Games you bought, but never finished...

Basically the title speaks for itself.

What games have you bought over the years that, for whatever reason, you were unable, or unwilling to finish? Which ones are still hanging over your head, unbeaten, or unbeatable?

Maybe it was due to you becoming hopelessly stuck on 'that one mission', losing interest, or possibly the game just plain sucked?

Do you ever experience a weird feeling of 'guilt' over not completing a game, and vow to yourself that you'll give it another shot at some point... but never do?

Here's my list:

Far Cry 1:

Loved the first half of the game, but it began to feel like a real grind toward the latter section, with those endless, brutal Trigen fights. Ultimately I ended up not really enjoying it so much, it just felt like a real slog.

Starcraft 2 - Wings of LIberty:

I was so looking forward to this title, after being such a fan of the original Starcraft. Sadly I have a near-pathological hatred of timed missions, race against the clock mechanics, or anything of that nature. Every single damned single player mission in that sodding game seemed to be either timed, a race against the clock event, or featured some other mechanic that forced you to rush, else you'd fail. Totally lost all interest after around ten missions and uninstalled, never to be played again.

Tomb Raider 1:

Going back to the 90s here. I got totally stuck on some damned quest to find some cog, spent hour after hour trying to find it, wandering around forever. Just gave up in the end.

The Elder Scrolls Morrowind:

Sadly I bought this one late... a few weeks before Skyrim was released. Didn't have the patience to complete the dated Morrowind first before moving on to the new, shiny, awesome Skyrim.

Despite this I still mean to give this one another go at some point.

Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun:

Finished it on GDI, then became stuck on 'that one mission' a ghastly NOD mission, featuring a handful of crap, squishy , weakunits, that you have to somehow rush past a wall of brutal heavy tanks and elite units in order to beat them to a railway station and destroy it. Never managed to get past it despite a zillion attempts.

Doom 3:

I did technically finish it, but only by cheating on the final Cyberdemon boss, which doesn't really count.

Shadow Warrior:

Not sure why I never completed it. I think I just got into that 'need to take a break' mindset and never got back to it.

Starcraft Brood War:

Expansion to original game. Another case of 'that one mission', in this case a horrid Zerg mission on a timer. Got to frustrated to continue,

Deus Ex (original):

Crashed constantly, again and again on the old PC I had back then, no idea why. Gave up in disgust.

Darksiders 2. I didn't finish the game because I was busy with other games I was playing at the time.

TES - Oblivion. Crashed a ton of times, when it happened my saves were randomly corrupted (all of them). Worst videogaming experience in my entire life.

NWN 2 - RAGE GAME EDITION ---> When my party arrived at Neverwinter, after the cutscene at the inn I could not exit. Everything was useless: updates, patches, etc.

I tend to game hop a bit tbh. Thus I've never really left a game unfinished. I might stop playing a game for a bit, start on another one and then go back to the former finish it up later.

That usually seems to be my pattern. I'm a bit of a completionist when it comes to my gaming, but there are a few games I can remember not wanting to go back and finish because reasons.

Dead Island (couldn't get into it, maybe I'll give it another shot in the future) and Lord of the Rings: War in the North (kept glitching and not responding so I got annoyed and uninstalled it).

Those are the only ones I can think of.

I have quite a few of those but I tend to also not having them be left unfinished, whenever I get home I'll try to figure out which games I want to finish. Right now, I'm contemplating on a few, anyway.

Stopped playing due to motion sickness and feel no guilt about putting down:

Skyrim

Overlord (desperate for a mini map to get through that one)

Stopped playing because I created another Warden or Inquisitor instead (guilty procrastinator feels aplenty):

Magicka

Skyborn

Mass Effect 2

FarCry 3, AC1, Bioshock Infinite, Red Dead Redemption. Oh, and DA2.

One of these days I'll get around to finishing them up.

I'm about the same. I'll always end up going back to finish games, even if that takes a ridiculous amount of time. Like a year.  :P

All bar one exception I can think of, which is FF13. I've no motivation to ever try and finish that.

Oh boy, this goes back decades for me, but I'll give it a shot.

Alternate Reality (C64) - couldn't figure out the story or what I was supposed to be doing

Infocom games like Zork, Suspended, etc. (C64) - text adventures in the birth of the graphics age; I gravitated toward graphics

Ultima VI (PC) - imagine playing the whole Skyrim map compressed within the space of one of it's holds; and that's how I felt playing this after Ultima IV and V. In the transition from 2D to isometric 3D the map was adapted to town scale rather than world scale effectively shrinking the world. Also languages didn't interest me much so when I got to the Gargish parts of the game I gave up out of lack of interest.

Ultima VII (PC) - Similar issue as with Ultima VI, mapwise. Got further into the game but ultimately lost interest.

*fast forward several years*

Alpha Protocol (PC) - shooting felt sloppy (I can hit what I aim at with pistol with only basic training) and the timed dialog selecting a response before I could finish reading the sentence, much less my responses, capped it off. Thankfully only paid $0.02 for it on a Steam sale.

Borderlands (PC) - very difficult to play solo due to mmo monster respawns and difficulty tuned to multiplayer; did some multiplayer but didn't enjoy it much. Ultimately uninstalled.

Fable III (PC) - got it before Steam discontinued, played some multiplayer; have yet to finish singleplayer campaign.

That's about it. Have several games I've yet to play but it's just a matter of making time to try them out.

Including Steam and GOG.com Sale buys? A LOT!!! More than I am willing to type here. There may even be a few I haven't even started yet.

Boxed copies? I think I finished them all? No, I think there are a few exceptions:

- Venetica: Started it, then had something else coming up in RL, had to take a break from gaming for a while and never got back to it. Still want to continue it at some point though.

- Might & Magic VI: I played this one for hours and hours but i never finished it. A friend told me that later it

Spoiler

That actually sounds pretty cool to me but it's too dated to go back in earnest now.

Oh, also, I'll probably get killed for writing this here but I have to be honest: Baldur's Gate. Problem was, I had the German version and the voices are just horrible and kill any atmosphere. Also, I am not familiar with the D&D universe at all and didn't really get invested in the game world. So I think I made it to Amn and then stopped.

Divinity: Original Sin. I actually kind of like this game, but for some odd reason I just stop bothering after I reached level 18.

My Backloggery's unfinished games count currently stands at 168, 62 of which are unplayed. I'm fairly sure there are more.

I lose interest easily.

I've noticed a lot of Witcher's/Witcher 2's.

Yeah I've noticed a few Witcher mentions, which is quite surprising.

As for Skyrim, I'm not sure if you can ever truly 'finish' it in the conventional sense. I've played through three different characters up to around level 50, and have always left out an absolute truckload of quests, this doesn't even include the 'always available' radiant quests from the various factions. I've never even done the civil war  on any character as of yet.

Problem with Skyrim's content system is you tend to get quests shoved in your face, whether you want them or not. Often there's no way of refusing... so when you read that innocent-looking book, and a loud voice starts ranting "I am the Daedric Prince of Stabbing Kittens in the Face! Go now my champion and stab one hundred kittens in the face, and then burn down the orphanage, I will await your return!" The quest will always sit there in your inventory, impossible to refuse, or remove, regardless of whether or not you wish to do it.

Luckily there' a nice mod out there called 'The Choice is Yours', that I can't recommend highly enough.

Limbo: I honestly got bored of the puzzles

Last of Us: I've owned it for a year now and can't be bothered to play it over other games, I haven't even put it in my PS3. I will eventually though.

Bioshock 1/Infinite: similar to Last of Us, but I'm a tad more interested in them.

Borderlands 2 on the Vita: controls
