In my first playthrough, Scattered in Skyhold was available immediately after I'd completed the initial quests.  I didn't have any upgrades yet, even the garden, and found copies before I even met the quest giver.  I didn't know there was one until I read about it.  Now I've banished Cory 4 times and the librarian's stuck on waiting for a reply to her second wartable operation.  I think that might be what's preventing Varric's side quest from firing, because I always do his personal quests and upgrade the tower.  Either that, or the stack of books in Vivienne's area was messing up the KE writings or personal quest.  I think they used the same books, and I wasn't running a mage, so I don't know if her writings were available or not.  Cole's writings were available to an assassin, but I'd looted the chest before I ever reached the wartable mission, so I don't know if there would be a conflict.

 

Any suggestions?  It was a fun quest.

This quest requires the enhanced studies perk (the one that gives you bonus XP for creature research).

The NPC researcher doesn't show up until you have it.

Thanks!  I've been piling on so much XP getting lost and having to kill the same monsters over and over I figured I was already spending perk points through combat and other things.  Now time to go cash in a few favors so I can have fun playing scavenger.
