Dear Bioware
Let me begin by stating a fact that should be heeded throughout this post: I love Bioware, I love Dragon Age, and Inquisition is no exception; in fact, it exceeded my expectations. I think the team has once again created something beautiful, a notion that is so easily lost amidst the frequent complaints. But for what it's worth, I applaud you.
I have spent many an hour roaming through the broad, captivating landscapes. Most of these have been very pleasant, as I took in the lovely views and admired the impressive vegetation. However, some of them have been so infuriating that I had to close the game and give myself time to cool off. Activities that help me to relax are things like going for a walk or taking a hike, which, incidentally, I find significantly easier to do in real life than in the game.
Perhaps I am simply inept, but the amount of cliffs that I have slid down at the cost of much health and time, or mountains that took me half an hour to climb to get a little shard, or quests that involved more time running (even mounted after fast-travelling) than reading, speaking and fighting combined, have made me wonder whether the overall mobility in this game is somewhat broken.
I haven't found too many others who feel as strongly on this subject as I do, so maybe it's not worth considering a fix, which I'd understand. But I, personally, would welcome any of the following.
- Make mounts faster. It doesn't make sense to me that all the mounts have identical properties except for unseating damage thresholds. Why can't some be faster than others? If the game's designed such that mounts don't have individual speed attributes, then I would still like a slight speed increase in all of them.
- Make mounts jump higher. Again, it would be groovy if you could have some mounts jump higher than others, as I think some, like a horse, would look weird jumping higher than it does presently.
- Give mounts momentum. The current sprint speed is actually great for manoeuvring through mountain passes and windy paths, but if mounts could speed up a bit over time on a long, straight stretch, that would be immensely helpful in getting to distant quests.
- Automatic mounting. When would you ever summon your mount if you didn't want to climb onto it? Surely it would make more sense to automatically climb atop thy steed when pressing the Summon Mount key/button?
- Make mounts climb. This one seems like a bit of a stretch, so I kept it for last. What if some mounts were capable of climbing steeper slopes than others? This would make them super handy when you're heading to mountainous regions littered with collectables.
I realise that this would change the intended dynamic of mounts quite substantially, and it would mean more frequent switching to pick the right mounts for the right terrains, but overall I feel like it would enhance the experience and make mounts a more desirable form of transport; right now I feel like you can pretty much do without them.
Of course, if you want to throw in a jet pack or paraglider, that would work too. But whether any of these get implemented or not, I want to close how I opened, and once again thank you for a truly magnificent and enthralling game, whose tiny flaws are drastically outweighed by its overall glory.
Cool runnings,
Mielieman
