Eh. Bioware has hopped from one design template to the next with the DA games. Each one has felt dramatically different than the last (to the detriment of the series, IMO). I'd rather they not make a PoE clone anymore than I wish they'd make a Skyrim clone. The team has really committed a lot of resources into making a cinematic, open world RPG with stylized combat mechanics. I say let them try and make another for their sequel, not something new or groundbreaking... new and groundbreaking just seems to result in breaking.

They should perfect a formula they've created, not re-invent the wheel for the series again (along with all the growing pains that entails). Even if it's not a game I'd want to play, it should be a game that meets their vision of the series. Because as it stands now, there appears to be zero vision for the series.

So far they haven't made an open world game yet. DA:I has large maps, that's all.

Fair. Change that statement to "semi-open world" then.

I love Pillars of Eternity.

But that's because I played RPGs in the 90s.

Dragon Age never tried to be something like this. This is just Baldur's Gate 2 with a twist. It doesn't belong in 2015. I gladly gave them my money though, don't get me wrong, but if Bioware made an isometric RPG with loads of text, portraits instead of just some rendering of the character I just 'created' (in something you can barely call a character creator, just... lol), and super slow combat... I would keep my money.

Again, I love the game. But if you think there's anything else but nostalgia that makes you and me like the game, you're wrong.

No, it's not the number crunching. You can do that in 3D too.

Choosing all the background cultural things is hella sweet though.

And for those who wanna know: I'm playing a Moon Godlike Chanter

Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the world. It's embraced by kids in primary school to elderly adults.

It had no dialogue, no cinematics, literal BLOCKS for graphics and gameplay which involves research and experimentation by the player instead of hand holding or streamlining.

Good games are good games. The concept that no one who wasn't an RPG PC gamer in the 90's could pick up this game and actually like it is like saying everyone who had Skyrim as their first RPG would pick up DA:I and love it. A good experience is a good experience, regardless of what games you've been previously exposed to.

I seriously doubt a significant portion of people born after 2000 is going to like this.

Sure, there will be some. But if you've been spoiled with cinematics and nearly 100% spoken text, you're going to have a serious tough time with this game.

And lets not forget that even back then these type of games weren't mega sellers. PoE might be, but that's because everyone who liked BG2 is going to buy it :P

For anyone hopiing to see something different from BioWare for future RPGs, what we're seeing right now is it.  The latest DLC confirms they have no intention of steering from their current course.  The sales figures of DA:I and Skyrim selling 20+ million copies has them on track to reach out to the widest audience possible.  Fast paced, arcade like aciton, minimum thinking, mechanics chiseled into a narrow path where one cannot go wrong,

So, a majority of the world's fifteen year olds (and younger) won't like a game with story themes that involve stillborn deaths, genocidal killing by tyrants and rampant racism? Darn. Obsidian should just hang up their shingles then.

This game wasn't made to be played by kids after Saturday morning cartoons. The fact that so many developers are aiming their development to this group is part of the reason for a lack of complexity when developing game systems.

Puh lease. You didn't like those kinds of a stories or movies as 12 year old? Or played story heavy games in general as a 12 year old?

Your mom didn't like it, but your mom didn't like Carmageddon either :P

But either way, this remains a niche game. Even in the 90s these were not mainstream games and I seriously doubt it's going to win over many new players.

And thinking Bioware, a major AAA company should aspire to make a game like this (which is main sentiment of this topic) is just ludicrous. As a fun side project maybe, as a reward for making a record breaking game ;)

Well if I wasn't so unsatisfied with the replayability of DAI I probably wouldn't be looking for a game like Pillars of Eternity.

I've been trying to figure out why I didn't like DAI. I'm still not sure but I think it has to do with this particular game and the anchor thing so I'm thinking DA4 will be better and have greater variety of enemies and such.

I wasn't that interested in Pillars of Eternity because I figured it might have puzzles and I'm awful at puzzles. Also don't like the low res characters in the Infinity engine games. Actually the characters look better than I expected in Pillars of Eternity.

Myself I like D&D computer games but haven't played the Baldur's gate games or Icewind dale. I do plan to play these games now which tells you the kind of games I'm liking at the moment. So Pillars should be exactly what I want to play.

At least they let you build your character and let you manually place attribute points and plan out different characters. I've had 10 dollars worth of fun just thinking about my first character and I won't be buying Pillars until the 6th of April.

I don't disagree it is a niche product. But it's completely different than saying the only reason anyone could ever hope to enjoy it is nostalgia.

And nowhere did I say Bioware should emulate them. In fact, I stated the exact opposite a mere few posts back.

For what it's worth, there is a TON of voice acting. Nearly every NPC that is involved with a quest line is fully voiced.

And it's incredibly frustrating. The text is writing with cues e.g. "He turns his head to face you, scratching nervously at his stubble: 'What .... what do you mean I didn't leave it behind?'"

The VO reads the line out in a way that's completely at odds with the stage direction.

I'm generally a fan of VO but I think voicing the lines actually detracted from POE.

While I'm absolutely loving PoE, especially the ranger with animal companion, I think this thread should be in a different forum. I feel its quite disrespectful towards DA:I developers to bring up PoE as a "modal RPG" in a feedback forum for THEIR game.

Huh. Maybe I haven't been exposed to enough, but I havent felt this way yet during the dialogue. I've always really enjoyed the... somatic, maybe?... aspect to text dialogue.

I agree, should be moved to The Lobby or something.

What a person could want more than a game that dumb people won't play? That's part of the perfection of the game. No risk of running into dumbs.
The light of perfection purge the worthless only the worthy can touch it.

PoE is still too mainstream, but it balances well with quality. It brights like the blade of a paladin slaying the demon of dumbness.

I'm in on the PoE KS, but self congratulation was not one of the reasons I bought it. Anyway since its a SP game you're not likely to run into anyone, dumb or otherwise.

I think the feedback forum is a good place for this. We are providing feedback to show them we don't appreciate the consolazation and dumbing down of the series. The series has gotten simpler and simpler with each release. I'm pretty sure DA4 will be playable on the original NES 2 button controller lol.

That being said PoE is awesome. While Iiked the graphics in DAI I just never felt it was a true RPGs. It felt more like an action game. Heck even Diablo has better loot and inventory management. To be honest I can't find 1 thing DAI does well outside of looking decent.

1 - *grabs the tip of his nose and sighs*
2 - Though I gotta agree with the loot system, it's abysmal and needs an overhaul, then a makeover. The RNG system really breaks the game for me and a lot of people who used the Item Dupe glitch because we were tired of farming for our loots, saving and reloading our files at some spots.

It is. It's just a thread disguised to bash BioWare and for the old fashioned fans to gather and feel like the nostalgia is the only way they'll be satisfied with their gaming life. However, we also seen a few fans of the new style BioWare is using for the series while also appreciating PoE.

I'm a few hours in and already made several choices, one I think will bite me in the ass later. Met some interesting companions, and got a shythole Keep to fix up. lol!! I admit that I'm not a fan of the isometric camera but I'm getting used to it. The voice acting is really good.  I just wish my character spoke.

I'm also not sure how I feel about the whole "PC is special." story that seems to be developing. But I'm not that far in to judge the story completely.

If Pillars had DAI graphics and DAO controls and camera, along with a voiced PC I would....
