I wasn't comparing it to d&d, that was reviewer. I'm glad it doesn't use d&d rules, I always prefer something new.

But it's true that I do think the 3rd edition was better: armour choices were handled better, a wider variety of talents and non combat skills and favoured skills for each class, multiclassing, specialist mages, talents to increase the dc of certain spells instead of relying on accuracy...

What an edgy review. Thing is even if I vehemently disagree with the conclusion, Roxor makes plenty of points that are hard to disagree with. Couldn't agree more on the encounter design.

When combined with how much filler combat there is, it can feel like trudgery at times. I like the shift away from combat exp, but the map design doesn't really accomodate much combat avoidance. So I can see how it can feel unrewarding. Itemisation and crafting is undeniably bland. Although quests have multiple outcomes, payoff and consequences often feel lacking or stunted. Points about the Stronghold are also hard to ignore.

But despite all these flaws and more, it's still a big accomplishment for Obsidian. More importantly, it's a fantastic foundation for future games. Elements are all there. This particular Codex Review is more concerned about what PoE isn't (it's not BG, it's not D&D, etc), rather than what PoE is. That's the problem with Codex and a highly anticipated game. If it doesn't perfectly align with expectations, it's ****.

Not surprising at all, but I wonder how VD's Review will differ. There may even be a third review afterwards. Personally, I think it's a better RPG than Divinity: Original Sin, though I've had higher points of enjoyment with Div:OS.

In either case, I'm very happy with the game. It's far from perfect, but it largely delivers on what it promised. And I am an advocate of a game being more than the sum of it's parts. I also like the review, though. Brings up too many valid points to ignore and hopefully Obsidian take them into account when making future games and expansions.

On the mechanics side, I certainly won't disagree there are a lot of structural problems with the ruleset. But all rulesets for RPGs suck on some level, and all of them are rife with lots of structural problems. I don't particularly like POE's mechanics, but I think they're OK. But the idea that somehow 2e or 3e D&D was better or good, that's where you lose me.

Also, a thousand times yes on the fixed camera. The amount of times I was trapped underneath trees...

I have to echo with agreement here after reading that really awesome review. I felt the mechanics system in PoE was ultimately OK, but while agreed with several points raised in the review, I was also constantly baffled why the reviewer felt that the old IE games did this so much better? The more they went in to details and that point, the more confused I was because a lot of the stuff they were describing were worse in the old games. On a more positive side, PoE using the same baseline has actually made me appreciate more DA's approach to several things.

My largest problem with PoE is actually the story and party, although to be fair due to certain bizarre decisions in quest design I have to start the game from beginning after completing about two thirds way through before. Even after having played it for over 25+ hours and enjoying, kind of, there really aren't any parts of the story where I reflect back and think how great it was. Everything just kind of happened. I am also thoroughly frustrated by the how heavily they try to enforce every decision being grey and deep, to the point where there have been several points in the game where there has been an obvious middle-road solution to the problem, yet no such option has been even offered to try.

Recovery percentage refers to how quickly your character can take actions. Whenever your characters do something, a bar at the top slowly whittles down until it allows your character to take another action. This could range from things like using abilities, using spells or just standard attacking. So say, the heavier your armor, the slower your recovery time, meaning that you have to wait longer between actions (attacks, abilities, etc). Mobility v Protection.

As for formations, you can click the formation button at the bottom of the screen. You can also right click one of the two custom formation buttons in order to create and customize your own formation rather than the defaults.
This tends to be my playstyle too.

Tanks (Paladin and Chanter) in the front row. Rogue, Cipher, Druid and Ranger in my back row. Pet dead centre between the two rows, as a last resort to protect the back row with takedown. I'm using a Lion pet, and his Roar can affect the enemies charging at my meatshields, so he's not completely useless if he isn't engaged in melee.

The Rogue and Cipher on the sides since they can handle themselves in Melee if necessary while the Druid and Ranger in the middle as the squishiest in my group. Could easily substitute my Ranger for a Priest or Wizard, the idea is the same. It's a pretty basic formation and sometimes I have to change it up indoors, but it works quite well for me. It's not a universal opinion, but I like the engagement mechanics for this reason. Formation and positioning are difficult to make work as genuine gameplay components in party based RPGs that aren't turn based. So I support endeavours to make them more important.

That said, I can't figure out how to make the party move as a formation or if it's even possible. I would really like it if I could do that tbh.

Hmm, what is the max level in this game and where can I find all the companions? I want to gather them as quickly as possible.

Thanks everyone for your help. This game literally became 10 times better after finding out that I can have custom formations. Wooh, now I should work on gathering the rest of my party and getting useful spells.

I'm playing on Mac, one pet peeve I have is that the game won't allow me to switch back to chrome or use any other program while it is running. I have to quit game to do that. At least it runs smoothly and loads fast but that's expected.

Man, I thought my review was a bit harsher than most.

Then again, I can't expect anything good out of the RPG Codex.

Spoiler

Just recruited my only 'normal' companion: Pallegina. Of course, she's also a Godlike. Am not going to actively use her though, will only use her to do adventures and other stuff at the stronghold and ultimately will do her personal quest.

Does anyone else use custom portraits in this game other than me? I have to do that for games like this, I also did it in NWN2 and 1.

Finally spent a chunk of time messing around in act 2 after putting the game on hold for a while. Just going to say right now, I might actually roll a cipher at some point cause the class is amazingly fun. I guess it's amusing in that when the game first came out, cipher was the class I was eyeballing the most before ending up on druid. It'll probably happen eventually though. That being said, Grieving Mother is amazing as a character and there is a lot of potential I do hope they hit with her being a cipher sharing a connection with the Watcher. Scooped up Pallegina too and all I could think of was "Why can't *I* be an avian godlike?!"

I'm up to the point where I am tracking the Leaden Key, completed the Sanitarium point last night and wandered off to work in Heritage Hill. I had a bit of an amusing bug though. After getting kicked around by

Spoiler
in Searing Falls, any melee attackers after loading my game and leaving the area would simply stand there instead of attacking. It sorted itself out eventually but I had to laugh a bit.

So I picked this up today as the Hero edition + bonus dlc was on sale for £13. I believe the bonus DLC included a ring or something as well as a glow in the dark in-game pet, which I like.

I've only spent about 20 minutes with it, designed a Female Elf. As of late, I've been trying to play through rpg's as a Female, as its not something I've done with. It's mainly due to the customizations, I'm more skilled at making a Male that I can sit back and go "Yep, thats my character" and not for Females. But I hope to change that.

Anyway, I noticed right of the bat just how different it is, and its lovely. All I've done is picked up the berries, and heading to find a water source, so I'm looking forward to seeing what awaits. Also decided to play a Archer, as in my current Origin playthrough, I'm playing a Rogue with a Bow.

My only gripe is the keybindings. There are a lot of things I've not seen in other games.

I was wondering if anyone could write out what key-bindings they have for each option, or snap a screenshot and post it. Or if you have recommendations on what kind of keybinds I should have for certain things.

I'd greatly appreciate it :)

Keybindings? I just click things :P

Though I do use backspace to select the entire party, but that's normal configuration. And the number keys to select convo options. But everything else is just clicking.

Anyway, just finshed act 2 with my Godlike party:
Spoiler

Don't get too distrought when you see the stats ;) Upgraded everyone's armor, except the mage I think, with a +2 ability score and there's a massive resting bonus in play (+2 might, +2 con, +2 int)

Unexpectedly btw, the Druid has the 2nd highest damage output. And that's not just because of the AoE's, I don't use them all the time. It's more because of the spiritshift (wolf) I use almost every fight and hits for 30+ damage every hit.

It took me an entire playthrough to realise that to keybind abilities you need to hover over the ability and then press whatever key you want.

Is there anyway to see enemies weaknesses without going to the journal? Is there any way to disarm traps? I have tried to open two chests and they had traps and I couldn't do anything about it.

Why can't I move the camera 360 degrees?

Holy hell, I didn't read that review but RPG codex is incredibly negative.

You need the Mechanics skill to disarm traps. The higher the skill the higher level the trap you can disarm.

And if you disarm it, you get to keep it and maybe use it later on an enemy

I have two characters with a mechanics skill of four and I'm in the dungeon of drywood and I've fallen for two traps so far. Neither of my characters can even detect the traps.

For future games, I'd only upgrade the mechanics skill of only one of your characters: your priest. Everybody else can keep 0 points in it.

Why the Priest? Cause apparantly, mechanics also influences Seals (spell traps). Or so I've read. I don't use em much, but apparantly they are really awesome.

Everybody else can do without.

My priest and my main character have the mechanics skill. Since I'm a chanter I have the lore skill, but my wizard partner has it much higher.

Another pet peeve I have is the lack of unique weapons and the all around lack of armors. I've barely found any decent armor in this game.
