Dispel is almost mandatory for them on my NM playthroughs.
Yes! As an experiment, I set Solas to prefer Dispel as well as Barrier and he did a pretty good job as firefighter against the Fereldan Frostback on NM, Level 10. But Tempered Glass Flasks + Tonics are more effective in general.

Huh.. not seeing the downside there.
As for Dispel, I like having it especially for dealing with rifts. I also prefer to pay for it as opposed to mind blast to get to the revive spell that comes in handy to have now and again.
