Edit: I've mentioned this in my latest reply, but it sounds like I'm having an issue with Windows 8.1 and the memory page file. I was getting alerts from my browser, Photoshop, etc after the DAO issue. I now have edited my Group Policy settings for the page file, so that it clears every time I shut down. I started Dragon age with Firefox open and no problems so far. I haven't had memory alerts while on a fresh reboot. If I find a permanent solution, I'll bump this topic and share my finding. But at least now I know it isn't a memory leak issue, though I have patched it for over 2gig anyway.

Sadly I can't find a permanent fix for the grey box issue. That still is a problem, and it's extended to alternating with the 2nd map that needs to be displayed. It has nothing to do with local area, world area, or travelling within Denerim. It seems to be the 2nd map when hitting the map icon.

After the Origin client prompted me to update, I made an attempt to start the game, which lead me to CTD. It sounds like it goes over the memory limit when it tries to load the game, a problem I haven't had with this at all. Not only do I have well over what's needed, I even have an external HD to use as virtual memory. So, I decided to use a patcher that many have said worked with DAO. It works like a charm, but now my city map refuses to show up, as you can see below.

It looks as if the image that would typically overlay onto the faux parchment texture refuses to load, hence the grey square in the upper left of the book. I feel like there should be an easy fix for this, but I wouldn't know what to do. Do I need to copy a file over? Or am I forced to reinstall the game for a fresh start?

Actually, I figured out a work around. First of all, I did redownload the game. I felt like I wanted to refresh some mods, since I had a couple that weren't properly activating. This was initially only happening in camp. I loaded an earlier save and tried things out. That worked just fine. If I "tab out" of the game, I do see the alert from Windows telling me to close DA: O, but if I leave it alone I can play the game just fine. It's just a minor annoyance I have to deal with. I have no idea what started the issue to begin with.

You don't need the Origin client to run the older BioWare games, you only need it running for Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

My DAO was "purchased" through Origin (it was free). Anyone who has it through Origin knows that there's some stupid issue with trying to play it offline. I looked into it myself. Eventually I'm going to purchase it on Steam whenever the Ultimate version goes on sale.

I've found out my issue wasn't with Origin or DAO at all. My new desktop runs Windows 8.1. It wasn't until today that I've had Firefox giving the Low Memory alert. It makes no sense because I have plenty of RAM to go around. After hours of digging, I found out that editing the page file in GPEdit helps out. I may have to restart every day, but I'm fine with that; I turn it off every night anyway. I'm still going to keep researching for a permanent fix, but sadly this has been an issue for many 8.1 users for far too long.
