Just glancing at the numbers that I could find, Dragon Age Inquisition sold about 1.4 million. XboxOne was less than 200,000 of that. PC was around 170,000. Now, as a rough guess, let's say that only 300,000 people purchase the DLC from the other systems available. That is still (before costs) several million dollars. That is a whole lotta cash to throw at EA/Bioware JUST to deny customers a chance to purchase the DLC and punish them for NOT purchasing an XBoxOne.
I think this is all down to EA backing the wrong horse.
If you think back to E3 (sorry if i've got that wrong, there's so many gaming press events these days I mix them up all the time lol) a few years back when they announced the next gen consoles, XBoxOne hit the ground running.
Everyone was super impresses and was fairly confident that the new Xbox was going to be the number 1 for the next generation of console players.
I'm willing to bet this is when EA made the deal with Microsoft, I mean what could go wrong?
And then MS kept digging a massive hole for themselves in the following years press events. DRM, marketing it as an entertainment center, not allowing customers to share games with friends etc, etc.
Now fast forward to today, Bioware is left to clean up the fallout. EA doesn't give a sh*t, they got paid and they don't have to deal with the brunt of pi*sed off customer base.
What really worries me is that its shady crap like this that can tank a developing company overnight, I mean hell. look at what happened to Maxis Emeryville at the start of this month.
For the record, I'm not solely having a go at MS, I think Sony would have done the exact same thing in a heartbeat if the above was reversed. They're equally as bad as eachother in that regard.
Its just frustrating as hell to see that they don't have the forethought to realise that ridiculous deals like timed DLC etc, is what's slowly killing the console industry.
And why Valve is doing so damn well.
Woo... Ok, rant over lmao.
