There is a difference between social drinking & self-destructive drinking. Oghren was self-destructive, Fenris was (somewhat) self-destructive. The others? Social.

It doesn't have to be social to not be self-destructive.

^This. Sometimes you just drink to get a little pleasure. Even if you are alone.

Given the number of 9/10 and 10/10 reviews this game got, it would seem all the reviewers were also drinking.

What are your opinions? Do you think the writing team has gone too far with this obsession for drinking?

Let the discussion begin!

At times and places of poor public sanitation (such as a medieval-ish setting), the consumption of alcoholic drinks was a way of avoiding water-borne diseases such as cholera, giardia, cryptosporidium, etc.  Beer and wine, in particular, were used for this purpose. Alcohol kills bacteria, and its low concentration in these beverages would have had only a limited intoxicating effect. More important was that the boiling of water and the growth of yeast required for brewing would kill dangerous microorganisms. Furthermore, the alcohol content of these beverages allowed them to be stored for months or years in simple wood or clay containers without spoiling.  If the companions you mentioned aren’t drinking alcohol-laden fluids, they are realistically likely crapping themselves closer to dehydration and death each day due to bad water.

In addition to issues of sanitation, alcohol was often used for medicinal purposes in the absence of any other effective treatment.  Even when herbal treatments were used, alcohol was often a component in extracts and tinctures.  You only need consider your modern life and replace pharmacological elements unavailable during pre-gunpowder era to realize how essential alcohol was for living.  Ever taken ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin?  Imagine living in a world where you don’t have these things, and the suitable replacement for the treatment of pain is willow bark and strong beer.  PTSD amongst people traumatized by war would be treated with alcohol.  Need to treat a minor infection or need a necessary disinfectant?  That’s right, alcohol the best and most likely available candidate (perhaps running neck in neck with vinegar).

TLDR:  Alcohol = Sanitation and Medication appropriate to the game setting.

In medieval times alcohol was very popular cause there wasn't many ways to store liquids without them getting bad. Alcohol was one way and taverns were popular so it fits to theme.

And the water purification wasn't implemented yet (at least not on large scale). May I offer you a shot of vodka with your breakfast cereal?

My Hawke spent like five seconds at the blooming rose. A lot of what you're listing is head canon-ized embellishments. There are so many different ways to look at those scenarios.

For example, you only ever see Fenris get drunk once. Other than that, he makes no reference to it. Thus, you're the one filling in the blanks. He may have only had that one bender and that was it. Players' perspectives and all that.

This is an M rated game, so what's the problem? Adults drink. And this is coming from an adult (me) who hates alcohol and has never touched it.

Edit: This may all be cereal. Mushy cereal.

LOL Mass effect alcohol moments happened a lot...passing out in bars, getting roofied etc...I think its just endemic in this generation of story writers. I do not drink, I am 47 years old, if there is a quest, yes I will drink in the game(like the whole Sanguine quest in Skyrim that starts with the drink in the bar).Otherwise I do not drink in my games.   As long as there is a choice, I have no issue with it.
