Sorry if my opinion doesn't join yours people, it looks like it belongs in the 90s and should remain there. Too much stuff to read, barely any voice acting and slow sort of gameplay. Not my cup of tea. Like, it's cool if people like it, but to me who never been a PC player, I don't understand the hype and the nostalgia. I don't understand how people enjoy this type of game which is too slow and forces you to read for hours stuff that pop on the screen. If I wanted to read something, I'd open up a book. "Believe it or not, this is the type of game BioWare used to make," someone will tell me. Well, guess what... I'm glad they stopped.

For what it's worth, there is a TON of voice acting. Nearly every NPC that is involved with a quest line is fully voiced.

I noticed the voice acted parts but whenever there are texts like: "He/she frowns," and there's some voice acting followed by it, it ruins the timing a little. I think I'd rather have fully voiced lines, you know? I got some terrible sight and can only see clearly with one eye.

The game got 93/100 on metacritic with 95% positive user reviews on Steam. If it stays at this level in the coming months, then the fans will have decided it is better than DA:I. ;)

That's a bit insulting for people who actually loved DA:I. I rate DA:I as one of my favourite games.

Insulting? How? Why?

Not really insulting personally, more like the idea of it is a bit insulting since this is the feedback board for the Dragon Age game and people are painting it as a bad game with another game that is completely unrelated. Forget I said anything..........?

The PC users at gamespot.com gives Pillars of Eternity 9.6 /10 vs. the 8 /10 they give Inquisition. I might want to give Inquisition 8.5, but it doesn't get a 9 in my book since I find it's too laid back with its RPG mechanics. Inquisition is still a good game, just needs a little tweaking is all ;)

One thing I really dislike so far is the disjointed way they did the voice acting.

The spoken words are voiced - but there's great description you have to catch before he starts speaking the next line.  Voice acting was totally pointless for this game in my opinion.

Character creator is notably pitiful (as in, the appearance of your character) - but that's okay, it's expected with a nostalgia game.

One thing I think is amazing is how detailed it is in describing what everything you're picking in character creation does for you in game.  Kudos to that.

Also - had to snicker when your first quest is a fetch quest.

DLC's and expansions can really do a lot. I'm thinking Mask of the Betrayer for Obsidian's NWN2, Mark of the Assassin for DA2, Citadel DLC for ME3 B)

Modders are also busy at work with Inquisition :)

That's not true. It gives the publishers an excuse to put out a "Game of the Year" Edition, with some token DLC tacked on for a premium price.

The last few GOTY editions I purchased havent had that.

Well, I hope you are right. MotB was incredible but I doubt BioWare is going to release a DLC the size of a full game.

MotA and Citadel were nice but they didn't change the way the story was told or how the game worked.

I doubt modders will be able to change a lot, not without BioWare supplying tools ... and they are not going to do that.

I guess I could understand that... but having the actions acted out would be similarly difficult to see, wouldn't it? A cinematic of someone frowning or text saying someone frowns... those both require being able to visually perceive them clearly? Is the cinematic version easier to pick up over text? I'm asking with genuine curiosity - I'd never considered the accessibility aspect to text based descriptions.

To me, cutscenes allow me to see and hear -- I can't really rely on my sight because my eyes are terrible, so colors and voice really help me sometimes whenever images aren't crispy enough or whenever texts are too small to read. My imagination works better when I get shown things instead of relying too much on the texts. I'm more a movie guy than I am a book guy... So I can understand why people who love reading like this game and why movie guys like me prefer RPGs like Mass Effect or the recent Dragon Ages. I guess there are many types of games for different types of people.

I'm sorry reading is so hard for you.

That's rich, considering you apparently couldn't make it to the end of his paragraph.

In any case, yes, reading on TVs and monitors IS difficult and hard on the eyes compared to reading a book. I don't like reading the codex in BioWare RPGs because reading paragraphs on a 55" screen is awful.

As for the thread, I weep for the day every game made needs to cater to Random cRPG Fan #14. I'm happy that games like Pillars and games like Inquisition can both exist, as variety is the spice of life. If every game was like a BioWare game, I'd have quit gaming long ago. Ditto if every game was an iso RPG.

I fail to see why the Dragon Age franchise should be anything like Pillars Of Eternity. Both are different games, designed differently, so they can cater to those who have different preferences. Newsflash, not every RPG fan is a fan of isometric RPGs..

As for the reading part. I myself hate reading stuff on my PC. I also dislike reading paragraphs of text when playing a game (I play a game for interactivity, not reading). I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one either.

@Lukas Trevelyan: While I totally agree with you about variety... I will say that I like reading over cinematics because I believe it is more versatile and more descriptive than what's been shown in games so far.

Glad to see old and new schools RPG fans giving their  take on a new legend in the making. Perhaps a few of the old Bioware devs are now sitting, pondering about love of craft, the greatness of days gone by and what might perhaps be a more holistic vision for the future...

I might pick it up somewhere down the line. Too many games on my plate (and my future plate) currently and not enough time. Still, it's good to hear positive things about any new RPG nowadays.

I think it is splendid that you found something that you can fully enjoy and appreciate everytime, like for instance "the voice acting". Nothing wrong with that! And credit where credit is due ... BioWare hit the "motherload" with the voice acting.

I mean - apart from the botched up cut scenes ... LIKE, ALL OF 'EM.

*sighs*

BioWare needs to get their ... "stuff" ... together.   (Phrasing "around" the mods here :D )

AND SOON!

Just bring 50% of the difficulty of combat, in depth and engaging side quests with variety of choices into DA:I from PoE, and I'll be the happiest.

Eh. Bioware has hopped from one design template to the next with the DA games. Each one has felt dramatically different than the last (to the detriment of the series, IMO). I'd rather they not make a PoE clone anymore than I wish they'd make a Skyrim clone. The team has really committed a lot of resources into making a cinematic, open world RPG with stylized combat mechanics. I say let them try and make another for their sequel, not something new or groundbreaking... new and groundbreaking just seems to result in breaking.

They should perfect a formula they've created, not re-invent the wheel for the series again (along with all the growing pains that entails). Even if it's not a game I'd want to play, it should be a game that meets their vision of the series. Because as it stands now, there appears to be zero vision for the series.
