser Cauthrien, possibly.
Stroud. Well... he's probably the least connected of them all. But he would have a possible connection to Bethany or Carver if either of them were taken into the Deep Roads and delivered to Stroud through Anders. If not? Hmm... well, I guess... random Wardens then?
In all three of these cases where a Warden sacrifices himself, Hawke is the one who escapes. Thus, each of these three Wardens has a connection to Hawke at the very least.
Now, best of all, this allows for each character to have a chance at being saved. Like Alistair, for example. So not only would we get to see the character again, we would get to fight them as well. And we would possibly have the chance to save them provided we make the appropriate choices.
Also, the Nightmare could use the character against the player by mentioning personal details. For instance, Nightmare Stroud could tell a Hawke with a Grey Warden sibling that he saved the life of his/her sibling, how can you possibly want to kill Stroud now? Or Nightmare Loghain could be tactical and tell the player to consider what would happen if he or she killed the Queen of Ferelden's father. Think of the international incident it would cause if you murdered him, Ferelden's finest general and Hero of the Fifth Blight. Or Nightmare Alistair, who if facing a female Hero of Ferelden who romanced him could call out to her saying, "I'm still alive my love, don't let it end here like this", as the Nightmare laughs and attacks her.
Also, it would be cool to have the Nightmare manifest itself in the form of weapons fitting whatever character is possessed.
Perhaps expelling the Nightmare from the victim will result in the weapon becoming loot, which can then be used. The weapon could even have the spirit of the Nightmare inside, and using it could have storyline implications.
Also, saving each victim could be different. As was the case with Lost in Dreams from Origins, going into the Fade to fight the Nightmare and free the victim could show a different world for each based on their memories. And the thing that keeps the victim in stasis is the thing they fear most. For Alistair, it could be losing his female Warden to some sickness, so he stays at her side until she gets better. Or if no romance for him, swap with Goldanna. Or some third thing if Goldanna not contacted. For Loghain, it could be defending Denerim from Orlesians and repelling their attacks to keep Anora safe. He can't leave while his country and family are threatened. Stroud? I don't know enough about him to come up with anything. Hawke? Depends on the character and outcome. Maybe an illusion where Hawke believes he or she is in heaven with the entire family gathered around. Who would want to leave paradise?
What does everyone else think of this? Agree? Disagree? Other suggestions or ideas?
