I'm so old that, as a kid, if I wanted to play a video game, I would have to play a cassette tape (anyone remember those?) to my computer for 10 actual minutes before I even saw the title screen.

I remember those.  In fact, I distinctly remember an adventure game which would reset itself in the spectrum if you lost; which meant having to reload from cassette again  (imagine if that happened with each failed extraction in DA:I).

The C64 had cooler loading screens though; I remember loading a game just to listen to the chip tune.

Remember when Nintendo was relevant?

Whudda mean broham? Nintendo still is relevant. I raised my kids on the 8-bit gaming system. They still at times preferred it over Xbox and Sony systems when we had family gaming days. When I have grandkids they'll probably love it as much as we did. Here's my collection that I still have. I had at one point about 45 games but it's been narrowed down (due to theft, trading or loss over the years) but I still have the ones that matter. Have a look:

Too true. I sacrifice sleep for DAIMP. I keep falling asleep in the single player at night and I wake up and find my character is knee deep in a bog, surrounded by skeletons, or I have been humping a wall for five minutes..

I will get loads of free time in September when my youngest starts full time school and my fiancee starts her job. It would definitely be great to start writing again.

If I'm falling asleep, I don't even try to play DAIMP, especially not MP. I lose my temper very quickly if I'm tired (read: I throw controllers and yell a lot at stupid little things).

More than happy to help if you want some criticism (Graduating with a B.A. in English in May, Writing Consultant at Uni, Content Writer for a marketing company, and copy editor for a small - miniscule by most standards - press).

What all do you like to write? Screenplays/fiction/nonfiction/poetry/other? Genre?

Edit: OP, you may as well make this a General Discussion thread.

Did BioWare outsource the dog AI to you, by any chance?

This thread makes me feel both old, and young. +1 OP.

My 1st year of comp systems for my Fortran and programming course we had to use these.

punch_card.75dpi.rgb.gif

Actually we only filled in coding sheets and some woman did all the key punching.  We were given a total of 5 runs from each project.  no wonder I did not make programming my eventual career.

Close, I'm 50.

My daughters despair that I run around killing demons and dragons (usually as female characters) in my spare time.

(But why should the youngsters have all the fun.

Computer games weren't this good didn't exist when I was 15...)

My whole family are gamers. Dad's 48, mom's 40. Couldn't ask for cooler parents.  :) We're all playing Final Fantasy Type 0 and even though i hate to admit it they are way better than me haha!

Would you sell me your parents? Not only the gaming but I'm nearly as old as your mother so I could hang out with them when not gaming.

Kidding of course, but it's way cool to have gamer parents. I'm on a different boat though, trying to raise a gamer girl as my gaming buddy. And while my wife can deny me the right to buy a PS4 she doesn't have the heart to deny it from our little one.

Very nice, I don't have my NES any more (didn't have many games for it anyways) but I do have all my SNES games which was when I really got into video games. I loved all the old RPGs, both Breath of Fire games, the FF games, Mario RPG, Zelda. I had to buy some new device to play them though as many years ago I was drunk and stepped on my SNES, worked sporcadially for a bit until it kicked the bucket.

Oh the amount of board games, radio controlled cars and copters, gaming devices and water jet guns I've bought with that excuse. Even though she's a girl she can play all the boys's games. :)

Well played, sir. Well played. I played a different card. It's a part of "job requirement" to keep my skills sharp (staying on the cutting edge of tech). Don't laugh. She believed it.

I had an ace in the hole though: My house, my rules. You knew the type of man you were dealing with when you first saw my entertainment center.

Good on you!

Speaking as a lifelong tomboy myself, I immensely appreciated that my parents supported my love of "boy's toys" and didn't try to force me or "correct" me onto a more "girl-suited" path or whatever.

That would've led to some ugly fights and even uglier rebellion, I've no doubt. Instead, I grew up very happy and self-confident and my parents were the people I respected the most as role models. :)

I'm in the market for an upgrade for mywife. Well specifically an exact clone of my current wife with an added subroutine for gaming. Since right now I have to hide in the basement to game. At least I have a 50" LED TV down there.

In case you're reading this honey, I LOVE YOU!

I've always denied disclosing my age after my mid 20's but here I can see that I am younger than many, maybe than most. At first I thought this thread was a joke, but now I kinda like it.

We all like to gather around the campfire and share stories only we can relate to amongst ourselves. Especially since almost all other video game communities are filled with incredibly mean, self-conscious, vitriol-spewing children. I turned on my mic to play Call of Duty MP once and would have been scarred for life. Except I used to be one of those kids.

I for one am really enjoying this community and this thread in particular. It's nice socializing with people in my demographic age group. Which incidentally I found out goes from 18-29 to 30-50. Lol. Seeing people in their 60s and 70s playing this game also gives me a lot of hope. I sure as hell want a future where I'm still gaming my balls off at that age.

Full disclosure: I played a Korean mmo for 4 years. The average age was 14-16. I was 26. Never gonna have to learn that lesson again.

I have child hood trauma from my dad and uncle because at Christmas the presents would be opened and they would promptly start assembling, making and playing with my presents. Daaaaaaaaaad!!!!!!

A good friend of mine (we've been friend since we met at elementary school), just got his Nintendo working again.

He's all pumped, we're booking a day off work to play Contra, Super Mario Bros and Nobunga's Ambition (best Nintendo game ever)

As he also started playing Mass Effect but really sucks at it, I'm going to help him with that too!

Throw 30 beers into the equation and it should be one awesome day (and I'll probably be ready for bedtime by 7)
