Why I'm loving Jaws of Hakkon

1. It operates as an expansion pack in several small ways. You have new crafting materials, new schematics, and even a pretty nifty new Inquisitor ability that can be upgraded and deployed in some fun ways.
2. It elaborates on the previous Inquisitor. Though this story started off feeling like a sidequest, it quickly took centerstage for me. Through codexes (if you're the codex type) and conversations with spirits and one surprisingly funny Orlesian professor, the story of the first Inquisitor unfolds in a rather elegant way. I haven't finished this yet, but I'm really enjoying it.
3. It's tough. After I beat the main story, my Level 24 2-handed warrior Templar was doomed to roam Thedas without much of a challenge. Sure, there was the occasional dragon, but once I beat the story and my character got above Level 20 or so, much of the challenge fell away. Which is understandable, since I played through a ton of perfectly challenging areas to get to that point. But upon strolling into the Frostback Basin and blithely running up to the first Fade Rift I saw, I was quickly trounced by a pissed off Fear Demon and a cadre of Despair Demons, all level 24. I immediately respec'd 2 characters, regrouped with some weapon mods at Skyhold, and hit the Basin floor again with a righteous fury I hadn't felt since my first encounter with the Red Templars in Emprise Du Leon. The game had teeth again!
4. The Avaar are pretty cool. I've been waiting for more Avaar content since Dragon Age: Origins: Awakening. Dragon Age has always been pretty good at occasionally subverting fantasy tropes. The Avaar could have easily fell into the "Noble Savage" category or the "Mindless Barbarian" cliché, but instead they're quite a nuanced people. The Inquisitor finds himself in the middle of a rather complicated political struggle between Avaar holds, and while I can't say the aforementioned tropes aren't present, they also aren't relied upon. There's plenty going on in Stone Bear Hold, as much as you'll find in Val Royeaux.
5. It marks the game truly coming into its own. What's that, you say? Why should we have paid $80, gone through 6 patches, and paid more for DLC for the game to really actualize its potential? Well, I don't know. Maybe Bioware could have included its armor tinting, party storage, and gameplay corrections into the original game. But hey, the damn thing was in development for a long time and I'm glad we got it sooner than later.
That being said, with all of the little tweaks and upgrades that have occurred over the course of the patches, exploring the Frostback Basin with my custom-tinted armor and all of my favorite weapons and custom armor stored safely in Skyhold gave me a kind of new perspective on the game. I was no longer burdened by the massive inventory I found myself carrying, and I felt a certain pride in approaching a brand new people with my crew all wearing our fashionable garnet and gold armor sets (Go Noles!). The DLC provided a new adventure that allowed me to incorporate all of my successes and customizations thus far, yet with a new sense of challenge and liberty.
Bioware could put out a dozen of these things and, with the game in its current state, I'd continue to buy them and play the **** out of them. It's just that much fun for me.
Other consoles users, I feel your pain. But rest assured, the wait will be worth it. Tinker with your Inquisitor and favorite characters, get them ready for the challenges to come. It will be worth it.
But the best part is, the adventures of the Inquisitor - your Inquisitor - continue.

So far, I'm really enjoying Bioware's Jaws of Hakkon DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition. I know, it's unfair to only release it on Xbox One and PC. Your objection is noted, I'm still going to play the hell out of it. Despite many of the rants I've seen on the interwebs, I think this DLC is more than just another Hinterlands filled with shards (though there are those) and elfroot (and that too). For brevity's sake, I've distilled my general good vibes into a list:
Great post!!! Nice to see some positivity for a change. I enjoyed immensely.
I also was grateful one of my characters had a decent amount of cold resistance. ![]()

I'm happy with new game content period.
Happy to hear someone not whining about this. I hope they continue to pump out DLC. They can take my money.

I have to admit that I fail to understand the complaints about JoH? I love the dlc and am looking forward to running through again. Since the OP hasn't finished yet, all that I will add is that there is more satisfaction from this ending than there was from the final fight against Corypheus - at least for me.
Oh, and the reward armor is awesome!!

Is this the thread where negativity is frowned upon? Because I did enjoy the DLC too and thought it was very well worth its price (but for that you need to do more than the main quest).

I haven't finished it yet and i'm still doing those fetch quests (who are also far better than in vanilla game), and i gotta say i enjoy it so far.
Edit: the price was indeed too much though.

The most bizarre part of all that was somehow Elhanan getting called out by name. Whatever she did to ****** him off, I now respect her a lot more.

wow katokires what you said was very productive and not Thread derailing at all,
that being said I'm just patiently waiting for this DLC to be available for other platforms and this thread convinced me to get it when it finally is available. *sigh* ![]()

Still waiting for this, youd think an exclusivity deal would include the 360. Guess not.

Okay...well. Anyway, OP, I just finished it yesterday, and I really liked the dlc! The first half of the dlc is pretty much on pace with the vanilla game, as in you have to do a few things first. And the second half is a ton of fun.
I really loved the setting. It's beautiful! I love the tree canopy; the mists and ocean views; the swamp area. I liked how the inquisition soldiers seem to be out and about. They're all over the place compared to the vanilla game. The camps themselves seem larger---love the treehouse thing--the camps have more people and a feeling of activity. Soldiers hanging out, or fixing their equipment. I like the big fires in front of the rest tents. Feels cozier. Terrain navigation seemed easier.
Or after a battle, or just walking around, I see many more Inquisition soldiers. At first, I tried to attack them when I saw them in the distance. lol! I thought they were enemies. I liked seeing them.
Love the Avaars and their village. The Augur. Oh, just really enjoyed learning more about their culture. That one merchant freaked me out, though. The one with all the eyeballs in his dwelling.
The night time version of everything was awesome, wow. Beautiful--fires lit in the stone monuments dotting the mountainside. Gives a completely different feel to an area. The fight club arena. And becoming "kin".
And yes, OP, it definitely had some teeth---in more ways than one...But it was a fun challenge with some tough fights.
Bear. And the Inquisitor's story from 800 years ago. I wasn't sure I would care abt the older Quizzy and all, but I did. Quickly. And it left me with some reservations about the motivations of a few characters in the old Quizzy's story.
I really enjoyed it, it seemed tighter. It felt like everything I found or discussed was pushing me towards the main point of the story. The bottleneck of the story.
And there was one fight towards the end..whew..good lord I died many times before triumph...and it felt well earned.
