I liked DA2. I can't even force myself to finish DA:I, I just do not care at all about the story. I don't care for many of the characters in the party; I don't even like my Inquisitor. Maybe one day I will beat it.
thanks bioware....

DA2 wasn't bad. The combat was faster paced than origins, but I still like DA:O the best. That said, I know I finished 6 pts of DA2, one for each of the Hawkes, and then my HDD crashed and did another 3 PTs, so I played the crap out of that game as well. To me, the biggest reason for my DA:O>DA2 would be the origins. I liked being able to craft my Warden's backstory more than what you get in DA2 with the uniform backstory.

The Hero of Ferelden barely gets a nod. It's clear the team saw what happened with Shepherd and wanted that same reaction for Hawke. Having other origins or referencing the HoF's far greater and selfless accomplishments would diminish that. And then they go and completely miss what made us all love Shepherd.
The writing for characters and plots is so uneven that it's almost painful at times. You could identify Gaider and Helper's contributions with a blindfold over your eyes and an ice pick in one ear. The party is more like a public game of D&D characters than a cast of an epic tale.
But it had good qualities. I thought the combat was much improved. It still retained the robust tactics system (thanks for gutting that in DAI, by the way, you'd hate to have an option that allows people to think). Despite being a little over the top it flowed faster and smother and had better visual and audio feedback. If you were losing a fight, you could tell, unlike some times in Origins.
But what really did DA2 in for me was the absolute character assassination that you did to Leliana. Between game and DLC Bioware destroyed one of the most nuanced, conflicted, and interesting characters in their stable. For that, perhaps a reward? Maybe tickets to the theatre? Jerks.

This is my first venture into the Dragon Age lore. Did not get a chance to play either games before this.

DA:O is one of my all time favourite games. Would recommend. In an age where I can barely be bothered to play through a game once, I played DA:O tons of times.

DA franchise games might not have top notch story and the characters might seem a bit weird but there's definitely something in all the games as well as in Gaider's books.
I would recommend all of them. Audible had a promo campaign in which you get a free audiobook. Can find it by googling the free book promo Audible or something. Listening to DA story while at work for example nicely sets you in the mood for gaming.
