We shall see, but I doubt. I feel no love for shotguns in general. Too heavy, too low on damage. I suspect I'll just arm my Cabal with Reegar and it'll be better than Raider in every way.

 

Yep. You're just like me. No love for shotguns back then and still not that crazy for them... but some exception do exist. Raider is one of them. But sadly I don't use it anymore like I used to because it's so OP.

 

And well, yeah, of course. It's lol Reegar. But Raider is the second highest dps beast in the game that sometimes comes with extra shots to help it catch up to Reegar a bit. And Raider has style, while Reegar doesn't. Raider also won't run out of ammo as fast as Reegar (why on the Jug I favoured Raider over Reegar). But cancel Reload is a must to maximize Raider fun.

Well. I have used the Raider on the Cabal in the past, and while it's good, it's not overly so, I'll agree.

I wouldn't dare speak for Deerber, but as I know you like the Lancer, have you tried it?  It seems slightly counter-intuitive, as you'll still have to go to ammo crates for your Nightshade Blades, but it is very effective.

 

I also think you might benefit from learning to dodge backwards immediately after Poison Strike, rather than turn around and shoot.  There are situations when doing so might be risky, but the majority of the time it speeds up your damage massively.  Works like a charm with the Raider.

Lancer is a decent rifle, but don't I need burst damage (shotgun) rather than damage over time (assault rifle) in this scenario?

I'm chuckling to myself because I was fully expecting you to say that, because it's you. 

 

So you're using two powers with cooldowns, what are you gonna do when you can't use either of them?  You don't want to use a Shotgun to blast your way out of trouble, and you don't have Blades on a panic button. So you'll probably end up teleporting through a wall into a Banshee or some such other clusterf*ck.  (Edit: I misread slightly, and now see that you do want to use a shotgun, which at least is wise.)

 

My advice regarding the Cabal is always tied to whether you host or not.  If you don't host, Poison Strike is frankly the biggest waste of points in the game.  Even if you do host, there are many arguments for never putting more than 4 ranks in it. There are arguments for completely skipping either it or Biotic Focus.  I run a full melee Raider-wielding Cabal off-host, with Shocktrooper gear and Adrenaline, and she's so good even without PS that it genuinely saddens me when I finish her Challenges and I know I won't be playing her again for a while.  But you would dismiss that setup as 'meh', I believe.

 

Why not just try the Lancer and see how you get on, instead of getting hung up on aspects of the technical side of the game which you probably haven't quite grasped as well in practice as you have in theory?

That, and Cabal's ability layout doesn't leave me much choice. I want max Strike, max Biotic Focus and max Fitness. Makes sense to take max passive as well and skip the blades altogether.

I've tried blades. Used to have rank 6 blades when I was using an Cabal like a soldier - assault rifle and no poison strike. Ended up never using them because they didn't do anything meaningful. Their damage is high on paper, but they just weren't doing anything in practice. So no tears shed.

One power, really. BF is so long I rarely have to trigger it, even though I don't take the duration evolution.
 Yeah, I'm gonna teleport-dodge somewhere. Somewhere into the open area rather than through a wall, if I can help it.

That's kinda why I thought you should just try it, because it might challenge your preconceptions.  There are no mooks which can't be dispatched at close quarters by a Cabal with Blades and either PS or BF using a Lancer.  It just works, and there are so many options to the build that I really couldn't pick a favourite.  Maybe something like this (sorry it's a Lancer X), bearing in mind that I would normally spec PS using 6b, and doing the backward dodge thing I mentioned, but for learning the range might actually suit you better -

As I said though, hosting is hugely significant.  If you don't host, once you've got the hang of her and want to try a melee build, this is what I use mostly -

She is really fast and really fun, and really versatile, so I hope you get something from either of those as options.

With my cabal, I skipped passives entirely and went all out on melee and the powers... I still am getting used to this character though.... I make full use of poison strike's range to set up melee to hit enemies that can only be seen with geth scanner from a distance...

This may not be the best way to spec the Cabal but it sure is a helluva lot of fun... seriously host-dependent though.

Nightshade Blades are another of the games almost OP skills, entirely only held back by the capacity, there are many ways to build the Cabal, but skipping Blades because they don't do anything is not one. Seriously you can fire off two Blades into a whole boss spawn of Brutes, Ravagers and whatever else is nearby and it'll all be dead before you'd be waiting for a cooldown on Poison Strike.

 

Posion Strike is fun, but really flakey off host, I always have it, because I like it, but it's never going to be discussed as one of the greatest skills in the game. Biotic Focus is pretty nifty, makes you very survivable and more damaging, what's not to like. Skipping Blades because you want to max the rest is odd, but if it's fun for you go for it, however you're definitely losing her most damaging skill.

 

Actually I can't think of one good reason to skip Blades but I can think of several builds that may skip one of the other two skills.

The most overpowered weapon class in raw DPS is low on damage? I salute you sir/ma'am.

I think it's more like speccing out of Overload on a TGI or Cluster Nades on Drellguard. It'll still work, even on Platinum, but it is definitely unusual.

Why max fitness? She can get over 1000 shields without maxing fitness and then you have points left over to put into something offensive. Like NBs.

Because, she will be out of breath far too quickly with low Fitness. She can't keep up with them fast kits anymore. You'd think that is obvious.

Especially, when a teammate wants to use a nuke. That's one great way to get on people's nerves.
