I dont have any issues with other games (various recent EA sports game, CoD, Left 4 Dead, etc) but for some reason ME2 doesn't play sound through all 5 speakers. Only the default 2, left and right front speakers, play sound. Anyone else running into this problem?

what sound device are you using? is it a Realtek chipset device? or is it soundcard, like a creative soundblaster?

Its a builtin audio module. SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio. I looked at the config tool and it says in Speaker Configuration 5.1 so I don't know whats up with this.

I have the same problem. it looks like for me1 some people were able to hack a config file but I couldn't find the same keywords in any config files for me2. I have a realtek chipset on an asus p6t and also a m-audio revolution 7.1 sound card. I want to output 5.1 through optical or digital coax to my reciever. anyone?

Okay I found the fix for the original ME which oddly enough never gave me any problems with 5.1 surround sound. In any case I copied and pasted this part:
UseEAX=True
Use3DSound=True
UseDefaultDriver=True
MaxEAXVersion=5
UsePrecache=True
MaxChannels=128
CompatibilityMode=False
UseFilter=True
UseReverb=True
TimeBetweenHWUpdates=15
UseEffectsProcessing=False
LowQualitySound=False
DisablePitch=False
OutputRate=48kHz
MinOggVorbisDurationGame=20
MinOggVorbisDurationEditor=4
NoHALSupport0=RealTek AC97
NoHALSupport1=SigmaTel Audio
NoHALSupport2=Realtek HD Audio output
NoHALSupport3=Sound Blaster Audigy
NoHALSupport4=SB Audigy
//DeviceName=
DeviceName=
Under the [ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice] section. I erased whatever was there and pasted the above. I can now hear sound from all of my speakers but the rear two (the ones that had no sound before) is very faint. I have to max out the sound settings on the rear two and lower the sound on the front two to balance out the volume but this results in terrible sound quality (it sounds hollow).

Hmm. I'd love to know what's going on with sound and the ME games. I had a terrible time getting surround sound for my 7.1 setup in ME. Since I've only managed about 35 minutes of ME2 so far, I've not paid too much attention to trying to get it to work in ME2 but I did notice that the sound was primarily (if not entirely) from my front speakers. It'll be awfully annoying if I have to go through all that troubleshooting again.
Whatever happened to games having speaker setups in their configurations?

I totally agree. This is another glaring example of don't change what doesn't need changing.

hi rumblefv, i saw something similar for me1, however I can't find [ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice] . your looking in program files/mass effect 2/ biogame/ config/defaultengine.ini right?
the closest I see is this:
// BIOSTART - Aug 21, 2008 - David Streat - Setting the AudioDeviceclass to ISACT in DefaultEngine.ini. It
// was set in BaseEngine.ini before.
AudioDeviceclass=WwiseAudio.WwiseAudioDevice

Sorry forgot to include the filename. This was in bioengine.ini in the same folder.

mine doesn't have any files named bioengine.ini in the config folder, only defaultEngine.ini which in turn has no keyword like you used. can you copy and paste it and maybe I can create it? thanks

one question, I want to output 5.1 through my digital optical or digital coax to a reciever, do I have to use my sound cards analogue outs to get 5.1? does it not support dts or dolby digital?

THIS WORKED FOR ME!
Both Mass 1 & 2 and DragonAge all gave me trouble with 5.1 surround sound. Using a Soundblaster Audigy 2 card. Seems to have the same problem with surround in other games also (Last Remnant being one of them)
Well, i found an easy enough fix. I'm not sure if this will work for all cards, but i'm assuming all soudblasters;
CHANGE YOUR SOUND SETUP IN THE AUDIO CONSOLE (creative) OR THROUGH CONTROL PANEL-->SOUND AND CHANGE YOUR SPEAKER SETUP TO QUADROPHONIC.
You only miss out on the centre speaker but at least you get quad sound instead of what i settled for before, Stereo, yuk
Hope this helps

Don't you lose the dedicated LFE in quadrophonic, though?

I'd like to know as well. I am using my ATI HD5850s to output via HDMI to a Denon AVR-391 receiver. For all my other games, it will show up as Dolby Digital 5.1 or 5.1 Plus. But in ME1 and ME2, it is only giving me stereo
