The Dalish Inquisitor knows enough to scold Solas in elven, and know what his spirit friend says to him. I just really didn't like Morrigan being the expert on the inquisitor's own language and culture. I think it definitely could have been presented better. Like I said it wasn't a huge deal, just kind of weird and annoying.

Pah... she knows nothing of the magnificence that is Bob.

I just watched a video with the convo around the ol' water cooler (Well of Sorrows), and if the Dalish elf Inquisitor thanks Abelas then he'll reply, "Don't thank me yet shemlen". I think "shemlen" is the word they use for humans.

Shemlen means "quick children" and is a reference to humans having a short life span. It pretty clear he doesn't consider modern elves his people and since they have the same lifespan as human him calling them "shemlen" as well makes sense.

Hmm...what you're saying does make sense, but I'm curious as to whether or not that was by design on Bioware's part. Up to this point, I'm not sure we've ever seen an elf refer to another elf as shem/shemlen. I'd forgotten what shemlen meant in context of DA, so I assume I wasn't the only one who forgot/didn't know about that. Seems like a little more clarification wouldn't have hurt. Ah well! Maybe we'll see it get used more in later installments ^_^ definitely makes for an interesting idea, and it makes me curious as to how Solas might view the elf Inquisitor, if even Abelas doesn't view them as the same people.

But "quick children" is a term applied to humans. The term was created specifically for them and it was based on their relatively short lifespans. It was never intended to apply to elves because the elves thought they were immortal, or at least long-living. So even if modern elves have human lifespans the term should not be applied to them regardless of how well it fits their description. The reason is because the term was created to refer to humans specifically. Same case with qunari being applied to non-qunari believers of the Qun. I think Inquisition split this up and gave them their own term as well.

Also, Abelas called Solas elvhen, so that is what he should call the Dalish Inquisitor.

Possibly, Abelas was pretty explicit that he doesn't consider modern elves his people at all (which is Elv'hen literally means in addition to being the name of the race), I kinda got the impression he didn't see much of a difference between them and humans. but it could just be another screw up.  I'm also not sure if he had actually  figured out Solas wasn't a modern elf and I suspect that exchange might have been a sneaky way of Solas telling  Abelas there were a few other ancient elves still hanging around in other places without outing himself but's that's just speculation,
