First of all I want to say FU BIOWARE for making me a space person now!

ok now that's out of the way please suggest the best SPACE RTS GAMES! I want to command space fleets.

Please take note that I already considered starcraft II but my mood has changed I also considered getting into EVE ONLINE but I just found out about the subscription thingy that put me off I thought it was one time activation... I WANT BIG GALACTIC FORCES Destroying planets and or FLEETS with less bugs

games so far that caught my attention are:

Homeworld remastered edition

Sins of a solar empire

Distant Worlds: Universe

ok after some research the Homeworld had some negative reviews people claiming that formation is not working

Sins of a solar empire caught my attention waiting for it to go on sale but the alignments of planets is kinda... unreal lol but people told me it is modable @_@

Distant Worlds: it looks promising but the price tag is like buying the milky way galaxy. Thanks in advanced

I would probably go with Starcraft in my opinion.

Sins of Solar Empire is also pretty good.

Starcraft II is fun.. but it is designed to be a 300 apm spectator sport so it isn't as 'welcoming' as some less micro intensive RTSs.

Sins is cool, but a game can easily take hours, and recovering from a decisive defeat is hard as hell if your enemy actually presses their advantage

Homeworld is supposedly great, but I never really tried it myself

There's that one guy who had a game of Civ 2 that lasted over 10 years.

In fact, I'm not even entirely certain if he ever managed to finish it.

He was in a nuclear deadlock with like 3 other civs. It was interesting.

He did finish it after a couple more millenia.

Starcraft 2 is the best of the bunch, if you want to get competitive, or if you want the best RTS campaign in recent years, the story is cheesy but thats how it goes with Blizzard, or you can play at the arcade with the vast amounts of mods and custom maps.

C&C 3 with the expansion is also a good one. Also, Supreme Commander Forged Alliance and Total Innihilation.

If you don't mind going back a few years there was the Star Trek: Armada series which was a decent RTS using the Star Trek IP.

Well, I'm following a game called The Mandate that's coming out late this year or early next year.

Actually after reading this I would like to change my answer to Red Alert 2.

I really shouldn't have forgotten about that game.

Red Alert 2 is legendary, loved it to death, but I don't think it is qualified as a space RTS...

where is the SPACE RTS in Starcraft 2 and red alert?

Unfortunately the three you listed in OP make up about half of the 3d RTS games ever made, which is a shame... Ancient space is kind of like homeworld... I saw it on youtube and didn't think it was a good game though. The games Freespace and Freespace 2 actually put you in the pilot seat of various one man space craft to fight an alien invasion, so you aren't going to be gathering resources or building things, but what you can do is command the various ships in your fleet to do things.

The Mandate is looking pretty awesome, I am definitely going to be picking that up on release day.

One Space based 4X strategy game that I really liked; but couldn't play to save my life  :P would have to be the Sword of the Stars series.
