37. And in my time, controllers had ONE button (Atari). :D

My Atari had two. I must have had a fancier model.

I don't know what that is, but it's not a 2600 joystick.

I don't know what that is, but it's not a 2600 joystick.

Not the one that came with the system, apparently, but it was a brand that worked with it:

That's the one my Dad had for his, which was what I started gaming on when I was a wee little girl.

Just yanking your chain. I got a couple of pretty fancy joysticks myself when the original ones broke.

It's safe to assume the second button did nothing right?

I remember taking my $5 weekly allowance and blowing it in a few short hours in establishments like this.  Hey, where's Donkey Kong Junior!!?

LOL @ kid on the pinball machine.  He's really getting into it.  I used to as well.  Amazing how moving your body all over makes no difference to the game, but you do it anyway.

And yes, I walked to the arcade in snow, in my underwear.  Ahhh, those were the days.

Close, I'm 50.

My daughters despair that I run around killing demons and dragons (usually as female characters) in my spare time.

(But why should the youngsters have all the fun.

Computer games weren't this good didn't exist when I was 15...)

Ah, those heady days of Wing Commander, Strike Commander and Privateer.

Don't forget Pong. I enjoyed that game when it came out. It would be nice to have the game for today's platforms

I'm lucky in that my nieces are gamers, and PC gamers to boot, and completely get why I enjoy RPG's. I even took them through a couple of MEMP games back in the summer to help them with the mechanics before setting them off into the wild to dominate the masses.

Not that I've ever had a problem talking to them, but it's always funny to find them huddled up at family gatherings talking about games they're playing.

Even though I'm 30 people tell me I act like I'm 50+.

I'm assuming they mean I'm a responsible, family-minded, mature, wise, and financially well-to-do pillar of my community.

It probably means I'm a crotchety ass old mofo.

I had an Atari 2600 too! With two buttons. Loved those games, River Raid, Tank Commander, Ghostbusters, Pitfall, Space invaders..

Oh the nostalgia.

I had a console that looked a lot like Atari 2600, except the controllers were narrower and the console itself had slots you could insert the controllers when not playing.

No idea what that console was but I got it when I was 7 in '87.

Or you have what I've been told is an "old soul". Never knew whether to be offended by that or not. Think I'm just crotchety for my age too. heh

Pretty sure it had a small joystick and one small orange button. The whole thing looked like a slice of cake I remember.

Being called an old soul is like when you're out on a date and at the end of the night someone says "oh you have a wonderful personality".

The Atari control I had looked like a slice of cake, it had a joystick at the top with 2 red buttons on each side, and a number pad on the bottom half.  I forgot what model it was but I'm sure I can just google it and find out.  The system itself had a compartment where you could stash the controllers I remember that.

LOL

As far as I recall, that second button didn't do a damned thing.

Back in my day, games only existed in my head and on the table top of my friends twice removed kissing cousin's basement.

d20 life.

That's my only regret. As much as I love RPG games and as wild as my imagination is, there was never a group of my peers that was doing pen-n-paper games. We all hung out either outside playing or at each other's houses doing 2-player SNES/Genesis games. Looking back now, I'd have had a ball with a D-n-D group.

I suppose that's why I love writing in my spare time. Working on a fantasy novel is like creating all those RPG characters I would have loved to play or interact with in such a setting. It's just happening in my head now rather than in a group setting.

I'm lucky in that my nieces are gamers, and PC gamers to boot, and completely get why I enjoy RPG's. I even took them through a couple of MEMP games back in the summer to help them with the mechanics before setting them off into the wild to dominate the masses.

Heh, similar thing here. When my second cousin (male) realized I was a gamer, too, it blew his mind (apparently, the "women don't game" thing is still alive and strong even in his millennial generation) and now every family party, here's this 14-year-old kid talking gaming with me, asking my opinion on this game or that system. Been happening now since he was around 12 or so. So, imagine this scene: 14-year-old and 30-year-old geeking out about gaming while his 40-year-old parents roll their eyes.

Bless.

Ah, "old soul". Yes, heard that a lot. Growing up, I was always "wise beyond my years" or an "old soul".

Old soul doesn't bother me. Actually feels right. I mean, even as a kid/teenager, I was listening to swing and big bands of the 30's and 40's. Imagine my delight playing Fallout 3 for the first time and turning on Galaxy News Radio. Ah! Bliss!
