I also think it's strange that a lot of the "flirting" lines mostly just sound complementary to me. Apparently one can't be nice in a platonic way!

That's true in real life as well. You're nice or consoling to someone and all of a sudden he thinks you're flirting with him. If me being friendly and nice =flirting then I "flirt" with women, old people, children, and I really "flirt" with cute babies, dogs or cats.

if all romance interests suddenly started jumping at my PC, it would be fun for the first twenty minutes, but upon replaying, I'd be breaking their hearts and finding myself in awkward situations, and I don't like that.

Well, I'm personal imagining this as something that isn't very dramatic.

In Mass Effect, most LI's seem to take being rejected in stride. That's more what I'm hoping for.

I would prefer the LIs not make the first move.

I prefer that to the flirts we have in previous games.

Do you feel like elaborating? No pressure, just curious.  :)

I'm not talking about what people take from you, I'm talking about what you say to them. Because in DA:I, a lot of platonic, complimentary lines are specifically used for flirting. Meaning the Inquisitor is trying to flirt. There's no need to insult my intelligence by suggesting I think being nice = flirting, seriously.

1. It would have to depend on who it is. For instance, someone like Cullen would not, but someone like Bull would. I think that would also be the most realistic approach. Additionally, it would be nice if they only did so if they mostly approved of your actions and opinions.

2. I didn't take many of them, so I'm not sure what they were like. The issue to me wasn't the fact that the flirting is complimentary, it's just that I'd like to be able to say those lines without actually flirting. So that puts it in a weird place. Example: I'd like to tell Bull he's the same person after his mission without flirting, etc.

I do agree with the OP here.
I am quite shy and really don't like flirting in real life, but I am a bit of a hopeless romantic nonetheless. Unfortunately, this is one aspect of my personality which is also present when I game, despite my attempts to roleplay.
In DAO I must have accidentally encouraged Alistair, but I believed he was making the first move when he offered me the rose. In DA2 I liked that Anders and Isabela showed an interest from the outset. In DAI, everything was down to the PC which, while okay with me, wasn't really my preference.
So while I certainly don't want all the LIs to try and initiate a romance, I think that if the PC is making the right choices and treating the LI well, and if it suits the LI's character, having them show an interest first could add to the romance variety.
Obviously not everyone likes this approach, and some people would be vehemently against it, so I could understand if Bioware decided not to implement it again.

Edit: Funny story, just to illustrate my point:
The first time I played DA2, I took a liking to Fenris and wanted to romance him - but I never picked any of the flirt options, because I didn't want to make the first move! So, come endgame, I actually had no LI at all. I had to restart and made sure to hit a couple of flirt options. :P

It would be fine as long as they gave us a clear option to say "no" without being a dick about it. I'd hate having to choose between engaging in a romance I don't want and telling a nice party member to ****** off with their feelings.

This. I don't particularly care either way if a character hits on my PC, but if I decide to turn them down, I just want the option to not be an ass about it.

I think that's a completely fair stipulation. When I wasn't romancing Anders, I fretted over that moment in the story because I knew he was going to get upset no matter how I approached it.  :)

Just to be completely clear, I'm definitely not asking for a revisit of that. lol.

That's a really good example. There are more "flirtatious" moments that are really just being nice than I realized.

It reminds me of when I was trying not to romance Alistair one play through in DAO, which was harder than it should have been for me lol, and we got to the part where we found Duncan's shield and I gave it to him as a gift...way late into the game. He thanked me, and without thinking I said something like "for you, anything." He was grateful and I was happy. Then we went and completed another side quest, and then the next time in camp I visited him to say hi and he was trying to give me the rose.

I was so sad that I had to turn him down, so I went back and reloaded before giving him the shield just to not build his hopes up in the first place. Because I'm silly like that.

Add me to the shy camp. I think it's fair to say a lot of gamers are "shy", for lack of a better term. Either way, I think having characters potentially make the first move will help those players out, or people who are role-playing a more introverted character. Personally, I like complimentary flirting lines because I tend not to flirt much in the traditional (suggestive) sense, but more by complimenting someone. For me, it would be pretty cool if you could compliment someone in a flirty way or a platonic way, with slightly different dialogue and inflection/tone. To use my example above, that way I could tell Bull he's the same person normally, or flirt if I so chose. Additionally, perhaps have the more suggestive flirting lines open only after starting a romance with someone.

Those suggestions are quite specific to me however, so I don't really expect them to be implemented.

Thanks! There are more too. Quite a few more. It probably wasn't harder than it should have been; Alistair is the best! :P

Oh man, I agree.

Every time a flirt option pops up I have to build myself up and even then I end up face planting into the nearest wall when my character says something so obvious and cheesy . They might as-well held up a sign saying "DO YOU LIKE ME?" and then slipped the LI a note with the options; "o Yes o No." Although, that might have actually been better since it gives them the chance to decline. I feel like I'm forcing myself onto these poor souls who have no escape from my blatant flirtations right from the get-go.

Agreed, I want someone who has crush on PC. Someone who flirts with PC before PC flirts to them. Someone who confesses to PC.

So long as I can turn them down without being a jerk about it, I like the idea that some LIs flirt with you and others you have to flirt with gives it a little more variety and I'd be all for that. Though the timing could be slightly better than what they did with Anders getting hit on by someone right after they mercy killed their lover was really weird.

Which part?

If the first part, I just get uncomfortable with that kind of stuff.

If the second, I like how in DAI it went more from friend to lover rather than "We'll bang,ok?" when it came to the flirt options. DAI still has some of those, but it isn't all they have.

I agree it would make more sense for some characters, especially the promiscuous ones, to make the first move. I was just stating my preference.

It would be nice if they had a distinction for those options.

That makes sense, I guess. What I'm confused about a little bit, is that I think this has something to do with what you're asking in your Demisexuality thread.

The biggest reason I would like this is because I'm introverted and I like to play characters who are too, but it's also because I don't really get the physical aspect of romantic relationships, at least not at first. I'm much more interested in the emotional, and my vision of this has more of a emotional focus for the characters than a physical. I guess I'm surprised, because you would like a Demisexual romance, that you wouldn't like this?

Actually it would be cool if a love interest or two, in future games, actively pursues the player. Usually its the player doing all the "work" and things like that.

Nothing in particular, just general concept. Because I feel like I'm asking partially for the same thing, to be able to play someone like me.  :)

Edit: By which I mean that I think that this would absolutely qualify as a romance where the player character could be Demisexual.

Alright. Yes, in my ideal scenario, there would be a clear distinction. Let me copy paste my other one so show you how I imagine it.

<3: You're still the same person.                                                       I'm sorry, but I'm not interested in you. I mean no disrespect.

                                                                                 \                                                /

                                                                                   \                                            /

                                                                                     Andraste's-hairy-eyeball

                                                                                                    \  l  /

                          You're interested in me?  - - -                     - ( o ) -                  - - -  It's because of my wit, isn't it?

                                                                                                    /  l  \

                                                                                     Dialogue-wheel-thingy

                                                                                   /                                           \

                                                                                 /                                               \

You're still the same person.                                                      We have more pressing concerns than this.

The second option would not have a heart obviously, and while it could share the generic arrow most options have, I think it would benefit from a return of the DA2 style charm icon. You're basically saying they are a true friend.

Edit: Changed the stupid-in-hindsight example :P

Yeah. I'd also like it if there were pushy characters who would continue to chase you even if you initially said no. How often do we get something along those lines as a player? With our love interest initially reluctant, but we're able to seduce them over time? Well, let the NPCs do the same. And it's realistic. there are plenty of people like that out in the world (and many of them have ended up succeding....)
