I didn't warm to her as a character, Better archer than Varric! Better smith than Branka! And something else I can't remember right now! She's cheating on her husband, then you find out she's the reason Cory got his hands on red lyrium which imo deserves more than a bit of a scolding.

You can arrest the Emprise du Lion mayor, Servis,  Alexius/Florianne if they survive their quest and you can even judge Samson/Calpernia but because Bianca is Varric's LI the most you can do is tell her she messed up.

Her threat seemed weird and badly timed but it didn't bother me.

No, because Laura Bailey.

The merit of the character should not be judged by VA alone.

Yes, you're not alone on this, but I'm afraid we're the minority here, OP.

I'm not a big fan of her. In fact, I dislike her a lot because she's very rude to someone she just met and hasn't done anything wrong to her. I dislike her even more because she threaten the only person who can offer Varric's protection, who's been taking care of Varric all along, I suppose this depends on how you treat Varric, but my Inquisitor is taking care of his own people.

More importantly, she is the reason Corypheus got the red lyrium, the reason things gone to sh*t. I can respect how she is trying to fix her problem, but sealing the entrance is not enough, it's half assed method of solving the problem as she's just pretending the problem doesn't exist when she cannot see one. As Ynqve has pointed out, one more reason I dislike Bianca is that because she's got a Mary Sue traits, how she's untouchable and too darn awesome to be judged.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to throw hate on Bianca simply because of that one line, which is a shame because until then she's an awesome character who is thoroughly enjoyable to watch? I think that was just a bad line in how it was written and presented, which spoiled the scene for everyone?

I don't think it's just that line. It's also that she knows everything better, does everything better than Varric or anyone else, and is just generally underwhelming for Ms. Crossbow. I don't hate her, but I find the whole quest kind of dull and underwhelming. I guess it goes to show that love is blind.

For me, part of my disdain for Bianca comes from the fact her engineering skills are a bit overhyped. I mean, she has apparently designed something so incredible, so revolutionary, that there's talk of her being made a surfacer Paragon, in direct defiance to the caste system and centuries of dwarven tradition... and we never find out what that is. Show, don't tell, Bioware. When did you forget that?

Don't forget how she's also a better marksman than Varric!

That's when I started cringing. We get it  Bioware, she's super cool and awesome. But she's acting like a moron with no social skills.

I did not mind her but her final comment made me wish I had the option of a response at least. Nice response to just say ok or something like that, funny response to give a funny comeback, and aggressive response to send her into the fade if she tries. Varric was my inquisitor closest companion since the start of the game like my right hand man so seeing the type of relationship he had with Biance it rubbed me the wrong way.

Absolutely. They really tried too hard to make us like her, instead of letting things flow naturally, and nothing spurs greater resentment than the notion that you must like a specific character. Her status as this uber sniper/engineer/Varric's perfect love interest never feels earned (then again, "never feels earned" is a statement that could apply to much of Inquisition in general, but that's a rant for another time).

Unfortunately, this problem is epidemic in Inquisition. Lots of characters who supposedly have certain qualities that the narrative utterly fails to back up.

I don't think she's overly-favoured as much as the writer's forgot that their own familiarity with her character was not something that the audience has, or thought since we've known of their relationship since DA2, we'd be comfortable enough with her character for that kind of line to seem natural?

Finding the right balance for any character and the right kind of voice can be a challenge and I think that's probably what happened, that they slightly fumbled her at the end? Although you have to give them some major props, as it was only really noticable because of how amazingly she was written before that? If she'd been so-so, we'd probably not be fixating on that awful last line of hers so much?

It's a fair analyses, and probably very accurate. Though I don't necessarily think she was amazingly written before that line, really. I actually think the writers were resting on the characters laurels a bit, and informing us of her talent, intelligence, and general awesomeness a bit more than they were showing us those characteristics. Sometimes shilling a character has it's place. For example, we're informed of Loghain's exemplary competence as a tactician in DAO, and that comes off as useful information that we should be told. This time though, it was a little...clunky?

Still, I'll try to be cautious of making too much out of one line of dialogue.  :)

Personally at first I felt a little miffed when she threatened my Inquisitor, but eventually I realized it just shows how much she cares for Varric. She's willing to take on a psuedo-god (I was overpowered by the time I met Bianca.) If I let anything bad happen to Varric!

A very fair point. I might just be a happier gamer if I follow your lead and think about it that way.  :P

She's probably not, Varric's just flattering her because he really wants to get laid before she leaves Skyhold and goes back to her husband, since he realises he's likely not going to see her for another decade?

Yup. I wish they had just shut up about how much of a special snowflake she is. I don't get why they felt the need to go to such lengths to prove how brilliant she is. I would have been fine with her if she was "just" a talented engineer with a nice personality. I'll pick bland over annoying every time.

Well said, Ginny didn't need to be a special snowflake, she was already playing the redhead card and the forbidden fruit angle as the sister of a best mate, it was pretty much a winning hand right there? Her being awesome at everything was pointless?

(Although my headcanon is that she totally was sleeping with Neville during HP7... especially in the movie version. Oh sure, Neville claims he's seeing Luna in the film, but he's always with Ginny in most scenes and that's pretty much what you would say to throw him off the trail. Plus Neville's way more of a boss in that movie than Harry.)

I think they worked too hard to make Bianca likeable, which ended up putting some of us off her, weirdly enough?

I didn't hate her, but she didn't seem all that impressive to me.  I certainly didn't see any reason for Varric to put his life on hold for over 10-15 years....

Oh, and I didn't like what they revealed about her connection to Red Lyrium, but it's DA, so I'm not really surprised at that kind of behavior... that said, it wasn't enough to make me care about the character one way or the other.

Okay... after reading that and being reminded of the events of the game, I actually am starting to dislike the character a bit more... lol... good analysis.

Exactly. Sometimes, when it comes to presenting a character in a favourable light, less is more.

And of course Neville's way more of a boss than Harry in the movies. He's way more of a boss than Harry in any context, because he's Neville Longbottom, and he's one bad mothaf-- well, you get the idea :)

As if we don't have enough of them in the DA universe already. Clearly, those Mary Sue characters are so lovable, and everyone love them.   <_<

At this rate, Syndrome is going to be our next protagonist and attempt to kill all the Mary-Sue level heroes, then sell enchanted gear to make all the regular folk have a turn being special? Wait a second... that's Sandal's entire plan, isn't it? Sandal is Syndrome!

I barely remember Bianca, but I think she was more interesting in the rumors about her before the game launched (where she was an abomination who would have gotten Varric possessed if he had kept the red lyrium shard).

I actually forgot about that part. God, they tried to make her so cool and awesome yet it fell flat because she's just does next to nothing useful when we see her. Doesn't help her dialogues were cringy.

I actually wish Branka came back from the dead to fight her after she started acting like she's so much better than an actual Paragon.

Speaking of how hard BioWare tried to make Bianca so cool and special.

A surfacer smith, I can't be the only one who thinks it's Bianca. Did they seriously try to make her even more special by having the Assembly consider making her a paragon. By the Ancestors!
