I'm a little nervous about posting this, because I know a lot of people are sick of topics about love interests and mock them, but I would really love it if in the next game we could see a return of the more forward LI.

I know that Anders and Isabela were pretty bold, and that some people complained about that with Anders. I know that the devs have said that they probably wouldn't have an LI make the first move again.

The thing is, I'm pretty shy, and I really like to play characters who are more quiet and introverted too.

I would really really like it if the next had a male LI who would play the aggressor a little. What are your thoughts?

I honestly doubt they would go overboard with it, so why not? Obviously this shouldn't apply to all companions, because that would be as ridiculous as it applying to none... which, like you said, is what happened.

Thank you.  :)

It does seem as though some companions just would be inclined to be more forward than they are, but I know the devs already have a lot of challenges to cope with, so I can't blame them for being cautious about how fans might react.

I just hope that maybe they might reconsider, now that non heterosexual content is increasingly becoming more every day, and there will probably be less outrage around it. Probably. Hopefully.  :)

It would be fine as long as they gave us a clear option to say "no" without being a dick about it. I'd hate having to choose between engaging in a romance I don't want and telling a nice party member to ****** off with their feelings.

I think from a game playing point of view it's better to pursue like Alistair and Leliana than Anders. Or was that just a different level of dialogue? On the other hand It's harder to get into romances than DA2, If you are bad a romances like I am.

I don't think they'll make a LI who makes the first move. People will complain.

In DA:I we had several heart options that sounded more friendly than "flirty". I'd like to have a second, different-colored heart option only for things like this. I don't like to play as a flirty character, so it's a great way to let the other companion know that our PC is interested (but too shy to express his feelings). After that, our companion can make his "first move".

I don't really mind characters making a move on my PC, but again I really like Anders and Isabela.

I agree with other posters that there should be an option to turn them down without being a jerk.

Also what's about a character who will only make a move on you after you are being nice enough to them, without you necessarily flirting with them?

It would help if you stated what your LI experience was. From my own experience and observations of what others have said all of the DAI LIs seem to have a an unique flavor.

I've only done two DAI romances, so I can only speak to those. Cullen requires player initiation, so there's that. However, Dorian can be played either way. You do flirt openly, but there are two paths for initiation; in one the Inquisitor initiates the first kiss, and in the other Dorian initiates the first kiss. The sex scene is also a clear proposition on Dorian's part, and the player has the option of accepting or asking to "slow things down" (but still continue the romance). I think it all works out very nicely.

But if you are asking to be pursued without your having shown any direct interest... I doubt that will happen. The continued use of the heart icons from DA2, as well as the "hit this button to start a romance" options in DAI point heavily to this trend of making sure the player wants this romance. People generally don't like to be "ninjamanced" in these games; either because they feel it takes agency away from their character, they don't want to have to turn down an NPC that they actually like (but have no romantic interest in), or some other reason.

As I've mentioned in other such threads prior: Diversity in the nature of the romance is more important than the diversity in the interest of the romance. There have to be characters that will make the first move if you fit their criteria just as there should be characters who will flirt with you, take a lot of work to romance.

If a character flirts with or propositions you so be it, use the decline option if you aren't interested, but in the name of true variety it should be a feature.

I like what they did with flirt in DA:I it was much better. I romanced Jose and flirt with Cass a lot just to tease. Flit not equal to lets bang? DA2 was just click heart to have romance. In DAI we can even break up. It's more clear Inquisitor is in romance with someone and I still can flirt with other characters.

And to OP yes I like if NPC hit on our character. Zevran was done better than Anders, but only because of dialog wheel 6 responses vs 3 enough said.

After the reaction to Anders, I don't think we'll ever have a character that hits on the PC again any time soon. That said, nobody seemed to complain about Isabela. They could probably get away with having a female character do it again without people freaking out.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking. It wouldn't make sense for a potential LI to make a move if you've done nothing to endear yourself to them. I'm not talking about anything that seems sneaky or "ninjamancing," but just a heartfelt expression of that characters feelings toward the player character. It could happen after you've already developed a strong friendship and rapport with the character.

And it would be good if they're prepared for the possibility of being rejected and don't take offense if they are.

I've played Solas' romance, and I'm currently playing Cullen's. I've enjoyed all of the content so far, but I'd like to see something a little like the situation with Anders again in the future. Not the anger he feels at being rejected, but the way he can express feelings if you're nice to him.

It could also require more than friendliness. Maybe the character doesn't express their feelings until they've gotten to know you, and it can depend on your attitude toward them and/or whether you've shown that you're there for them and support them.

Definitely not a ninjamance situation. It would be clear. Accepting would be a heart option, but turning them down wouldn't have to have a broken heart symbol. It can be totally amicable and straight forward.

Here's a rough draft of how I could see it working with the current system:

That was pretty funny. As to being ninjamanced, DAI flirting tooltips make it pretty clear with the conversation options whether it leads anywhere.

I agree.  I'd actually like the option to have a gay male companion hit on me, then me having the option to kill him because of that or brutally beat him unconscious, this of course would have harsh, harsh penalties in the game and dire consequences. Then have the other companions in my party call me a lunatic and a mad man.

I'd like the option to have women directly hit on me and then me calling them a **** and ******.

I know this is all dark and sinister, but Bioware used to be a dark and sinister company.

I'm not sure that the mere thought of an NPC being the one to flirt is what bothers people though. I've noticed that that, despite Anders and Isabela both flirting with Hawke, it's only Anders that gets complaints. I can't help but suspect that the complaints over Anders' advances were more due to him being a man flirting with male Hawke. I even recall some BSN poster demanding a "gay toggle" be added to the game to keep him from having to deal with such a situation again.

Bioware should make all the male LI's flirt first just to troll the people who got so upset over Anders having the nerve to flirt first.

Few people ever complain about any forward LI other than Anders. It's generally flattering if someone expresses interest, after all.

Anders, however, is a very disliked character, and this is just one more thing to dislike about him. I found the situation extremely creepy. It felt like the equivalent of "Hi! I murder-knifed my previous lover two and a half minutes ago. Now I like you! Interested?" *eyebrow waggle*

Who in his right mind doesn't backpedal the hell out of *that*?  (Other than doing a "maximum trainwreck playthrough", of course)   I half expected the guy to mutter something like "But they only want the map to the deep roads, mommy".

That said, I wouldn't mind more forward LIs at all as long as there is a polite, friendly way to turn them down without being rude.

Well, Blackwall kind of "makes the first move" when you first talk with him after recruiting him in Haven. In fact, it was him showing interest in me that made me go after him  :D He flirts a little with you, or at least it sounded like flirting to me. There's also Zevran, but with him it was more about the physical aspect than the emotional. I agree with you OP, I do hope they make another LI that makes the first move, it would be more realistic and feel so natural...

They don't usually give us an option to play an introvert in Bioware games. So being a shy character is a bit out of character from the type of character Bioware tells us we're playing.

I myself am a shy person as well so the character we are given constantly gives me annoyance. But I wouldn't want this random shy change to an extroverted personality, that would be too drastic and feel awkward. If Bioware wrote two personalities to choose from in character creation this would be a nice addition to have though.

It's true.  After finding some of the Grey Warden artifacts while still in Haven, Blackwall's dialogue is different depending on the Inquisitor's gender.  He'll tell a woman that she's proven herself as honorable and that he has great admiration for her, while with a man he doesn't say that.  This then opens the door to some potential flirting in response.

I definitely wouldn't mind LIs being more forward. The variety was nice, and it felt less artificial.

Anders is sort of his own category in this, because he's so polarising, a dude hitting on male PCs, and your responses are either 'be an ass' or 'flirt back'. Also, it was really sudden. I distinctly remember being like 'I've met you two days ago dude, calm the f down'. It'd be a shame if that stopped the writers from giving us another LI that makes the first move.

I really liked some of the DA:O conversations, like Leliana's compliments on your hair, or Alistair's line about being a gentleman, that while not actually propositioning you, were really obvious openings. Dorian's Mother Giselle convo when you've flirted with him once is sort of similar. I'd really like more of that, at the very least.

So, as long as it doesn't come out of nowhere and there's an option to turn them down gently, I'm all for it.
