I dunno if I'd call Bianca a Mary Sue (A Mary Sue would be devoid of flaws. Her flaw is that she didn't care what Varric told her and thought she could fix things, that she knew better then him, and that she fucked up big time).

Under-utilized, to be sure. Somewhat contradictory in that we found out Gerav was responsible for making Bianca, IIRC. But a Mary Sue? Nah. That's a term far too often bandied about.

Wouldn't be BSN without overusing terms :P

But then she did the Sue thing where she totally got away with everything because she's too cool for consequences. Varric still loves her, the Merchants guild still loves her, Orzammar still wants to make her a Paragon and the Inquisitor was happy to act as her errand boy.

She might not be 100 % Sue, but at the very least she's got some Sue traits.

The only thing I disliked about the Bianca quest was being unable to reply to her feeding me my eyeballs comment. It's this "My NPC is cooler than you and gets to have the last word" kind of writing... that way lies Kai Leng.

I don't feel like hitting her or let alone murder her for that line, but something about my eyes being on top shelf height seemed to be in order at that moment.

I was quietly muttering "yeah? If you can reach!" To myself at that point  I'm 5'2" in RL so I'd have liked to have made -some- use out of my qunari's tallness. Or any kind of comeback would have done, really. I'm not a fan of other people getting the last word under most circumstances but especially not when they've just screwed up royally.

I think Bianca should have been a squadmate in DA:I instead of Varric. Varric should have been limited to a buddy cameo with his bro (or sis) Hawke.

In Mass Effect 2 & 3 you are given the opportunity to punch reporter Khalisah al-Jilani.

Actually in the first game as well.

Yup you can beat her up the entire trilogy.

On the BSN it often gets used as shorthand for "character I don't like" or "waifu that got more screentime than my waifu."

Don't be such a Mary Sue about it, Han.

Bianca definitely isn't a Mary Sue; sure she's presented as a master of everything, but she's hardly relevant. And Fiona was demoted to idiot. Leliana was obviously too powerful for them both.

I don't use the term outside of referencing its use, at least not for canon characters. They have to be a author insert character in a fan fiction with an excessive influence on people and events for me to play that card.

I still don't enjoy Bianca's role and dialogue in the story at all, but I wouldn't call her a Sue.

If you think about it she's a borderline Sue.

You don't have to use the term if you don't care to, but there's also no reason to be pedantic about its definition or sniff about other people using it as long as they offer some justification. We all know the textbook definition and don't have to use it.

Yeah, I understand why other people would call her that. Ynqve's given some pretty good reasons for doing so, for example.

I think she's indifferent to me. I was always curious if we'll get a chance to meet The REAL Bianca and here we go. Not what I expected, but damn... Laura Bailey's voice! I can't hate character with that VA!

I was the same way with Kai Leng in Mass Effect 3. People were hating on him and I couldn't because he is voiced by Troy Baker.

Thanks. I usually avoid using the term since I agree that people usually use it as a go to insult for characters that they dislike, even when it's uncalled for. And I still wouldn't call Bianca a pure Mary Sue. Her appearance is thankfully too brief to make her one.

Bianca is one of those situations where they should've did more and do less at the same time

I just don't understand why they brought her in at all. They had a great opportunity to leave her out of both the comics and the game which would leave us always with that wonderful mystery of who really stole Varric's heart. Not everything that is mentioned needs to be revealed in game. Some things can remain unanswered and forever illusive. Bianca was a perfect example of this. She's much more appealing as a great unknown love of Varric's than she could ever be when given life. The Bianca we were presented with is proof of this fact.

They obviously needed to make her a Dwarven mechanical genius, seeing as though no-one else seems to be able to figure out a reloading crossbow at that time. Then they must have thought that for Varric to hold such love for her, she would need to be several levels above him in most regards. Smarter. Wittier. More confident. A better shot. Revered by her peers etc. Then they needed to create conflict between these star-crossed lovers. Cause you know, big hole in the sky, everyone is going to die just isn't enough for one Dwarf. Altogether, we're just left with an unsatisfying story based mission and an underwhelming character reveal.

Thankfully, indeed.

That's a really good point. They wrote her as miss pure and unfiltered perfect because they thought she needed to be after the build up. So instead of getting a relatable person, we get a Dwarven goddess of genius, charm, and talent with unsympathetic dialogue.
