Hey guys!

I'm currently lvl 10 rogue and my other party members are level 9, I checked out some stores in Hinderlands and val royeaux but all of the weapons and armor there are weaker than the ones I got from killing enemies. Where exactly can I buy better weapons and armor? Also I have a few other questions, firstly what are runes and how do you get them? I saw that they improve your weapons and I have a few but I don't know where I got them. Second, how can I improve my armor and weapons? When I visit blacksmith it just says there are no upgrades for my items. And can Varic get a better bow? I have a few good ones but they all say not for varic...  Also I only have around 2500 gold, can I even buy anything good with this much?

I'd really appreciate if someone could answer my questions since I'm new to the game.

The real treasures in this game are the schematics and the crafting materials.  In your inventory there is a section for schematics and a section for crafting materials.  Tier 3 schematics > Tier 2 schematics > Tier 1 schematics and the same is true for crafting materials.  Visit the blacksmith and you can find both a weapon crafting table and an armor crafting table.  You can craft both weapons and weapon upgrades at the weapons table.  You can craft armor and armor upgrades at the armor table.  Shields are considered weapons.  Runes can only be crafted after you reach Skyhold and after you recruit an Arcanist.  Runes are the least important upgrade for anything and can safely be ignored if you wish.

Each Armor Schematic has one slot that is used for the Armor stat and it may have other defensive slots or utility slots.  Each slot uses either cloth, metal or leather.  You can use any tier material in any tier schematic.  In general I prefer to maximize my utility slots in armor gearing myself and companion.  Utility cloth will have either Willpower, Magic or a combination of the two stats, Utility Leather will have cunning, dexterity or a combination of the two stats and utility metal will have either strength, constitution or a combination of the two stats.  Willpower, Cunning and Constitution are good for all classes.   Dexterity, Magic and Strength are best for Rogues, Mages or Warriors respectively.

Weapon schematics are the same, they can have offensive or utility slots and any of the three broad types of materials.  In weapons I prefer to maximize offensive slots over utility slots.  I also happen to value crit chance a lot and so like offensive leather the most.

After you build your Armor or Weapons, check them out in the inventory screen.  You will see that Staves for instance normally accept Staff Blade and Staff Grip upgrades.  Longbows normally accept Longbow Grips.  1 handed weapons are tricky should always be double checked and the same with 2 handed weapons.  Armor may either have no upgrade slots or will accept legs and arm upgrades of a given type (light, medium, heavy).  You can mix and match tiers within the upgrade and items.  In general upgradable weapons and armor end up more powerful than ones that don't accept upgrades.

For instance you can buy the Orlesian Army Battlemage Armor at the Val Royeaux schematic shop (off to the east on the main level, up some stairs).  But it is very expensive, it is only usable for humans and is inferior to the Enchanter Coat when coupled with enchanter mail legs and Enchanter coat arms.  All three of the Enchanter Coat, Enchanter Coat Arms and Enchanter Mail Legs are purchasable at Val Royeaux and the total of all three schematics is less than the Orlesian Army BattleMage Armor Schematic.

I hope this helps.
