Okay Bioware...even I'm disappointed in this DLC.

Hi, yeah, you might know me Bioware. I'm one of the people who defends you to the masses here on the BSN. I'm one of the few who doesn't even hate EA (I used to work for them so ya know...a little biased there.) I loved inquisition and though of course I found a few small flaws with it, I still thought it was an amazing game.

So I was shocked and pleased when I saw that the first DLC had already been released. I grabbed it immediately and settled in to play.

You know what I think now? It was supposed to be in the main game, cut for time, and you repackaged it as DLC and released it in a hurry because people were getting suspicious over the lack of DLC this long after release.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't HATE it and I'll be playing it again on other characters, it just didn't feel worth the money and certainly didn't feel like much effort was put into it.

I'm disappointed. Seriously disappointed.

The Good

-The avaar lore was interesting. It's something I've been curious about since DA:O so it was awesome to see it in action and learn more.

-The scenery was gorgeous. That's pretty common in inquisition but it needed to be said so there was at least one other good.

-YAY new Mats!

The bad

-Pretty good concept but it felt insignificant. Why would the inquisitor herself go all the way out there to find the last inquisitor? What is there to gain? Loot would have rotted away and while the idea of learning about him is noble it's something that could have easily been a war table mission. There was no real incentive for her to be there.

-Generic quest giver sends you on a nonsensical quest and you just jump up and say "ho there..okay!" It's one of the things I hated most about inquisition. Early game, sure...but later in the game does it really make sense for the inquisitor herself to be out there fetching everything anyone could need and doing things a common soldier could? Shouldn't she be focused on the things only she can do?

-Endless fetch quests with no real tie to the story and no emotional significance. Bioware, this isn't skyrim. I know you want it to be but it's not. Please stop selling yourselves short. Bioware excels at STORY. That's what makes your games great and that's why I play them. I love the story and the way it engulfs you so completely as you play. I understand a small amount of these quests but a WHOLE DLC of them? Really? The lack of cinematic conversations just makes this disconnect worse. It absolutely feels...shallow. It deters me from caring about these minor characters the way I did in other Bioware games. Please stop burying your gorgeous tale in mindless bullcrap to fill hours.

The Awful.

-No new companion content aside from some small interjections? Really?

-No new ties to the main story if you haven't yet completed it and only very small mentions if you have.

-The entire thing just felt like busy work. Like you were saying "Here, take this bundle of fetch quests and shut up. DLC, We did it, see! DA:I isn't a flop!"

So yeah...I'm more than a little disappointed. I miss immersive DLC full of meaningful content and character interaction. That's what I was expecting.

I got mini-Skyrim with prettier graphics and better voice acting.

Completely unrelated but annoying note

I'm still plagued with the repeating banter bug. I finished the DLC post campaign and yet at least 3 times running around Dorian and Varric were talking about the odds of us beating Corypheus. "Uh guys...we already did...are you feeling okay?"

What??  Judging from what I witnessed in the trailer, this dlc is the second coming.  Don't tell me we are the victims of even more Bioware BS?

I wouldn't say BS but it's certainly not my thing. I like skyrim and all but when I play a bioware game it's for the story, not mindless running around.

If you were to rank the contents of all the regions in the game, where would you place the one from the DLC?

Jason Marsden is great too but when every single young male character is voiced by him it gets tiring. Yes, there were a few good voice actors but for the majority of the game it was 7-8 distinct voices, over and over and over and over and over.

Emerald wastes. There was more interesting lore than the hinterlands but not as much as other areas.

This is one aspect of DLC where the developers can't win no matter what they choose to do. Had they gone the other way and produced a DLC storyline with numerous ties to the main story, there would have been fans complaining that the content should have been included in the main game.

I have a feeling we won't be getting any more story DLC at all now that Gaider is gone.   At least, not involving any characters that were written by him.

I think the DLC would have been received well if the quest were designed to come after the last battle. For example, searching out one of the remaining old gods.

Another option is open up Aeonar. It could have remained closed off the entire time, only emerging as a player on the world stage once the big bad was defeated. There are plenty of bad mages there to make for an interesting game. Plus, there are tons of characters who could return for it. Teyrn Fergus, if you place Aeonar close to Highever (which it allegedly is). The Ferelden monarch(s), as they would clearly want to crush any problem there before it grew out of control. Lily, who was sent there back in Origins. Possibly Jowan, if he survived. Irving maybe? Finn, possibly. This would lead to some discussion about the Hero.

This would give us a chance to see Highever (the city), and work with Ferelden nobles to defuse a lit powder keg that threatens to be another Kirkwall.

Well, good thing I'm not missing anything then since I had to roll back the frickin patch to play with mods. -_- I'm assuming you need the patch to play the DLC so I haven't bought it.

I'm actually playing Origins right now. I'll wait until if and when mods work again to pick up Inquisition.

I bet they'll add at least one more DLC that ties the game off properly, or at least I hope so. I'd like to here more about Solas or the Taint. There's also the Black Emporium. We'll see I guess.

Yep it doesn't sound like I will be getting it when it comes to PS3. I already have tons of Skyrim-like areas in DAI, I don't need more. What I want is story content and character-content, but those seem to be minimal with this DLC so not my thing.

Your review sounds exactly like the vibe I was getting from all the people talking about the dlc.  Microsoft can keep that dlc as far as I care at this time.  It sounds like a pass for me even when it does make it to PS4.  Here's hoping the next dlc is better and comes out on all systems.

The entire situation about DA:I reminds me of this scene from DA:O:

Revision! Who does Morrigan represent? Who does Barkspawn stand for? And what is the "putrid, half-eaten hare"? ;)

In this case, it would be a mix of that with further complaints about it not being available for everyone and that it'll probably be spoiled before they get their hands on it.

Max von Sydow was Esbern? I didn't know that.
I don't think good VA needs Oscar winners, but such names popping up will hopefully make people realize video games aren't things in the basement which have to do with amok running, but "serious" entertainment business.

I actually really enjoyed the DLC.  I read everything, found some "hidden" unmarked content, and completed everything, continuing from my 100% Nightmare play-through and doing the same with this DLC.

Not to mention the new zone, is quite awesome.  It looks GREAT and has am much different feel from the other zones which is a major plus imo given it means they put more work & creativity into it.  The lore was good, the fights were great... if you find a certain treasure stash you can do something that spawns LVL 30 enemies haha....it felt nice to whoop them on Nightmare.   The last section was also very unique in mechanics and ultimately I like the direction they are heading in with DA:I DLC.

Not to mention, I got two new agents, although I was hoping one of them in particular could join my party.. but still an awesome part nonetheless.

Thanks OP.

I can't see me buying it.. the original game didn't sit right for me at all, and as i've said before its refreshing to see people who defend a game willing to sit on both sides of the fence, If something isn't right.

Again thanks for the candid view.

In all fairness, people aren't victim of anything untill they buy the dlc.

I didn't find it completely terrible personally. But it certainly wasn't great either. 4 out of 10.

Namea to escape the "feeling" that only a small group is voice acting a change is needed in the game engine to evolve speech and personality for each character in the game with inflection, plot awareness, etc.  That certainly is possible today, but who will address it properly?

There is a point where voice acting with all the pointers and databases becomes too cumbersome and then a change to automated character voices that will use only small samples to cover wide ranges of "virtual speech acting"  - I thought we were already at this point, optimism I Guess.

To have a mod or patch that would modify 90% of the voices in skyrim would be a lot of work. More than Bethesda or any modder would want to put in. It's sad but true. Not to mention if it was done by modders we'd get some great voices and then a bunch of amateurs that sound ridiculous.
