The Mandate is looking pretty awesome, I am definitely going to be picking that up on release day.

One Space based 4X strategy game that I really liked; but couldn't play to save my life  :P would have to be the Sword of the Stars series.

Alot of steam players told me to stay away from Sword of the Stars because of countless bugs and being an abandonware

Starcraft II is fun.. but it is designed to be a 300 apm spectator sport so it isn't as 'welcoming' as some less micro intensive RTSs.

Sins is cool, but a game can easily take hours, and recovering from a decisive defeat is hard as hell if your enemy actually presses their advantage

Homeworld is supposedly great, but I never really tried it myself

The multiplayer was designed for that but the single player campaign is a ton of fun and can be completed by anyone.

You can't beat Blizzard quality. Even the Original game and it's sequel hold up today, almost 20 years later and is still being played competitively around the world.

Civilization V Mass Effect Mods ( :P)

Supreme Commander

Endless Legend. I could never really get into this game, too much going on with other games and real life, but the potential is obvious to anyone with even the slightest sliver of a like for 4X games. Not really a space RTS either, but hey :P

Also,

Offworld Trading Company. Seriousy, give it a try. It's one of those games where, because of the basic design, you pretty much can not beat the AI. They had to purposely dumb down the AI to give you a chance.

There was also a fleet combat game I played a long time ago that I loved. Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. Very fun, loved being able to target specific devices on enemy ships. there was a sequel in the works that got canceled.

Starcraft 2 is the best of the bunch, if you want to get competitive, or if you want the best RTS campaign in recent years, the story is cheesy but thats how it goes with Blizzard, or you can play at the arcade with the vast amounts of mods and custom maps.

C&C 3 with the expansion is also a good one. Also, Supreme Commander Forged Alliance and Total Innihilation.

While not a spehz-RTS, if you do pick C&C3 up, be sure to check this out:

Runs with the base-game, and renders the official expac somewhat obsolete, to be had. Besides, Tiberian Sun-era units in 3D. ^_^

Original Star Wolves was a nice, little game I played back in the day. Far smaller in scope than the mentioned Homeworld, but it wasn't bad for what it was (there are sequels, which were rather meh though).

Hegemonia, with its expansion: it's a classic "ol' but gold".

Another, could be Star Wars -- Empire at War.

Looks pretty cool. I would love to get competent at that game; I mostly just flounder around for the first couple of turns before becoming overwhelmed by the sheer depth of customization that everything has.

I really like the lore of the setting though, that's what drew me to the game in the first place.

Homeworld: Remastered really needs to get some official developer or some mod attention into recreating Homeworld: Cataclysm. I know that the original source code was lost, but a concentrated effort to bring The Beast into HD-Textures and Steam based multiplayer needs to happen.

If you're into Warhammer 40k, there's a space battle RTS in development for it.

Battlefleet Gothic or something like that.

I can't wait to play the Remastered Mass Effect mod, hopefully it will be comparable with the steam MP when it comes out.

Star Wars: Empire at War is fairly solid in the space combat department. Sorely lacking on the ground combat (sending a single hero is enough to win most missions).

Dawn of War series is also fairly good, although it can be argued it isn't really feel sci-fi and more fantasy with guns.

Sins of the Solar Empire: Rebellion is a decent game. It's scale is fairly huge and it is fun to watch the fleets slam into each other. Combat is rather limited, but it functions.

The only game I can't really fully recommend is Grey Goo. I haven't played it and the lack of infantry in a RTS is a bit of put off for me. But I heard it's still a really good game regardless. Give it a try.

If you are looking for an RTS that captures the awe of Reaper Destroyers landing on a planet get Universe at War: Earth Assault and play as the Hierarchy.
