While fighting any dragon or quest miniboss my entire party dies and I end up using active guard for a 30 minute hack and slash battle.  I've upgraded the weapons and armor of my entire party, and they still die so fast.  I thought you were supposed to utilize your party in tac cam to win these fights? Tac cam gets my whole party wiped out.  Anyone maybe have any youtube videos of these battles using tactics?  Or any tips or suggestions?

Make sure you aren't using any armor or weapons with berserk on them because berserk will kill the one who is using it. There are folks who know how to make use of berserk but that probably doesn't count for most of us (and certainly not me).  :P

Playing on nighmare I'd have to say tac-cam is useless. Never used it. Pause/unpause is needed from time to time though.

The question is, do you have enough CC, and are you using dispel?

Set warrior payback strike and shield bash to preferred in tactics. Charging bull also a recommended skill.
Get firewall, static cage and/or wintergrasp on your mage/mages.
Early game get knockout powder on rogues, respec out of it later.

Always have minimum one dispel in your group. Either from cassandra templar spec or a mage.

Not sure how far you are in the game but take your time and switch zones if you have to. Dont fight mobs 2-4 levels above you.
Learn to love regeneration potions and resistance potions, also bee grenades are good.

Edit: Also set your tank to following him/herself. And set mana/stamina to 0%. If companions stop using spells at 20-50% mana, then that is a huge dps/survival loss. Always have them use all their abilities constantly without pause.

For general tips on skills, creating a balanced party and, in general, avoiding death, read this thread:

http://forum.bioware...eep-them-alive/

Quick tips: start by setting "barrier" to favorite (maybe bring 2 mages if you are not one yourself) and set ranged characters (mages with no spirit blade and archers) to follow themselves, so they stay away from melee range and don't die so fast.

About killing dragons, just bring Cole and Sera and follow this strategy (make sure you upgrade your focus skills with Cullen's perks):

Dragons like to telegraph a lot of their attacks, but the AI doesn't do so hot at avoiding them.  Helps to have whatever elemental resistance on the team potentially.

Also, it is hardest to keep everyone alive in early game somewhat regardless of difficulty.  For some fights it is sometimes useful to use tac cam just so you can set your ranged characters to hold a spot away from the enemy so they don't hit by strong melee attacks.  I don't use tac cam in realtime whatsoever, usually just to possibly queue a single order for every character.  I just can't get it to work like DAO where you could easily manage the battle with a sky eye view.

One other thing that is somewhat helpful, is to give your rogues Stealth and perhaps Evade, and mages Fade Step and set that to Preferred so they will attempt to dodge or break LOS without your intervention.  Of course sometimes this leads to issues, like Solus might fall between rocks and become useless for the rest of the fight, but on the whole it seems to help a bit.

I use Pause more than I use Attack (lol), so I agree with that. But I disagree that Tactical view is useless. Some boss battles are much easier if you position everyone correctly with Tactical. Like when a dragon goes into hurricane mode, or at the very beginning of the Envy Demon battle.

Also in Here Lies the Abyss, if you're doing it with a lower-DPS/story-driven party. Wasn't necessary my second (rogue) playthrough, but my first playthrough was a mage romancing Dorian, so I needed those pillars to survive the Aspect of Nightmare fight.

I really do love the better Hold they added to the tac cam, it's much more customizable than the Everyone Hold/Everyone Move Freely of the previous game.
