There's no reason more rpg elements couldn't have been included in the game, they simply "chose" to make it more accessible to a larger player base. I don't mind the combat system, but it's clear that the game as a whole was dumbed down. The only real reason for this of course is the whole $$$$$ thing....it's not worth it to large corporations like EA to make "rpg's" that are only going to appeal to a certain percentage of the gamer population. It simply won't sell enough.
So, how does this apply to EA publishing Dragon Age?

If you hate skill based shooting so much, go Engineer. Problem solved. But don't try to act like you aren't playing a role simply because they made the shooting more skill-based.ZilaSkye wrote...
Unbelievable ... BW ... you actually listened the whining FPS crowd ... and totally gutted the RPG from ME2... lay off the drugs for ME3 pls ... kkthx
Seriously ... love the story etc ... and the combat was "perfect" in ME1 in terms of havin a tad of FPS without making us RPG folks "seasick" with FPS mechanics ... totally ticks me off that the FPS crowd is ruining the RPG genre like this. Do you not yet realize that the majority of players the "love" a game ... don't post! just the whiners that have fracked up dozens of dev team design doc's over the years..as they know "Nada"! about what is fun and what isn'!!
GRRRRRR!
Enjoy!

And what's the issue with games being open to more types of players? Seems to me the better the sales, the more likely a publisher is to continue funnelling money into a studio who in turn will continue to turn out games.
*shrugs* The mechnics are light in terms of traditional RPG elements but at the same time this gives the story and your interactions with the world more meaning. It's an evolution of the traditional RPG mechanic.
Heck, I used to play a lot of Pen and Paper stuff, Rifts, Shadowrun and D&D mostly where the mathematics of a situation sometimes took over from a story. When I was introduced to World of Darkness and its more simplistic character creation and dice elements I loved that by taking some of the more complex dice rolls out of the game that the story become the driving force.
Same thing here. Not everybody is going to like it but I think what we're seeing in ME 2 was the way the game was always evisioned.
