I love Obsidian, but PoE has been a frustrating experience for me. I'm bored and forcing myself to play the game. Also, scared shitless of getting the ranger bug, I'd it in the beta and the problem isn't fixed from what I've heard.

I am curious to ask you why is so frustrating to you? I know is not my bisness but you seem to have an opinion and i am really curious to listen it

I think it's better to simply appreciate what both companies produce rather than compare them competitively.

This, so much. There is more than enough space on the market for Obsidian's old-timey, mechanics and atmosphere driven RPG, and for Bioware's story and character driven ventures. I wouldn't want to choose one over the other, and thankfully I don't have to.

yea that whole declaration are just so.....

Well i have no gentle words to define them...But overall..Reflect the nature of rpg bioware is working for...

I tend to make a distinct definition of RPG...

Example

Dragon age Origins

Baldur's gate 1-2

Icewind 1-2

Pillars of Eternity

Divinity Original Sin

Are on the category of RPG for me..

While:

Dragon age 2

Dragon age Inquisition

The elder scrolls: Skyrim

Are Lite RPG..

What bioware is doing is make rpg for people not used to play rpg.. Have a more large audience...

No more no less

Bolded for irony?

Anyway, I'm not far enough in PoE to judge characters and interaction, but I am remembering how much I've missed interesting character customization. So many delicious options and stats/abilities to play with, versus... well, just choosing abilities. Dual-wielding Death Godlike Elven Cipher for the win!

I expect that the characters will be well written, but I also suspect companion interaction won't feel as deep as BioWare games. Guees we'll see. This is a great time period for RPG gaming for me. DA:I, PoE, and Witcher 3, all in a row and perfectly spaced. And each a different type of RPG. Excellent.

^I never said that is overall better then Obsidian they are just better at making better in game universes and of course characters, be they companions or npc or even antagonists(current game DAI is not a good example of that but the rest are for antagonists) .

Look I really like Bioware games.  I go all the way back to BG1.  So obviously, there must be something about this company that makes me want to spend money.  And further, I haven't played Pillars yet -- but as a big fan of BG2, I intend to -- so maybe I am not the best judge of the game.

But I'd have to say that this is a silly comment.  You are going to compare PoE to the third Dragon Age game in terms of world-building?  Shouldn't you wait until the third PoE game to do this?  I seem to remember a lot of pretty heavy Alistair, Duncan and Morrigan info-dumps in DAO.  Not to mention Leliana sitting in camp just telling you story after story after story.

Further, you are going to compare depth between a game that was a Kickstarter and a game that was backed by one of the biggest video game corporations in the world?

This is false equivalency.

Well don't expect romance options or stuff like that in POE... Character are well written overall not only companion but also many npc you meet around.. Companion reacts a lot at what you happen around you.. You can learn their past..Speaking with them.. They also speaking with other Companion sometimes...Personally i like them... I felt them more realistic and more focused on what happen around them...

Personally, my dream game would be if BioWare made a game in the same vein as Pillars of Eternity / Baldur's Gate 2 but just set it in the Dragon Age universe.

Same here but that won't happen sadly..And for many reasons... They chose their path calling it Evolution...But more than evolution is a radical change from their past game formula we are lucky others decided to go in a total different direction..

Pillars of eternity is an example

or Wastedland 2

Or even Divinity original sin

What PoE lacks in the romance department it makes up for with some excellent world-building. Still gotta wonder what could have been, though. That mage elf, Baeloth Aloth, voiced by Matthew Mercer? Not bad. Durance is my fave so far, though.

Durance Romance FTW!

Been playing Pillars of Eternity and enjoying it a lot. The combat and controls are good, something that that in DAI annoys me to this day. Haven't gone very far in so cannot comment on story or characters, but the VA at least seems decent. Of course after so many BW games, lack of interactions that are 'up close' seems a little lacking.

That said DAI and PoE are very different beasts. Comparing them is stupid. Bioware's RPGs have clearly 'evolved' into what they are today and those of us who need their old time fix will need to look elsewhere and that is where Obsidian and PoE come in. Which is why I hope these guys do really well. BW can continue making whatever the hell kind of games they like, I only come for the story now anyway, not for the game.

I hope DA doesn't go down the same path as PoE in the form of game mechanics. To me, PoE looks really boring and it would be a total bummer if DA became a boring game. I do like Inquisition, because of my love for the DA world/lore. Let's keep the old time stuff away from the new stuff.

Hilarious.

Obsidian's character writing have always been leagues above what Bioware have been doing in the last 10 years or so, but hardly a surprise considering they got Chris Avellone and co from the old black isle/interplay working there now.

First of all the amount of money invested in a video game does not mean that it will be better its proven time and time again. Or you disagree with me here?

Spoiler
But with all this they seem so shallow while in DA you have people that are interesting that makes you remember them after I do not remember any of the names of any of my companions from PoE it also helps that each one of them had interesting quests that did not required only talking to the companion.

Now the PoE universe is just boring with nothing very interesting while DA universe has the fade, the Chantry and the best of all the darkspawn.

Dude, lay off the Pillars of Eternity spoilers! I'm pretty sure that Scuttlebut (Spoilers) doesn't meant you're allowed to spoil other games.

... how on earth did we end up here, of all places? Surely the general off-topic forum would have been more appropriate?

Oh, well. At least it's not in the Dragon Age forums proper any more.

Makes sense.

Obsidian made NWN2 as well as PoE (and with some of the same designers).

Frankly i like much more the companions in POE they seem more logical they don't open soon to tell you the history of their life... with the time they do...  Bioware characters after origins always make me feel like if their banter somehow in certain situation was forced to be there... I have no complain for not romances in POE no complain at all..After all i am playing an RPG not a fantasy romance simulator
