I suppose.
I read this article/interview of Noel Gallagher of Oasis where he explains why his music is **** now, and basically he said it's because he's rich and has toured the world. He said that really raw and timeless creativity can only come from the hungry or those about to leave something they love.
I think Gaider's best work was his early work and Dorian. One was him hungry and the other was him knowing he was going to go.
I don't think the other writers have his "touch" and while I think our characters are all cool and everything, there is no "Morrigan" in the new group and there's no cute and awkward Alastair. I think they were trying to make Josephine that. I think she's cute but she also doesn't have his...I really don't even have the word for it.
I can see why someone wants Morrigan and the old Leliana back because there was a freshness to Leliana and Morrigan was so awful and interesting and touching that you wanted more, more, more.
Very true. I was really sad to see Gaider go. Weekes is pretty good, but it's Gaider's baby.
I really liked many of the characters in DA2 and DAI, but it's true that none have ever topped the "big three" original companions. They will always be my favourites, and for a large number of other players as well I expect.
That said, out of the three of them the only one who seems justifiable for further appearances in games is Morrigan. Even with that said, I'd want to see it done properly and not just for the sake of it. Leliana's role has been great and very enjoyable especially in the Extended Universe, but even I struggle to see further justification for her having a large involvement going forward.
Dragon Age has always been different to Mass Effect in that it's about a world, not a central protagonist. In that sense, changing the cast fits. However, I'd probably say I'm overall more invested in the ME companions because it spans three games and revolves around Shep. I think the trick is making us love the newer characters as much as we did Alistair, Morrigan and Leliana. I think DA2 succeeded better there than Inquisition. The relationships between them and Hawke, and each other, were very well done. Cassandra and Dorian are the only ones who come close for me from DAI. Varric does by virtue of him being so integral to DA2.
Mind you, I struggle to bond with my Inquisitor to the same extent as the Warden and Hawke as well. Inquisition has great moments, but I sometimes wish a little less effort went into the new things like semi open world and more went into they excel at - story and characters.
