In DA 2 and DA O you could easily have two different rogues, one focusing on lockpicking, one focusing on damage, daggers, bows, stealth...kick buttness.

I usually run two rogues in all of three games on Nightmare, they're just a bit squishy for the big fights. High Dragons and things. Honestly, if I was thinking just combat, I'd probably have to go Aveline, DAA Anders and Sera. Aveline's going to need a bigger "DON'T" sign...

I loved rocking Cassandra and Blackwall during the Giant and Dragon fights.

Edit:  I guess if I was going from a tactical perspective I might go with Cassandra, Blackwall, Wynne, alternate Varric...hmm.  Yeah that works since I love being a rogue.

Are you considering ultimate as in generally strongest or most cheese?

For "Ultimate" party for noob players using cheap tactics and exploitive play I'd say:

Blackwall tank
Cole ranged assassin
Sera DW dagger tempest
Inquisitor KE mage

For generally strongest min/max team taking OUT mark of death and thousand cuts cheese play I'd say:

Cassandra (Tank)
Solas (Barrier + Fire + Rift)
Dorian (WInter + Storm + Necromancer)
Inquisitor DW Rogue

Mage - Vivienne
My absolute favourite companion in the entire franchise is a no-brainer. Plus, I'd love to hear her banter with my other choices.
Honourable mention: Morrigan, (if we could have two mages, I'd definitely put them both in for the awesome banter)

Rogue - Isabela
Because I love her and she's my favouritest rogue who I sadly don't play enough with when I romance Seb. And just imagine her banter with Vivienne. Sure to be comedy gold.

Warrior - Alistair
Honestly, Alistair only just beats out Cassandra here. And it's mainly down to the fact that I've already heard the Viv/Cass banters. Plus in my canon, Alistair slept with Isabela at the Pearl so...more comedy gold! And he's King. So the King of Ferelden would be out adventuring with the Divine and a pirate in an admiral's hat. Best party.

I'd have a few groups that i'd switch between

Team Elfiness: Sera, Solas, Merrill and Velanna. Any combo of these peeps mainly because I think the dif in eaches Elfiness would make hilarious banter

Team Good times: Isabela, Zevren, Bull, Oghren, Sera, Dorian and Leliana. These guys just seem like theyd be a blast to be in a party with and the banter would be golden.

Team Serious: Aveline, Cassandra, Blackwall, Viv and Sten. Life of the party with these guys...guest appearance Loghain

Team Dwarven Enchantment!! Varric, Sigrun, Harding, Oghren with Sandal as the ultimate Enchantment!!

Ya i know not the 3 member party limit...but one can dream

Ah, the agony of choice. A lot of good options here:

For warrior, it would be a very close race between Alistair, Oghren and Cassandra.

For rogue, definitely Leliana, with Sigrun, Isabela and Nathaniel as runners-up.

For mage, I'm going with Merrill, though Morrigan, Bethany and Wynne are also awesome as well.

Shale -- Because she's hilarious and sassy. And a badass party member to guard your ass.

Merrill -- Because she's adorable and hilarious. And she's voiced by Eve Myles (Gwen from Torchwood). She's also flawed but can potentially realize how damaging her actions were in the end if you rival her. Plus Isabela is also my ultimate party.

Isabela -- Because she's hilarious and dirty. I love it. And she potentially grows as a person in DA 2 -- plus she always kind of had a heart of gold underneath all that selfishness (I mean, she got into the whole mess for freeing slaves). Her friendship/banter with Merrill is awesome too.

All of these followers also have terrific party banter -- some of the best in DA.

Dual-Wielding Warrior Warden -- Because Hawke and the Inquisitor never really clicked with me. The warden is the only DA protagonist that did really.

My ultimate party would be a group of the following:

(Hero)

-Warriors-

Alistair

Carver

Cassandra

-Mages-

Bethany

Solas

-Rogues-

Varric

Leliana

Isabela

Nathaniel joins for a bonus mission as a guest star party member that I can control (like Tallis). Iron Bull, Velanna, and Sigrun accompany alongside my party and help in a mission, but I don't control them (like Morrigan in the Arbor Wilds, or Cullen at Samson's Temple of Dumat)

My ultimate party is what I call "normal people".  People that love the world they actually lives in and are the least fanantical, less fantasy-oriented characters in the whole series. Down-to-earth people I like to have in my ultimate raw party even in RL.

Blackwall, Vivienne and Varric.

Wait maybe Aveline can sustitute Blackwall..... but well. I wanted to say Sten too.. but he was a very squishy two-handed warrior.

I love these characters. Especially team serious excluding Loghain, and Sandal in dwarven team.

You know i just realized team serious needs a straight guy on the team to poke at them and try and get them to disrupt their cool calm and collected exteriror.  Someone who will make bad joke after bad joke eliciting loads of disgusted noises and grunts of pain and 'nos'.

Unfortunately there are none, unless you mean Alistair which would be a fine and beautiful change in team serious.

For fighting?

Alastair, Vivienne, and Varric

For hanging out

Alastair, Zevran, Dorian (and only because Inquisition Varric isn't as friendly)

Weirdly enough, I thought it was going to be a tough decision.  Do I choose my LIs?  Do I choose the best party?  What about balance?

But then it all resolved itself so easily that it's almost weird.

My canon characters are almost always damage dealing warriors (dual wield in Origins, 2h in DA2 and DAI).  So I need a sword and board, need a rogue, and need a mage.  In step the strongest three, all conveniently my LIs from each game:

Warrior: Cassandra

Survivability, grabbing aggro, just enough Templar love to deal with magic users and have an added dimension to her fighting

Rogue: Isabela

By DA2 endgame, dual wielding Isabela was a walking harvester of souls.  Add to that the best party banter, and this is a no brainer.

Mage:  Morrigan

Tactically... who even needs heal? Storm of the Century, Storm of the Century, Storm of the Century, then step gingerly around the corpses. Throw in some Crushing Prisons and the occasional Cone of Cold combo break with a shield bash, mighty blow or back stab, it's just too much fun.  And her voice is just the icing on the cake.

Don't you need two mages for Storm of the Century?

Not necessarily.  If you're talking because of the mana usage, then just down a couple of lyrium potions and you're good to go (unless you have a lot of mana).  If you're talking about the combination itself, then no, one mage can do it.
