You know its funny I was talking to a friend at work tonight and I remembered, and mentioned, that it was funny that I did not take a single short ranged character to the Vinmark Mountains in Legacy.  I had Anders, Bethany, Varric, and my Bow Rogue Hawke, we did pretty well.  I think Anders was sort of my tank.

Generally three but I always like to have an alternate.

3.) Force Mage and Champion of Kirkwall- Hawke

Pretty sure this isn't an option, but considering how I could control each and every one of these people, they are viable options. Albeit protagonists from previous games and are not inherently party members, this is my ULTIMATE party. These four alone can take over the the world by themselves if they wanted to. Oh how i can dream! 

 

As for a real party team: imagine the things they would do together.

My human-hating Tabris, Darrian (2-hander warrior, Berserker/Reaver/Spirit Warrior)

My 3rd Lavellan, Fen'Elgar (mage, Knight Enchanter)

I headcanon that my Tabris and Lavellan hook up, so I had to have them both.  My Lavellan and Tabris would just destroy anything in their way, leaving Bethany and Cole to pick up the scraps.  Darrian + Fen'Elgar = the most badass couple in Thedas.
