Well good news, I think I have finally decided on a character  :D

I just made an Orlean Chanter, and I absolutely love the various chants that I can string together. I currently have the summon skeletons as my 'ultimate' and it has come in handy in defeating larger groups of enemies.

But I think I might have stumbled across a bug, when ever I engage an enemy

Spoiler

they just stand there. I will admit that it does make playing on the hardest difficulty alot easier.  ^_^  But I am experiencing no challenge in playing the game.  :?

Does anyone know of a way to fix this issue?

Okay, I'm tempted by this game because RPGs are my favorite type of game, but worry that because I never played the old IE-based RPGs, I'm going to hate all the pointing and clicking and the slowness of getting around.  I generally play games on consoles, I grew up that way on Atari's in the 1980s and that's what I'm used to.  I've tried some of the older PC games and just cannot adjust to how slow they are.  I don't mean, hey combat is complex or turn-based (I like turn-based games).  I mean that it takes me forever to move from point A to point B and I get tired of having to hit buttons to do things that the game should do automatically (or almost automatically).  And I admit, it's a big adjustment to use the computer keyboard instead of a control pad (just like my husband who grew up on PC games can never seem to get the feel of using a control pad.  I cannot get through Morrowind, for example, even though I think the story and world in it are probably the best of any ES game, but the controls feel clunky and old to me compared to Oblivion and Skyrim and eventually it just wears me down because so much of it feels like a chore.

I should say that I liked DA:O, hated DA:2 with the burning white heat of the sun (repeat dungeons, claustrophic Kirkwall, and horrible combat mechanics on the PS3), and like DA:I quite a bit when there is actual banter and I skip a bunch of the fetch quests like collecting the shards.  I love novels, but have never been a big fan of codexes in DA or, rather, I absolutely love some of them, but there are too many on things I don't care about (not that I'd have them taken out, since I know others probably love every one of them, but I also wouldn't want to have to read them all).

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out whether to give PoE a try or not.  I just got a new Mac that would actually run it really well.  The videos look super dull, but I think that about watching most RPG games.  Any guidance?  Would Divinity be a better choice for a PC RPG for me?

Same here (Im also a sucker for bows and animals, heard ranged rogue was much better, but Im in love with animal companions).
She started off quite weak (using Pale Elf instead of Wood), but I have given her a wounding shot which hobbles the opponent and the wolf a sneak attack ability. The wolf now deals some really good damage to opponents that qualify before he manages to lose health. I dont know how far it will hold, but so far this is the combination that got me through most of the enemies.

Just started my archer with a wolf pet too. Its an amazing game and I'm loving it so far!

Are you sure you arent confusing it? The guys turn to ash (you can get some sort of crafting ingredient i think from them) and the robed guy disappears. You arent supposed to fight him yet.

Hmm, PoE does feel slow and requires quite a lot of micromanagement on your part. You dont hit buttons but you have to select your character's actions for every battle. Your party consists of 6 people so you have to micro-manage them all. Its definitely for people that get a kick out of it to be fair.

And I think unlike Baldur's Gate II you cant assign them scripts so they would automatically cast spells and use abilities. At least I havent found this option.

If these things dont scare you, then it is a truly beautiful game in my opinion. It has a tremendous attention to detail and a lot of cool little things that bring joy. Your stats matter in conversations and actions, and things can turn out differently based on how you approach different quests. The cool things are that, contrary to what we are usually used to, sometimes using dialogue options that require certain stats dont bring the best result, so you have to be careful what you pick. You also gain a sort of reputation in how your character responds to the world. I think there are... 8? And the world responds to that reputation. New dialogue options open in some places and in others they close off.

There are 6 races and each has 2-3 subraces, 11 different classes, 7 cultures, and varied backgrounds that all add certain bonuses to your character. So you can mix and match to you heart's content.

There is tons of writing, most of the narrative is written, and no animations. To be honest I like reading, but DA codexes also got very tedios for me up to the point that I completely skipped them in Inquisition. Yet Im gulping down everything PoE shows me. The stuff is relevant and does provide great atmosphere.

So its up to you really. :)

Honestly? Pillars would be a better game for you than D:OS. Divinity is completely turn based. If you like the action more, slap Pillars on the lowest difficulty and the highest speed and just see what happens. You'll need to activate your party's skills (they won't do it on their own), but on lower difficulties, this might not matter.

I'd say if you are intent on buying one of the two, pick up Pillars. But don't buy either unless you feel comfortable - I wouldn't want anyone to make a peer pressure purchase on either game.

I really like the difficulty in the game. Played for about 6 hours on hard so far and died more often than in my 90+ hours on nightmare in Inqusition. Combat is a lot more tactical. Simple skill spamming like in Dragon Age isn't possible.

Meh, I tried Easy and can definitely confirm that if you don't manually use skills and spells you die, not as much as in other difficulties of course, but some level of micro-management is still required.

Yup, and there is even an option for masochists with a single save that gets deleted if your party dies. So basically perma-death.

Yeah, doesn't work well for me either.

The bonus is +10 freeze and +10 burn resistances.

I normally go with a race I find cool and with a class I find most interesting, so sometimes I pick the worst races for the worst classes and then suffer the consequences :D all for RP reasons

You are a masochist I see..

Currently rolling a Male Wood Elf Wizard. The fact that we can have more than one spellbook is awesome.

I never played a game like this either. Been playing on easy, an hour and a half in and so far im loving it.

It was a bit overwhelming at first, well, it still is tbh. But im willing to put the effort in, because so far its been a rewarding experience.

On another note, I went back and started a new game. Decided on an amaua or however thats spelled. Hes a fighter and yeah he is awesome.

I never claimed otherwise :D

Long live role-playing!

I also like the fact that spellbooks can also deal damage in case you run out of spells. Never threw a spellbook at an enemy before. :D

I'm about, idk, 4-6 hours in now and I'm having a great time. I ultimately went with the most boring option ever, a male human fighter, as that's what I usually play first in most RPGs (I did create about 5 other characters though ^^).

So far I didn't encounter any relevant bugs, aside from the game crashing three times around the process of creating a hireling.

So out of curiosity, this game doesn't have any love interests/romance for the main character, correct? (I think I read somewhere about the reputation and disposition system with NPCs and companions, but I haven't read anything about LIs)

The game does have far less reactions to race than Inquisition does, for instance. On the other hand, it reacts to your stats more. I suppose choices had to be made.

Albeit it is a bit weird that nobody comments on my Pale Elf PC despite them being so rare in Dyrwood even seeing one is uncommon.

Actually, a lot of NPC do comment on Pale Elf (speaking from experience, since I am playing one). However, there is nothing particular repelling about the race so, nothing to be scared of. But a lot of conversations begins with "Oh!" (Pale Elf) "Have not seen your kind around" - or something like this. Or "long look", "strange look", "suspicious look" with regards to (Pale Elf) as indicated in chat.

Correct, no romaces and not going to be added. As developers stated "there will be enough interaction and complicate relations with companions as it is".

Btw just read on IE mod that they have already added a way to respec your companions from lvl 0. It is somewhat broken now since the companions lose their racial bonuses. But they said they would fix the issue in a few days.

If anyone's interested you can grab it at PoE Nexus page.

Finally a game worthy of the BG/IWD legacy. Divinity:Original Sin was a fair attempt but I just didn't like it, PoE hooked me in slowly but surely. I already made it to the first town and started forming my party at the inn. I love the character customization, the non-archetypal classes(Chanter, Cipher), the storage system, the combat and even the visuals. I wasn't going to buy it initially but a friend noticed it on my Steam wishlist and gifted me his extra copy. I'm playing as an ice elf Cipher :)

Checked the Codex, out of curiosity.

Next to nothing positive being said, mostly harping on the found bugs and the lack of difficulty in a lot of situations because of it. Otherwise, just not a lot of posts about it so far. Pretty odd, considering it has an entire subforum dedicated to it.

Thanks much for the thoughtful responses.  I'm still fiddling around with DA:I now that my banter is back, but I'll probably give PoE a try in the next couple of weeks.   Worse thing that happens is that I don't like it and lesson learned.  FWIW, I don't mind having to command all of the characters, so that part should be good.  Of course, if there are really that many character build choices, I may never get out of the first act anyway since I usually re-roll my character several times in any new RPG until I find a good fit.  I didn't finish DA:I until something like my 4th or 5th playthrough because I felt compelled to go back and try something else instead.

Thanks again!

Having a blast so far. Currently weeding out the ruins under my stronghold.

But to be perfectly honest, I can't wait to do Path of the Damned with a fully customized party.

Do I even get a fighter companion? I so expected one, now I'm playing way more tanky with my pc than I wanted to.

There is a fighter companion in the Gilded Vale. He is standing at the tree in the center, you can talk to him about joining after certain main quest events. Dwarf woman event.

Rule of thumb on the Codex, if they're discussing the game from the perspective of active players during a game's release, then they like it. If they're talking about game balance, optimal builds and problem bugs, then they are enjoying it.

Garryydde brought up a good point when we were discussing this earlier, after all the shittalking Sawyer has done about 'grognards', people on the Codex wouldn't want to admit he's right.

Also,

I kinda wish they included romance, because I enjoyed every single one they did in the past games, even if they were buggy, notoriously unfinished and incomplete. Im not even sure its the romance part but more the characters they have chosen for it, and the diverse dynamics they managed so well to convery. For a team that doesnt like romances they are surprisingly good at it imho.

That said the lack of it does not in no way detract from my enjoyment of the game. I even forgot its not present tbh.

There have been a couple of conversations with a few companions when i kinda envisioned the dialogue to go romance. Its just in me from all those years of playing Bioware games. On the other hand it doesn't bother me that haven't included it. I am having way to much fun and bedtime is ruined again :/
