From what I gather it was a Avvar "god" that was bound by a sect Avvar 800 years ago in hopes to destroy a then fledgling orlais.
Its strongly implied that this "god" is just a powerful spirit (of valor?) he's obviously been twisted into a demon.....so yeah. Dragon abominations are possible.

The "god" is Hakkon, the Avvar god of War and Winter.
