ME1 Character Run-ins... disappointing?

Am I the only one who has found most of the run-ins I've had with my previous crew to be somewhat disappointing?

With the exception of Ashley, no one seems to react with shock or amazement that the leader they all looked up to for years, who was a loved and admired commander, and who was presumed dead for two years, has resurfaced.  No one asks how the hell I suddenly came back to life, or recovered from floting into space, and burning up in a planet's atmosphere.

And when I ran in to Liara T'Soni, my romantic interest from the first game, she basically just says it's nice to see me, and makes no mention of the fact that her and I were (I assumed?) in a serious relationship.  In fact, I don't recall her making any mention of our relationship at all.

I get the idea that these people have all more or less "moved on" since that day, and that's why I can't simply reunite the old crew in it's entirety, but good God, you'd think they would have slightly stronger reactions to seeing Shepard essentially come back from the dead.

Is it just me?  Am I the only one disappointed with the "meh" reactions from these people who trusted and cared about, and who went to hell and back with you?

I dunno, Liara kissed me when she first met my Shepard.. so I guess that's sort of bringing up past relationship?

I would like to say that I'm having a lot of fun with the game, and overall the experience has been exceptional. I was just looking forward to some genuine shock and amazement... especially when I returned to the Citadel. But even Councilor Anderson just basically says "yeah, I'd heard you were alive"

Is that what that was, when she gets close to you?  It was hard to tell from the rendering.  But even then... zero mention of it afterwards?

"Oh Shepard! *kiss*  Anyway, I need you to hack these terminals for me..."

haha

I bet he'll be in ME3 as well, still looking to get a refund.

Yes, it was pretty underwhelming for me as well...but that has pretty been my impression of the entire game. Interactions with your team members were devoid of any emotional engagement, showing an apparent lack of concern and sentiment. So willing were they to accept my miraculous revival that there was naught a concern about how that came to pass. Within 2 years they had so readily "moved on" with their lives that they apparently could not even make themselves feel concerned for Shephard's emotional (as well as physical) well being. Even Kaiden (my LI) was more upset at me for working with Cerberus, not caring that she was alive and had sacrificed herself to save the rest of the crew on that fateful day. The "email" Kaiden sends after that encounter almost seems like a slap in the face (Paraphrasing: "Hey sorry for venting at you like that, I had moved on but I still remember that "oh so special" night we shared, so good luck with your "suicide" mission and maybe we can "hookup" when you get back"). This almost selfish and ego-centric perspective makes it seem like he was more interested in the "lay" than any semblance of a meaningful relationship.

The only meeting I enjoyed was with Wrex (displaying more joy at the reunion than the others despite his stoic nature). Garrus and Tali ( my Shephard's pseudo little brother and sister) were also lacking, although their (very) limited role as team mates redeemed them somewhat.

Bad writing is what I blame.

I agree. This does seem to be poorly written, especially from a character standpoint. There is very little emotional depth and even worse, they have screwed up Liara (it is obvious that it is a different writer for her because the person who wrote her for this game had no clue about the character). I'm fighting just to keep playing. And that is unthinkable considering I have to fight to stop playing ME1 even on my 20+ playthrough.

I have to agree. The ME1 run-ins were completely disappointing. The only one I liked was Wrex who actually showed some emotion at seeing Shepard again. My LI was Liara and that had to be the poorest excuse of a reunion I've ever seen, one kiss then "go do these jobs for me". No mention of the relationship, how Shepard was doing, hell she even knew about the suicide mission against the collectors and it didn't bother her...

Bioware said they wanted to see how many people would cheat on their LI, well with how poor the ME1 LI were implemented in this I'd say majority will cheat.

Nah. I'll just cheat on Bioware and leave ME3 on the store shelf. I am not impressed with this game at all so far. If it doesn't get better, this will be the worst sequel ever created... screw with the gameplay, screw with the aura that ME1 created, and then completely **** up carry over with LI's, but completely screw up one of those characters. It's like they didn't even pay attention to what they did in the first game.

How the hell can any of these people actually think that last part was a good idea?

Yeah, I just did that and was completely bummed out about how ho-hum he was.  I was also disappointed to not be able to explore the Presidium.  Here's hoping an expansion unlocks that.  I need to go score some goods from Delan and find out what Sha'ira's retirement is all about.

I dunno. I don't find the old character's emotions anymore lackluster than the first game.

I am thoroughly enjoying it (minus a few of the gameplay changes, though, honestly...)

Bioware has done extremely well doing something that hasn't even been attempted before.

I think a lot of fans just put their expectations far too high.

Like I said, I'm personally enjoying the game. That isn't to say it isn't without flaws - but most games aren't.

Anyone else think they could make an entire game about the Krogans? I was sad when I had to leave Tuchanka. Urdnot Clan are hilarious.

Dunno what you guys are smokin lol

Shep's been dead for *2 YEARS*. Please put this into context - its not a month, not several months, but two years. I'd have moved on, regardless of how attractive a leader Shepard was.

You're also not taking into account that ME2 seems to have two large goals in terms of story:

-set up for massive conflicts and story events in ME3

-give Shepard and his immediate allys more of a chance to take on the Reaper threat. A big part of this was getting rid of Normandy 1 and replacing it with SR-2.

Don't worry- this is all just extended set-up, like any middle act in a trilogy.

Its understandable people move on. But you'd expect people who wereyour close friends would have a bit more of a reaction to their dead friend/lover and commander suddenly returning.

Now, other than the ME1 character issues I thought the game was well done and I enjoyed it a lot for what it was.

It was a touching one night stand before a dangerous mission (and just after another one) that would have turned into a true romantic relationship if not for the whole Shepard dying plot device. Given the circumstances, these scenes are very appropriate.

Just you wait- if the ME1 LI's return in ME3 as squaddies I'll be so happy. If not, then there's an issue. I'm completely happy with a turn away from them in ME2 though.

I just hope the LIs from ME2 are there as an option for ME3 as the ones from ME1 are pretty disappointing. Liara is now a cold-blooded killer and the only one who showed any emotion about Shepard's death was Ashley. At this point I would say screw them and just go solo with Cerberus.  I mean the Illusive Man's gone to more trouble than any of the other characters did.

I'd be 100% shocked if that was the case.

Bioware has stated that a lot of characters will make returns in ME3. They've also hinted at prior ME1 characters, namely the first love interests, will have a larger role. They had to be deliberately vague about these characters so as to leave open more interesting character development in ME3.

I know it sounds like a cop out, but this is the reality you get when you're writing for a long series.

I am only 7 hours in and have only met 2 of my former teammates and so far I am happy with it, I really appreciate they gave the fans of ME1 back some of thier old characters to see them again, it really makes you feel like you are still connected.

I mean ME2 has all those new ones and then quite a bit of the old too, its really expanded which is nice.
