Quite literally the word, "vitriol." I've noticed that it's getting to a point that people can't come up with a better description for, "saying angry stuff..."

Has the internet become incestuous with its usage of this word? We need to filter out this vernacular clog.

Awwww but I like it.

That and "Vexed" are like my favorite words. Right behind "Food" and "What?"

It sounds intelligent, so some people might use it to try and appear more sophisticated.

Or they use it correctly, albeit those are usually a minority.

Had to look that one up ... and would say it's pretty stupid to make up a word out of composites that makes no sense and the arbitrarily define it as meaning "of little worth / unimportant" because the different components aren't in high regard. Don't know how many Romans turn around in their graves whenever someone does this to their language.

If so you'd have to reeducate a significant portion of people. because terms like "acidic", "toxic", "belligerent" are likewise in frequent use despite technically not being applicable if one went with the correct definition.

Now, what exactly is the reason for your annoyance with the term? Is it using the term itself for anything that doesn't involve discussing sulfates, or is people using the term too often to the point of excluding others?
