With your post in mind I guess it made sense to let Bono & Co. invest in 2005, after all Bioware had to survive by sales from previous games until Mass Effect launched, and Bioware games are not among the cheapest ones to design, awesome quality B)

Thinking about this some more, I can see why Elevation was able to buy in cheap. 2005 Bio was an independent that had made its rep with licensed IPs it didn't have anymore and had apparently just botched its first original IP. By the time they sold to EA Bio was weeks away from releasing ME1, with DA:O in the pipeline.

Is that why most of the "old-school" Bioware employees have left the company during the last 5-6 years?

People leave companies all the time. I don't expect many people to stay employed in the same place for 15 years in these days and economy.

Kickstarter would not be better for gamers.I would not get to DA or ME because of it.Kickstarter means PC Only so **** that.I also would not donate for a game that hopefully gets made. That is not a good investment.

Bioware will spread their wings and they'll learn to fly....they'll do what it takes till they touch the sky.

Take a risk.

Take a chance.

Make a change.

And breeeeaaak awwaaay, (break away, break away...)

Yep. While Elevation 'only' had to invest $300 million, EA bought Bioware for $860 million. Did EA pay too much? Some speculate, but I'm pretty sure Bioware was (and is!) well worth the cost.

As long as Bioware keep striving for the quality we've seen so far I guess they won't be dictated by EA. As Zeschuk said 4 years after the buyout: "We're not being forced to do anything or told to do anything. We make the decisions :)

http://www.eurogamer...l-us-what-to-do

Hope the philosophy is the same even with Zeschuk and Muzyka gone, I don't want Dungeon Keeper Mobile microtransaction-practices creeping their way into Bioware games.

Wasn't a big impetus for EA's purchase getting TOR specifically besides just expanding their portfolio?

Possibly, I do know that TOR was in development before the buyout took place, so that could have been another attractive option at the time.

I'm sure TOR was a major element of it. The thing with that is that Bioware was IMO clearly a horrid choice to design an MMO.

Bioware is an EA game studio since the days of Dragon Age: Origins..

What you are asking, I think, is for the game staff to quit and start their own company. Unlikely they will do that, as these  are the new kids at the studio and appear to be only console experienced. To what degree is a debatable point.

The Bioware DA:O developers have left (I think after DA2). These are the "old" RPG and  PC knowledgeable developers and have started their own company.  Their new IP is an old style RPG called The Sword Coast : Legends.

I resisted clicking 'pre-order now' after watching that video. That's all I have to say :P

I'm not sure if they even have a legal way out right now.

I hope they do.

They are a division of EA. BioWare was bought outright.

This also assumes that the people working there don't value the relative stability and greater resources of working for a publisher instead of being independent.

One of their competitors, Obsidian, was on the verge of bankruptcy after Microsoft cancelled a project and they didn't have anything else going.

EA are doing a good job of killing off the ME & DA franchises.

Correct me if I'm wrong: EA owns Bioware for eight years now, five out of six games in ME & DA franchises were developed after Bioware was purchased by EA. ME4 is likely to be released in 2016. It looks like EA is really bad at killing franchises...

Dumbing the games down so much you don't even recognize what franchise it is supposed to be, is killing it. Just because it has huge sales doesn't make it a good product.

Who's the "you" there?

Yeah, I'm wondering the same.  He isn't speaking for me, and judging from your posts, he isn't speaking for you either.

The gaming industry would be a hell of a lot better for gamers if they did that, but meh.

Unless you're willing to spend/donate the millions of dollars for an AAA game, EA is a necessary evil at this point.  They are the financial backers as well as the owners.   Kickstarter and/or indie companies are great for smaller games, but I have yet to see an indie/Kickstarter game with full cinematics, voice acting and choices like what BioWare games do.  I suppose I don't see EA as a Source of All Evil.  They are just a business, with a handful of money men calling the shots.  The same as any major corporation.

If you want EA to go under, then stop buying their games.  I read daily how someone thinks that EA is terrible and awful and all of that.  Yet, they keep buying their games.  Someone will declare that they will "never buy a single EA product again" and then give their review after playing the new DLC.  I'm not saying you are like that, but if someone hates EA that much, they need to stop buying their games.

EA also likely owns most of the rights to Mass Effect and Dragon Age.  They might even own part of BioWare's older IPs like Jade Empire.   So you'd have to kiss any future DA or ME games goodbye, as well as possibly any potential sequel to Jade Empire.

Also, I took a look at the major publishers out there.  Honest question: Do you think that DA:I would have been a better game under Ubisoft, Sony, Square, Bandai or Activision?  If you don't like any of those guys, you're SOL.  Those are the big publishers, the ones that have the money to back AAA games.  Given my history with all of those companies, I think BioWare could be in much worse hands in my opinion.

The answer to the OP is a resounding "no."  EA and BioWare are tied for good and if BioWare breaks away, they'd have to change their name since EA owns it.  They've have to find another source for their games budget, and that could take years.  It takes years to develop an AAA game without doing something as drastic as looking for a new publisher.  This wouldn't make BioWare better, this would kill it.

As long as he's not trying to speak for anyone but himself, I don't care.  Rawgrim is rude towards BioWare/EA, but he's almost always decent towards other posters.  I've put up several posts that I'm a fan of the game and I had a lot of fun, and he doesn't flame me for it.  We might disagree, but he's got the luxury (posting on the forums isn't a right) to express his discontent.

You have a funny definition of "killing the franchise" then.
