I have been playing around with different party members and different skill sets and I want to share what works for me and hear what works for others. One of the things I like about this build is I can switch control to any party member and the AI can control the other members decent enough.

1. Tank - 1H
2. Archer
3. Fire Mage
4. Lightning Mage

Both mages use Barrier, Energy Barrage /w upgrade and conductive current. Fire mage has a fire staff plus uses immolate/fire mine. Lightning mage has staff plus full lightning tree. I don't use dispell mostly because I haven't really needed it. Its a good skill to try and squeeze in if you want. Also I don't use fade step, I might if my main was a mage but haven't really needed it yet either.

My tank uses payback strike plus the upgrade and turn the bolt and most of the vanguard tree.

My archer uses stealth, long shot, and the right side of the archery tree.

I don't use optimal gear because I don't look up spoilers or item locations. I mainly just use whatever I can craft or loot. I haven't played past skyhold so no idea how this team holds up.

This team fights really well together and it doesn't matter which member I control. The lightning holds mobs in place making them sitting ducks for my fire mage and archer. My tank runs around knocking people over and doesn't seem to lose guard very often. Honestly at this point barrier doesn't do much and its not really needed unless im overwhelmed.

For pre-skyhold I focus on cross-class combos.

I go with

  • Tank: 2H with pommel strike stun
  • Rogue: mercy killer rogue with knockout powder set on preferred
  • Mage: Barrier, Dispel, Immolate -> Wall of Fire
  • Inquisitor

If the Inquisitor is 2h warrior I would remove the tank and take another mage with the same spec

If the Inquisitor is a rogue I would remove the Rogue companion and take a second mage with the same spec

If the Inquisitor is a mage I would run it as above and the rogue would be an Archery rogue with leaping shot.

With a rogue Inquisitor you sleep the bad guys and call down an airstrike aka combo via the attack my target button.

Stun + Eldritch Detonator = Rupture -> 1200% Spirit damage and Weakness

Sleep + Eldritch Detonator = Nightmare -> 800% Spirit Damage and Panic

In general this means you just killed whatever you slept and if not you induced panic which triggers your mercy killing crits, so finish it off.  in any case you didn't even break the CC since all you did was a lot of damage and swap sleep CC for panic CC.

I tried something like that at first but I wasn't nearly as effective with it as the setup I use now. I like how multiple builds can work smoothly together. The first effects on the combo stun only lasts a few seconds and sleep gets removed from any attack. For me personally I use combo's but I found building my characters around them to be less efficient especially when controled by the AI. Probably wouldn't be the case if you like micro managing your party but I'm not a huge fan of that.

Probably going to get some arguments, but I would never use a 2H tank on nightmare outside of Blackwall + Champion spec.  I do run with 1 tank, 1 archer, and 2 mages.  One mage is heavy spirit (left side) with barrier on preferred.  The second mage is heavy lightning (static cage++).  I will drill down to get ice mine ASAP on one of them and leverage shatter as a cross-class combo.  I primarily use sleep as actual crowd control rather than to setup a cross-class combo.

See. I have issues with identical ai mages.  The AI tends to have them cast the same spells at the same time which if your going for disabling affects can kind of make you waste one of your spells.  it can be funny for a time for x marks the spot firewalls or things like that sometimes but that's about it.

Bigdawg and I are pretty much using the same setup only change is he's using spirit and I'm using fire. Solas is using fire mostly because I haven't had much need for the spirit tree yet but my plan is to have him fire/spirit and Viv lightning/Ice once they get more skill points.

That's why you use "preferred" on one mage but not the other.
