Hey guys! I'm here to ruin this nice thread with my wildly inappropriate and random sugges--

Oh. Darn. ninja'd.

ROFLMAO

To stay on topic here: Actually this was brought up at a Romance panel during PAX East and Laidlaw said he'd like to look into a way to make it work: "If the player starts showing romantic tendencies with anyone we may be able to turn it on for other characters." Patrick Weekes also had some interesting thoughts on it. He doesn't like it as he finds it limiting to a certain kind of romance. Skip to 52:23 to listen to it.

I'm absolutely in favor. I love it when LIs are a little on the confident side.

Well, Weekes is in charge now. So, I guess it's not likely? It sounded like he liked the idea but didn't want to try implementing it. A shame in my opinion, because if writers are too scared to try something again and do better, or do something people might not like, it's a sad day for ingenuity and progress.

I'd like to see this again. I enjoyed sometimes having to do the awkward 'Yeah...not interested, sorry" dance with various characters in the past. Obviously, as others have said, it'd be best used if it made sense with the character (bold characters make bold moves, timid ones wait to see what the PC does, etc.)

Honestly, to anyone who freaked out over Anders or Isabela hitting on them....calm down. Feel free to complain about how it was implemented, but if the issue is just 'a guy/girl hit on me!'....shush. If you don't like the character, just tell them so and move on. Don't overdramatize it to the point that the devs take it out entirely >_> there's a decent amount of people that liked that feature and miss it :/

I like this idea as well, although to be fair I like both Anders and Isabela. I do think it would be important to have a 'thank-you, but no thank-you' option.  Both Cassandra and Cullen had very tasteful ways of letting down the Inquisitor.

It's normal to be disappointed when turned down, a small drop in favor wouldn't surprise or upset me, but I'd hope it would only be a small, easily made up amount of approval.

Here's a rough draft of how I could see it working with the current system:

<3: I'm actually interested in you too.                                                       I'm sorry, but I'm not interested in you. I mean no disrespect.

                                                                                 \                                                /

                                                                                   \                                            /

                                                                                     Andraste's-hairy-eyeball

                                                                                                    \  l  /

                          You're interested in me?  - - -                     - ( o ) -                  - - -  It's because of my wit, isn't it?

                                                                                                    /  l  \

                                                                                     Dialogue-wheel-thingy

                                                                                                                               \

                                                                                                                                 \

We have more pressing concerns than this.

There needs to be a choice along the lines of "No way, you pervert. Get out of my castle right now and don't come back."

Why would romantic interest make a character perverted? I don't understand.

Oh, or are you joking? Sorry. Went over my head.   :)

Isabela, that's just her character, and Anders' flirting wasn't huge or anything. You can just choose to ignore him. Sort of like how in real life when someone flirts with me and I'm not interested I just pretend it went over my head.

Anyway, I miss that aspect, to be honest. It's not like Anders was the first companion to make the first move.

  • Alistair: says your beautiful
  • Morrigan: well duh
  • Leliana: says your special or that she feels a connection with you or something
  • Zevran: he's Zevran

I don't think they'll make a LI who makes the first move. People will complain.

In DA:I we had several heart options that sounded more friendly than "flirty". I'd like to have a second, different-colored heart option only for things like this. I don't like to play as a flirty character, so it's a great way to let the other companion know that our PC is interested (but too shy to express his feelings). After that, our companion can make his "first move".

Yeah like when Bull becomes Vashoth. I wanted to pick the option saying that he's the same person since I'd heard the dialogue before and it sounded like something a friend would say, but apparently he interprets that as flirting. :P

I also think it's strange that a lot of the "flirting" lines mostly just sound complementary to me. Apparently one can't be nice in a platonic way!

It is actually less creepy if the companion makes the first move. Otherwise it is the head of an international organisation pressuring his or her subordinates for sex. Doesn't get much creepier than that. It has a bit of a Dominique Strauss-Kahn vibe.

It's true. Sometimes they sound like you're just being nice. But then they can alternate between that and being very forward. Like some of the early flirting with Cullen in Haven, which felt a very forward to me at least.

Which is fine! For people who enjoy playing a character who is very romantically confident. That's just not me so much.

My only problem with Anders was the fact the option to turn him down resulted in my FemHawke practically screeching at him "I DON'T WANT YOU THINKING OF ME THAT WAY" as if he were a sex offender for daring to hit on her, and the resulting p*ssed off reaction from him and the rivalry points. IRL I'm useless at flirting, so I appreciate ladies making the first move. Hence I approve OP's suggestion! :D Isabela showing up at my house was extremely welcome. Er, Hawke's house. I mean Hawke's house! ;)

Once it's carefully done, obviously. Either by making sure it doesn't lead to embarrassing awkwardness a lá poor Anders, or something that looks pushy or forceful. I'm assuming you mean literal first move, OP, as in no flirt options chosen by the player? With a bit of careful writing I don't see why not.

Something I liked in Origins was that if you didn't put the moves on Alistair but he liked you a lot, he would make the first move. You could choose how you wanted it to go.

I always seem to end up in this horrendous situation where I'm pursuing Leliana (aka Total Bae 4 Lyf <3) and after a while she suddenly goes postal at my poor Warden, yelling that I'm in love with Alistair even if he hasn't made the moves. I've done nothing except be nice and give him a few gifts!! =/ I then have to go "end things" and make him a poor sad panda. :(

In some of my playthroughs Leliana totally bugged out and decided she and my warden were in a romance even though the warden was romancing Alistair and I hadn't picked any flirtatious dialogue or even asked her about liking women. Sometimes she did that even when I hadn't talked to her at all before and in our first conversation she'd be like "you're cheating on me!" She is a very jealous and possessive woman apparently!

Serves her right for all the times she's ninjaromanced me after I told her thank you for liking my hair. That's all I did and then I Alistair or Zevran are all mad at me and thinking that I'm two timing them. So I hide from Leliana now and run when I see her looking at me.

After the reaction to Anders, I don't think we'll ever have a character that hits on the PC again any time soon. That said, nobody seemed to complain about Isabela. They could probably get away with having a female character do it again without people freaking out.

I didn't complain about Isabela herself, but I DID complain about how the game forced my Hawke to smile and arch an eyebrow as if interested (without my input). That's what I can't stand. Don't force my PC to wink or smile or whatever if I decide my PC is not attracted to the flirting NPC. DA:I was good in this regard. Having the option for gentle let downs is also good.

I will forever hold up Alistair as my perfect model for flirting in a BioWare game I guess. He makes a flirty joke and you can act like he didn't say anything or run with it. I'd love to see more like that. The NPC is testing the waters with you without either of you being extremely forward.

I do have nostalgia for some of BioWare's old terribly insensitive break up lines from Baldur's Gate II and Neverwinter Nights: HoTU though. I had many good laughs reading them.

*LI propositions you* PC: "I can't get over those lumps of scar tissue on your back... I'm not in the mood."

NPC: "I've waited in hell for your love a thousand years, and the first thing you say is you want me to take a bath because I stink?"

PC: "That's it, this relationship is OVER!"

I would prefer the LIs not make the first move.

I prefer that to the flirts we have in previous games.

I agree. Basically all BioWare games tend to put you in control of an extraordinary character destined to shape the world and do great things. That people would be fascinated by and drawn to such characters seems a given.

Another interesting possibility would be to have a third companion play a bit of match-maker and sort of nudge the PC and a potential LI towards a relationship if certain conditions are met. Then we'd be given the option to either blow it off as a silly teasing, respond in a coy-but-actually-kinda-interested manner, or confidently affirm our interests.

Problem is, which advances from which interests? I like Solas, "Hey, Solas!", and I don't mind if he kisses me first or leaves flowers under my door or maybe even storms my bedroom at night. (okay, okay, Lavellan's bedroom). But what if Blackwall is going to start getting agressive? Iron Bull? Dorian? I'd be highly uncomfortable, because I have no romantic interest in those guys whatsoever, and after that, our friendship (imaginary friendship, granted) would be screwed.

So maybe, just maybe, "no advances at all" is a good middle ground, because it gives you some measure of control in your head. I don't know - if all romance interests suddenly started jumping at my PC, it would be fun for the first twenty minutes, but upon replaying, I'd be breaking their hearts and finding myself in awkward situations, and I don't like that.

I feel this can often be averted with good writing, like giving you the option to let people down easy and early without there being a big confrontation or official declaration of love. Like in RL, you can flirt with someone and then find out they're already seeing someone else or are otherwise unavailable, so you move on. It doesn't have to be a massive heartbreak or the end of the world.
