As per title, I would like to discuss with you the large and growing diffusion of alcohol consumption in the Dragon Age series.
- In DA Origins, we had Oghren: he sought relief in the bottom of a mug, his life marked by failure and abandonment (Brank left him because she had a lesbian relationship, IIRC).
- In DA 2 the number of characters who assumed alcoholic beverages increased, even after the end of the Blight (which I presume was the first cause of the growth of business for bartenders and taverns in 9:30): 1) Isabela: she is always hanging out at "The Hanged Man", selling her body because she lost everything after the shipwreck that killed her crew. Probably all of this was caused by her abusive husband. 2) Fenris: the first thing he does when he moves in the slaver estate is drinking the wine his former master forgot there, even smashing some bottles on the wall while he was drunk (risking to hurt his friend Hawke). 3) Varric: another victim of the dwarven caste system. He feels that he belongs to the Stone, but he is forced to stay on the surface and so he just drowns his problems in a bottle. 4) Hawke: even the main character is an alcohol addicted. Surrounded by blood mages and corrupted templars, abandoned by his/her siblings (Carver/Bethany can both die while Leandra becomes Frankenstein's monster 2.0), he/she spends most of his/her time drinking beer at "The Blooming Rose", always ending up in bed with one of the male/female prostitutes working there (increasing his/her chances of getting an STD).
- In DA Inquisition basically everyone is a drunken slacker: except for Cassandra, Solas, Vivienne and Leliana, every single companion or advisor wastes his/her time drinking wines and spirits and gambling during several games of Wicked Grace. Iron Bull fantasizes about sex with high dragons, Sera can't cut her hairs in a fashionable way, and these are only a few examples of what alcohol is causing all over Thedas.
What are your opinions? Do you think the writing team has gone too far with this obsession for drinking?
Let the discussion begin!
