Just can't get into DA:I

I loved Dragon Age Origins, DA:2 less so (but still highly enjoyable) but I'm really struggling to get into Inquisition. In Origins I disabled AI and used the brilliant tactical cam mode to work out complex tactics and played the game in turn based mode.

Tactical cam mode in Inquisition seems worthless; I can only execute a single action, no way points or complex chains of moves; it might as well not be there but I'm struggling to enjoy the game as an arcade experience either.

I am trying to persevere but I'm really not finding combat enjoyable at all.

Any tips on how I should play?

Go play something else? If it's not your game, it's not your game.

I think this might be the best choice.  I don't really know any tips to make combat more enjoyable if you can't get into it, especially since you said you already tried tac cam and everything else.  Have you tried playing as different companions to see if it's maybe just the type you're not liking?  Maybe you'll like mage, or rogue, or archer, or 2her, or sword and board better then what you're currently using.

Try not to focus on things you think it doesn't do as good as the other games and try to enjoy it for what it does do.

I play without using the tactical camera... hack n slash. I pretty much play all games that way, so no biggie.
Enjoy the story, the characters, the scenery.

On normal, just play it like a madman with no tactics and try to get through as quick as possible.

The name of the OP is kinda ironic for someone who doesn't like DA:I.

Play on easy, since the combat is far more annoying than fun.
Play as a ranged class as melee is more trouble than it's worth.
Set AI to follow/defend self.
Set reserve stamina to ~20% or your companions will barely use any abilities.
Give your mages and tank abilities and gear that boost barrier/guard and roflstomp your way through the game.
If you aren't going to micromanage, don't bother giving your companions abilities that are positioning dependent; the AI is too dumb to use them.
Play Bloodborne or Pillars of Eternity instead.

If tactical cam is that bad for you, I'd probably advise just playing it like DA2 in the normal cam mode.

For me I haven't been as excited about starting new playthroughs as I was for other BioWare games, mostly because Inquisition feels really grindy at times and it was okay for the first run but I'm not looking forward to it if I do another run.

I shall persevere; I loved DA:O but depended heavily on Tactical View which just feels absurdly dumbed down in DA:I.

Just put the game on casual and breeze through it. Only do as many side quests as necessary to get as much power as you need to progress the game. Really, the story is only about 20-25 hours long. If you play on casual, it'll take no time at all.

Its a well known cognitive phenomenon that people tend to focus on negative things more often than positive things. It's a deeply rooted evolutionary survival trait that is hard to unlearn.

I think that what I'm struggling with is how dumbed down the Tactical Camera mode and AI rules are in DA:O and DA:I. It's not the game I was hoping for or expecting but I suspect over time I'll learn to play a different was and have fun.

That play-style is easily achievable on the hardest difficulty.  I'm no pro gamer, far from it in fact, yet I didn't use any tactics other than to manually move the dumb ass AI ranged characters out of harms way every now and then.

It can be done.

If there are multiple ways you could view something, it makes sense to view it in the way that produces the best outcomes for you.

I never use tac cam for combat. I just control my Inquisitor in 3rd party view.

This is my biggest gripe with DA: 2 and Inquisition: BioWare seemed to not understand what made Origins so popular. What made Origins so popular was that it was an updated version of classic crpg gameplay. If you played a Dungeons & Dragons game or Fallout you knew that combat style. It was a lot more tactical. For whatever reason BioWare thinks that people want Mass Effect with Dragons; and a little "tactics". But let's be honest, the people who bought Origins bought it because we wanted Baldur's Gate. That being said I accept Inquisition for what it is: a hybrid of Mass Effect and Origins (sort of....well at least it tries to be) and have given up hope that BioWare will give me what I want. Well at least other companies are catering to my old school itch. Pillars of Eternity looks pretty cool.

Normally; one would think that trying to be the jack of all trades usually ends up master of none. But :

On a fundemental basis; they had something so close to combining action and tactical combat in such a perfect way that it hurts to see the direction of DA:I. To my belief; this was the strongest aspect of the franchise and a major selling feature on par with the story and progression. They could have perfected that system this time around. I really believed and expected that...

Instead; they switched into a more action style which by the way i find not much of an improvement over the action elements of previous games. As a result; a very promising and an important feature seems to be ruined for a little gain on one of its sub elements...

I'm leaning very heavily towards PoE; it's a shame I suddenly remembered that Origins offered a refund, 2 days after it had expired!

Speak for yourself, I loved Origins for the story and characters and I've never played Baldur's Gate. :?

Well it's just not doing it for me I'm afraid; this game feels just feels so far away from Dragon Age Origins it's unreal (Tactical View and the AI seem just vestiges of what they were in Origins).

I'm sure that the characters and storyline as just as good as they were in Origins but I'm finding the game play just too dull; time to move on I think.

*snip*

I didn't even play RPGs before DAO. What drew me into the genre was the story, characters, and interactions in that game.

To the OP: I felt that way at first but DA:I grew on me. Granted this was the first DA game I've played. I spent the first hour of DA:I running around going man this game sucks. It didn't take long for me to change my mind though. I find the story engaging and started to identify with some of the characters. I actully like the combat (I play on nightmare only) the tactical camera is a little annoying but this game does have the option for full turn based combat and it does work fine at least for me but I rarely use it. Some of the combat skills are fun to use like bull charge "knocking people over like bowling pins" or fire spells "watching them run around in terror".

I like the ability to take control of my party members in the middle of a fight. I can see the battle from different roles and help them out if there strugglng. I recommend setting the behaviors of your party. Its really important not have your party members gobble up all you potions. I set up so I manually use all potions. If things start going bad in combat thats when I switch to turn base regroup and use potions/revive/barrier. I find 2 hand warriors very fun to play (me smash things). I use Varric plus a mage and a tank. The one skill that generates guard without is threat is a life saver for 2 hand warriors.

I don't mind the fetch quest that much other then the fact that it doesn't make sense for me (as the leader) to be running errands when I have an army of soldiers and agents who seem better suited fo that kind of work. Its like I'm playing the role of a king but live the life of a peasent. My biggest gripes would be the bugs. This game was probably released a little too early and not fully tested on all 5 platforms. Anyway I recommend trying to find whatever parts of the game you can enjoy and if there's none then its probably not worth playing.

I had played RPGs but got drawn into DA:O for the same reasons. I hadn't actually played a BG game yet.

Amusingly enough for all the complaints of Inquisition being "MMOish" Origins was originally described to me as being "like WoW but you control the entire party and with a Mass Effect quality story".
