I've been off this forum for a while. It kinda really bugs me that Inquisition is still not out for Mac, probably never will be. I loaded it on a Win laptop I have, and it plays, but still kinda ... wonky. I just couldn't get into it, too. I was worried about certain things about the game ... that came true, *sigh*. So I've mostly been playing other stuff...
I have been waiting for Pillars of Eternity, like ... forever. I was so hoping it would meet my anticipations ... expectations.
Wow. It's like reopening a door to some place you thought was gone forever. **Golden warm nostalgia**.
A party of 6 where you can control the tactics/actions of all of them and synergize. Actual text dialogue I can READ to then make choices. Lots of classes to choose from, not just 3 + "kits". Lots of races, too. Combat that works at the pace you prefer ... paused, "slow mode," or fast. Good to see they chucked the antiquated D & D system, moving toward their own IP which makes more sense on a computer ... almost all die rolls being "D100", and game phases based on seconds instead of "rounds".
The cipher & chanter are psionicists & bards made more interesting.
You can play it either "IWD style" with 6 roll-your-owns, or pick up the included companions, and then have all that rich interactivity we love from Bioware games. Point is, the game gives you the choice of doing either ... or mixing & matching to play both ways. Player choice and freedom, just imagine.
Unlike Might & Magic Legacy X, this is more of a retro step back to 2000 instead of 1985. Yes, so it's back to the days of 2.5D isometric graphics. But I have to say, when you have talented artists & a good engine, this can still be as much interesting to look at as "true" 3D. It's still much better than the old Infinity Engine days.
One interesting thing about the game world difference: PoE's game world definitely has active gods, priests, and religion in it once again, in fact "soul technology" seems pivotal to the plot. I'm not saying this is better or worse than the "question mark" religion of Inquisition's game world, but it is interesting to see that type of fantasy world again.
You know, I tried Wasteland 2, and it's got some redeeming features, but I'm still liking PoE a whole lot better. I think it's just a genre thing; have never loved games in the post-apocalyptic genre as much as 'hard' space opera sci-fi or fantasy.
They seem to be very mod-friendly for their game, as opposed to DA:I, where it seems there will be mods trickling out but with zero help from the development team, including any official mod tools.
And finally, hate me hate me for saying it, glad to know there's a developer -- Obsidian -- who still develops for PCs, and all PC platforms, Mac OS X & Linux versions all out with the Windows one the same day ... sorry console folks, no console version.
Yes I love this game ... love it love it love it. More than Inquisition.
