I have been playing a dagger rogue and loving it.  She was destined to be an artificer though it took me until level 14 to finish the darn specialization quest.  The canyon alpha quillback didn't drop anything and so I had to get short list and my dalish rep up.

But with my intention to go Artificer I spec'd into Spinning Blades and found it very enjoyable.  I actually don't like Shadow Strike and with Deathblow bugged right now there seems on reason not to use Spinning Blades.  Obviously the build has some requirements like Look Like it Hurts.  For combat movement I find upgraded Flank Attack and Evade are amazing.  Prior to being an artificer I found Spinning Blades great even with the crap gear I have (still T2 dual blades) but once I got Opportunity Knocks I found the whole spec became very fluid.  Stealth comes off cooldown so quickly now that it is always available as an escape/repositioning skill and I can almost chain Spinning Blades into Spinning Blades.  I have been using the Enchanced Spinning Blades ring which is a damage boost of 33% (based on tooltip changes 100/75=33%) and it is a lot of fun.  I build guard like mad, I don't have a damage proc yet since my luck on fade-touch materials has been poor.

I am using the Sera crit turret build giving her mercy killing, long shot, explosive shot and flask of fire/lightning.  She is set up to just use a flask and spam her shots like a little machine gun causing crits like mad.  I am using Solas atm with Wall of Fire but I am considering going to Dorian and setting him up with a panic all the time build.  In fact I will do that when I get home again.  The synergy is nice on paper since upgraded Horror does spirit damage and sunders while Blinding Terror gives the team a 15% damage buff vs panic.  I will give Dorian the immortal necro gearing and spec so he will do heal on hit masterwork which combined with Simulacrum means when Dorian dies he just pops up again and keeps on spamming spells.  I want to see what happens with him on a dragon fight if I just let the AI run him.  I will set his potion reserve to 8 and give it a try later.

Once I gear up I want to see if I can spam spinning blades on a dragon.  That will be hilarious.

Could you elaborate a bit on the pros and cons of spinning blades? I love rogue but I never used spinning blades due to skill-starvation. I'd be really interested in how the animation and CD works for combat fluidity.

I enjoyed both Tempest and Assassin but I'm trying out Artificer for my latest PT. I'm not very good at it but I'm getting better and now I'm liking it better than I could ever imagine I would although I do like the other two specializations better. I think playing Assassin is my favorite of the three, Tempest is second, and Artificer is third.

Of course.  The animation is quick, the spin does AOE damage and I often hit multiple targets, you move slightly forward during the animation.  I found the animation easier to deal with then shadow strike, it seems faster though I expect time to complete is longer than shadow strike but you start damaging right away which makes positioning easier.  Additionally if you whiff entirely the skill doesn't go on cooldown or consume stamina.  If you are trying to close with an enemy flank attack or twin strike is the way to go.  Spinning Blades is for when you are in the scrum already.

Video here at 00:48 is spinning blades    Note this is not my dragon kill, just an example I dug up.

Regarding Artificer vs Assassin.  Artificer is a fluid force on the battlefield.  My next point will be the Stealth upgrade now since Stealth comes off cooldown so fast that I find I want to use it to move through enemies.  I even use spike trap now.  I drop it pre-fight next to my ranged forces and then move into engage.  This gives the ranged duo a wee bit more space before enemies get into them.  I don't even have elemental mines yet.

Seconding this. I strongly considered getting it for my agility rogue (basically, the rogue was built around Solas' comment to rogues, so she focused on flicking daggers and graceful movement), but it's incredibly expensive, considering that it goes through 2 useless passives. Mama Lavellan needed her Pincushion, her assassin skills, her Sneak Attack, and her sundering/armor pen passives first. By the time I'd gotten all the passives I wanted, she was level 23 and could kill Corypheus with a stern glare.

However, I'm still curious if it's worth it for the multi-hit aspect. The movement aspect is meh, to me, since upgraded Hook and Tackle is slightly cheaper in skill points, longer range, and free to use (both in cooldown and stamina). But multi-hit abilities are nice.

My Artificer build at level 15 is 18 points (human + crestwood amulet)

  1. Caltrops
  2. Look Like it hurt
  3. Cheap Shot
  4. Stealth
  5. Evasion
  6. Evade
  7. Spike Trap
  8. Opportunity Knocks
  9. Flank Attack
  10. Flank Attack+
  11. Twin Fangs
  12. Twin Fangs+
  13. Dance of Death
  14. Sneak Attack
  15. Bloodied Prey
  16. Unforgiving Chain
  17. Spinning Blades
  18. Spinning Blades+

With my enhanced SB ring my Spinning Blades does 900% weapon damage over 9 hits.  It almost always regenerates its stamina cost and applies 9 20% sundering effects that stack.  It triggers my on hit abilites 9 times.  My goal is for this to be 5 guard/hit, 10% for 5 hidden blades, heal 1% on hit.  The heal/guard should help me with those 360 degree maul attacks.  I am not always good at evading.  And when I can get pincushion it will be even more nuts.  Oh and it uses only the main hand for weapon damage so you can put your crappy weapon in your off-hand.

More edits:  10% on hit means spinning blades has a 61.25% chance of activating per invocation.  If you use it twice in a row that becomes 85%. With a crit team I am pretty sure I will be spamming it shortly.  I am working toward Sneak attack on Sera now.

Oh, one other thing.  When Upgraded Spinning Blades hits multiple mooks it is 9 hits per mook.  This is insanely fun and means that Spinning Blades has higher potential than the Archer's leaping shot.  Though leaping shot is obviously great on dragons.  I also believe the ring for enhanced leaping shot is broken which means that for spinning blades wins the consistent damage battle while having less chances to proc against big single targets.  Against anything grouped tightly enough to hit multiples then Spinning Blades is superior.

BTW the math indicates that Pincushion from Archery is +180% total damage to the entire spinning Blades.  Higher if you have been hitting the target more in the past 10 seconds.  So apparently I am going to get pincushion before I get elemental bombs.

I love Spinning Blades so I thought I'd tell you why:

It's very useful against a single target, but will strike multiple others without a downside. If it's upgraded and the last strike hits a target (even if the first ones did not) it will knock all targets to the ground, which is very useful. I frequently knock down 3+ enemies. If you use its ring, all strikes will do 100% weapon damage, so you can deal 900% weapon damage (without Pincushion) to one target or more in a very short amount of time. Lastly, having masterworks that trigger on hits is extremely useful in combination with SB. In MP my Assassin has 10% chance of Chain Lightning and 10% of Hidden Blades, and using SB is basically a guarantee of activation both, doing heavy single target damage with some AoE as a bonus.
