The last Eternity thread on these here boards died in January and and there's been little discussion of it since. This seems odd given that this is a forum of RPG lovers. Seeing as it comes out this week now seems like a good time to restart the discussion
.

Trailer

What Is It?

It's an isometric 2D fantasy RPG that takes inspiration from the Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment). For the more recent Bioware converts it's a bit like playing Dragon Age: Origins from the tactical perspective with a fixed camera (that allows for zoom). Like most of those RPGs it involves lots of exploration, questing and companion interaction.

Combat is in real time and, as in many similar RPGs, you can pause the game at any time to issue commands to your party. The game features a party of six which can consist of either premade companions with their own personalities, your own custom built characters or a mixture of the two.

The game features 11 classes. These run the gamut of traditional, DnD inspired staples like wizards, fighters and rogues to those with more unusual mechanics like ciphers (psychics who power their abilities through physical attacks) and chanters (a brilliant, very unusual take on bards). It also has five playable races which, again, include familiar races like humans, elves and dwarves as well as more unusual ones like Orlans (diminutive, furry cat-like people) and Aumua (large, semi aquatic people).

There is both a robust reputation and disposition system to promote role-playing. Reputations are how particular factions feel about your character. If a faction likes you they may be more inclined to work with you, if they don't they may oppose you. Dispositions affect how your character is perceived in a general sense. Depending on how you converse with people you can be seen as rational, honest, deceptive, clever, stoic, aggressive, passionate, cruel and/or benevolent.

Who's Making It?

Obsidian Entertainment: the makers of Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout: New Vegas and Neverwinter Nights 2. The team includes Josh Sawyer (lead designer of New Vegas and Icewind Dale 2), Tim Cain (the guy who made Fallout and Temple of Elemental Evil) and Eric Fenstermaker (the guy who designed Vault 11 in New Vegas). It also has contributions from Chris Avellone (Planescape: Torment, KOTOR 2) and George Ziets (Mask of the Betrayer).

What's the Setting Like?

It's set in The Dyrwood, a land that has recently thrown off the yoke of colonial oppression. Relations between settlers from the former foreign rulers (the Aedyren empire) and the local Glanfathan tribes are uneasy. In addition some people are beginning to experiment with animancy, a magical science that involves the manipulation of people's souls. Not everyone is convinced this is a good idea. The technological level of the world is equivalent to the late middle ages, as such it includes simple firearms as well as the kinds of arms and armour you might expect to find in a fantasy RPG (everything from swords to crossbows to warhammers).

Played the beta (I hope for more hairstyles) but by the gods it seems like obsidian are going all out with reactivity. I am excited now

Anthony Davis, who works at Obsidian (but didn't work on this game), is currently streaming the game: http://www.twitch.tv/theroguezombie. It will contain spoilers of course!

@MOV: I'm a beta backer too and I really like how the game is shaping up. I think there are enough hairstyles (about 20 for most races!) but more customisation is always nice.

Really excited, trying to decide which class to roll for the first playthrough. The chanter looks different from just about anything I've seen in an RPG. I mean yes, they're basically a bard, but the way they sing and cast seems really unique. Also how the monk depends on taking damage to be even able to use their abilities.

I have done my best to avoid any and all information of this game since the Beta came out, but I have the Digital Deluxe Edition from Kickstarter, so juggling this and Darkest Dungeon will be fun. IIRC, the Hall of Heroes stretch goal allows fully player created parties from the onset. Might have to make a Let's Play out of it. ;)

Not from the outset but from about the point where you start picking up companions.

I hope that this game will succeed so that EA will point at this and say to Bioware "See this? now do it!"

I've been watching the stream and it looks like fun.

I got the game pre ordered.

I played BG1 and BG2 recently (I didn't finish BG2 , after the Underdark and the awful mindflayers I was done.) I kinda like those games.Well sort of.

From what I saw in POE , I'm probably going to enjoy this game more.

I'm so excited only game I have ever Kick-started as I have enjoyed every game I've played by Obsidian Entertainment. All the content I've seen has excited me about the game.

I hope it reviews well and sells well so Obsidian can keep going with this IP and any new IP they want to work on.

Oooooh, that's right -- Guess it'll be an early birthday present, so to speak, as it releases one day before it. Looking forward to getting that backed copy of mine. :D

Ditto on this - I've workd hard to stick my head as firmly in the sand as possible on this game for the past two years until I get my Steam code here in a few days. Excited, but woefully ignorant.

Backed this from the get-go.  Having a terrible time trying to decide what class to play first

Three more days. Ahhhhhhhhhh.

Much like most of you, I've avoided reading up on just about anything about the game so I go into it blind. I even stopped reading the KS updates just so I can find out everything as I go through it. I am so ready for this.

I've been super excited for this since they announced the kickstarter! Already pre-ordered but I'll prolly wait till summer to play it, since that's typically the slow season for games. Got plenty to occupy my time atm and Bloodborne hits tomorrow!

I can't wait to be a Druid who wears Full plate armor and fights everything with a Blunderbuss and loves everything Mechanical.

Should you ever revisit BG2 make sure someone (in my case Edwin) can cast this before the Underdark

Mordenkainen's Sword
The fighting summon. It 100% resistance to all damage (slashing, fire, etcetera) except for pure magic damage, is immune to mind affecting spells, has THAC0 10. It has only 36 hit points and can easily be killed with two castings of Magic Missiles.

Creature: SWORD01 (Magical Sword, 10 HD).

Everyone should check out the previews of the upcoming Poe/Obsidian documentary:

They basically reveal that if the kickstarter hadn't been successful there might not be Obsidian today. :crying:

I do wonder to what extent it was Pillars that saved the company and to what extent it was their new Tank MMO and their assistance on that Russian MMORPG. Regardless it's great to have them around and it's nice that they've now got a bunch of stuff underway (Pathfinder games and an unannounced AAA project).

It just goes to show - there's not much money to be made making good games. Which sucks.

Not sure that's the problem .

The guy was all giddy about having their own IP ...

I don't know much about Obsidian but they should have done this sooner.

If Pillars sells well , they can create a couple of games and have a more or less steady flow of cash during a couple of years.

From what I've gathered they were working on a project , it didn't work out , and everything went bad.

Same I've been doing this as well, ever since I had everything confirmed on my account from the kickstarter backing I've had my head in the sand, I can't wait for that Steam Code, been doing the same for Torment : Tides of Numenera as well

All the real money is made making mediocre games.

See Inquisition.
