And that problem is not working hard enough to get the goal they look for. It is assumed that fans will embrace anything they want just 'because it's Dragon Age', 'because it's Bioware'. And it partially works because the first instalments in all BW universes were great. No, I'm lying, they were ****** EPIC!

If you need to sell something you need to make it look pretty, work smoothly and sound like a charm. Each and every of three points here requires a lot of effort. And then... Then you need to show that you actually care about what you sell.

Step 1. Take an outside contract with a composer to write some epic music for your DLC.

Step 2. Start a co-working themed event with that composer, throw off a party or several with Orlesian dress-codes or something. Make people talk about your your DLC BEFORE you intend to sell it.

Step 3. Price your DLC accordingly to the effort you've put into it. Not that insane 30 USD price tag.

Step 4. Reap benefits.

And if you do everything right - you will get a lot of attention from all kinds of people. Even the ones that never played Dragon Age before. They will beg you to make more PR actions to popularize the DLC. I say it again in the vague hope you can read this - people will ask you to make more advertisement PR events for your DLC.

Some say - that can't be that easy. That won't work.

Okay, a little story then about me and the League of Legends.

I've never played MOBA game before. At all. No DotA, no Tower Defence games, nothing. I did barely know that those games even exist, you know, on the 'again those DotA jokes on my 9gag' level.

Then I've got a youtube recommendation for watching a video. This video.

Checking the channel I've got the name of the game. I've learned that Riot Games 've thrown parties around the world to celebrate the goddamn hero skin release! Even in the wilds. This is the effort to make people love your content I feel obliged to support.

So I paid 20 USD before even knowing what this game actually is. Just as a badge of respect to them Riot Games guys.

I mean - if that worked for a bloody champion skin...

...it has to work with a properly designed DLC, right?

Bioware isn't that kind of company though. Neither is EA.

They aren't like Blizzard, CCP Games and Riot. In fact most game companies don't do anything like that.

What's wrong in making themed events worldwide?.. Is that prohibited by some Bioware rule or the budgets are cut or...

Seriously?

You're going to compare DA:I and it's PR schemes to a game that is played profesionally by teams with sponsors and has live coverage of games all over the world? Live games that are watched by 30 MILLION people?

My &*()^@#)&*(@^# goodness.

You sound like Dragon Age is some semi-indie franchise.

Well no. But it's not an e-sport like the games you're mentioning. RPGs like DA and games like Dota just don't operate on the same level of recognition.

Trev its likely a clever jest to get us thinking.  Afterall, isn't it eye candy that sold the lot of us?  I still can't get over the cinematic beauty advertised compared to that sold and technically there is no reason for the short fall as some areas demonstrated.

The real question is how did you feel after shelling out $20, still a gag reflex?

$30?

The DLC is half that price last time I checked.

Compared to the likes of DotA and League of Legends?

Hell yes.

You know Riot probably has 1000 times more money to spend on this sort of thing right?

Bioware really doesn't sell a lot of games compared to other companies, and these things don't pay for themselves.

They'd probably sell a lot more if they didn't pump out abysmally low quality stuff these days.

I'm sure Bioware is aware that getting funding is more difficult when your software gets a reputation as nonfunctional.  Addiction and 128 days -cute, but likely close to the truth.  I removed the game and reinstalled it yesterday to see if the DLC was even worth attempting.  Now I have to ask what was really fixed?  Yes my female character worked ok for 15 minutes or so, but the male gets stuck in the initial fade sequence on a fresh install.  Isn't it past time to fix that problem?

It's probably unique to your system though.

Just so I'm sure my reading comprehension isn't broken.... you handed over 20 USD for no better reason than that you liked a marketing strategy?

After seeing how DAI turned out to be and how bioware acted after the launch of DAI, it is not all that surprising. bioware has a habit of shooting itself in the foot when it comes to implementing a great idea/concept.

Bioware and EA regarding Bioware have to weight risk and reward as well as cost and profit.

Would I like to see more extravagance and awesome things from Bioware? Sure. If it was for a product I'd enjoy.

They tried that stuff with Mass Effect 3 and look how that turned out. Not so well.

Anyway, this isn't a "behavior" problem. Thats an odd way of describing what you're going for.

Honestly, I can't believe some of the posts I read in here.

LoL might be an atrocious game for pansies (DotA is the real thing :P :P), but the sheer thought that any RPG whatsoever could possibly compete with games like these is just mind boggling.

You guys obviously have no clue how big these games are.

And even if these games didn't exist, RPGs in general don't do tremendously well compared to other genres. Games like Skyrim and Dragon Age are the exception, not the rule. Unless we're going to count JRPs and MMORPGs. Which I know most of you don't.

Dragon Age: Origins was at the 3 million sales mark, as I recall. Respectable, but still on the low end compared to other AAA releases.
