Do you actually fight MORE mages if you side w/the mages?

It just struck me that in the battle of Haven (and a few other places) it seems like you actually face MORE mages if you sided with the mages. It seems like every group of Venatori that spawns includes at least one Spellbinder, but I don't remember seeing any Spellbinders when I sided with the Templars, just Fiona. Am I just remembering things wrong?

What do you mean? You fight Venatori and Fiona if you side with the Templars.

If you side with the mages, you fight Red Templars.  No mages.

I think you're remembering wrong.

Don't mess Venatori Spellbinders with the mages from Redcliffe, you are bound to meet Venatori in either scenario.

You get some leftovers anyway, as a few Red Templars will spawn even after choosing to side with the Templars (for some turned before you get to their HQ in Champions of the Just).

However, I don't recall mages attacking Haven, I completed that quest less than 4 days ago. Perhaps I'm already senile at 35, but I didn't see any mage after siding with them. Still, it's a chaotic and messy battle, I might have just missed them.

I am talking about mages as a class, not an enemy name. So Spellbinders are mages, Red Templars are not, neither are Venatori warriors or rouges.

There are no mages in the battle of Haven if you side with mages, only red templars.

Who you side with has no influence on spawns in the wider world (it's all just random).

I don't remember fighting Ventori at all in haven when I sided with the mages and the ones in the zones are the same either way.

I think "no influence" is a bit overstated. I seemed to run into more random Red Templar camps in the Hissing Waste if I sided with mages, and more random Venatori camps if I sided with Templars. Not exclusively one or the other, just in terms of frequency. I admit, though, it could just be RNG or expectation bias.
