Max out approval ratings and locked approval?

I no longer seem to be getting approval for certain characters (Varric, Blackwall) when I do their collection quests. Is it because I've maximized their approval? If so, will it stay 'locked' at max like in DA2 and I don't have to worry about pissing them off again?

I have the same question regarding romance. Once started, is it locked in unless the inquistor breaks it off? Or can I lose the romance if I keep getting disapproval?

Thanks.

I can't answer the romance one, as I've never lost enough approval during a romance, however due to the way the mechanics work (once you're truly locked into one, that's it for that playthrough), I assume once you're locked in, you're locked in.

There is a max cap on approval (relatively easy to hit with Cass/Varric/Solas/anyone with a collection quest), however we're, or at least I'm, not sure if it can actually go down from there. The disapproval shows up, but approval never does. That said, it didn't seem to make a difference (once you're capped you're likely so far into the quest chains/story that it doesn't matter at this point).

If approval is already maxxed out, is there any story-line effect/cut-scenes for completing the collection quests?

Not that I've ever seen. Approval affects very little until you get really high, or really low, in which case people's welcome/goodbye greeting will be different. In some cases you're given the option to call them out/kick them out. That said, it doesn't really affect anything else other than the ability to romance a character (not sure on the non-partymembers' romance mechanics as they don't have approval, I've only romanced two people), and when their personal quest trigger (for some characters).

It doesn't lock in, no. The companions will still object when you do things they don't like (which makes sense, really).

I didn't like the DA2 system at all. Too gamey.

The issue is, once they cap, they go down but not up. Once you hit the cap you can't gain approval anymore, just lose it. It may actually lock in, the values are hidden so I can't be sure, but what I am sure of is, there's a point where you can only lose approval. It's usually too far into the game to matter, but with DLC, and possible approval/disapproval options, it could end up being an issue.

For example, once Solas' approval is capped, he won't gain anymore approval when activating artifacts, or asking questions. He will however still lose approval if he disagrees. Even after that approval goes down, activating artifacts, or asking questions will still not raise it. In the main game that's not big deal, to max it out you're likely near the end, but with 4 DLCs, there could be a point where it just keeps dropping, with no way to bring it back up, and you're stuck with a guy that hates you. Now, if that can affect romances, that could end up being an even bigger issue for some who can't even lock those in due to approval only dropping.

For the record, I really liked DA2's implementation, because it was based primarily on choices, swung both ways, and was worked into their personal skill trees (all elements I enjoyed).

Yeah, I liked the DA II approval system as well. Hope bioware patch the issue mentioned by NextGenCowboy above.
